DAY IN THE LIFE WORKING AS A SOUND ENGINEER / Part 1
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 чер 2024
- I got a couple of shifts working in-house sound for a local venue I used to work at before I became a full time touring engineer. I've not really done much venue work for around 6 years now but I did use to work at this venue pretty much full time for around 3 years. I got asked if I could cover a few empty engineer slots at the venue & since I was at home & haven't got any touring work at the moment I agreed. I thought id show you what equipment & bits I packed into my bag for the shifts as well as show some BTS of the set-up & tasks involved with working for a venue as their sound engineer.

2 years late with 'mixbus'! 😊 Love the videos man, as someone just getting into the world of sound engineering, they're absolutely inspirational. Thank you!
nice to see an old school setup with real snake cable in this era of digital mixers and cat5 etc,
It's what our band run at the moment but the lads want to move to a Soundcraft UI24R to make packing up and down for gigs lighter and faster.
@@Dicoboomtime the new technology definitely has made things much lighter and more efficient
Starting a music technology/engineering uni course with placement year in september, these vids are a huge inspiration for me, keep it up! 😆❤️
Amazing! Thanks for the kind words!
I cant believe I've only just found your channel!...Malevolence!! While She Sleeps!!!...and now corp!?!
It's a Sheffielders wet dream haha.
Carry on like this mate, loving your videos and I'll watch every one of em'
I’m gonna start doing sound for venues soon so this video was really used up to come better prepared! Got yourself a new sub

Haha yes! So much easier to spot them if they are not just black like 98% of other i see around
mixbus! great work!
Appreciate it!
Great content mixbus
Appreciate it, thank you for checking the video out!
Nice mixer.
love a good mix bus
🙏🙏🙏
Super Cool stuff in here man! Thanks for making those videos! A question: How did you "save" the 3 sound cheks on this analog console? You had lots of channels to spare and used diferent channels for all of the bands? or used the same channels and took a picture of the settings? Thanks!
Ahhhh I wish they had a digital desk at this venue!
So usually if the bands have a similar lineup I use aux 1-8 for one band, then I move the xlr outputs down to aux 9-16 for the next band. Try to keep same gain / eq and just give the opens a mix with levels from that. If I do need to change anything I take pictures to recall back after.
Or I move the channels I need further up the board into ones not being used.
@@RattlinBonesClub Nice! Thanks for the answer! Yeah, the old analog way to do things, I love analog but for running monitors for more than one band at the same event is hard. Monitor is hard even with a digital desk hahaha Thanks again! Cheers!
Love it. Mixbus
🙏 Thanks!
How did you geq these wedges?
Did you just leave vocal mics open onstage while ringing them out from the monitor console position and made your geq tweaks from there ?
Put the vocal mic on a stand pointing at the wedge, set the gain and eq at a normal place I would, then slowly turned it up in the wedge until it started to feedback. Then do a little bit of geq work to get it loud, just don’t do too much that you destroy the tone.
@@RattlinBonesClub Thanks a ton !
Quick question : if you had a nice 5 or 6-band PEQ at your disposal for that wedge, would you use this instead of the GEQ, or would you still use the GEQ ?
It seems that some (new school) people dig the PEQ (when it is at your disposal) even more than the GEQ for ringing out stuff.
MIXBUS ✌️❤️🇳🇿
How do you keep track of the settings for every band on an analog console? That's a thing i never really got.
He’s got 48 channels so I’m sure he can them all if that makes sense
Usually photograph or you can get channel send sheets, where you mark the send level for each band.
You could patch everything to a different channel but not really feasible.
A picture usually does the trick.
If it’s a very similar band and setup I’ll move the outputs and then try not to change gain/eq but just use the level to the different mix bus.
Or I will patch the channels I need on the back of the desk, so physically move the xlr to a different channel and make a note of which channels I need to move where
@@RattlinBonesClub Thx man. I know, bands can be very picky about stage sound and i only did live with digital consoles where i just need to set a new scene so i always wondered how to do it properly on analog.
@@jameswilkinson6530 Also thx for the insight. I still wonder how they did it in the times before smartphone. Or maybe that's why stage sound sucked there, haha.

You really should take care of the ground loop hum/buzz from the guitar amp as a sound engineer. (I am a sound engineer myself.)
What are the steps to get rid of the ground loop hum/buzz?
