A huge big hello from Ireland. I thoroughly thoroughly enjoyed your journey with the guys from the Styx team. I thought your pick giveaway was awesome, and it tickled me, because back in March of 1982 the band I was in at the time, were on tour in the states. One particular day, myself, our drummer, and guitar player took a stroll downtown. We turned a corner and seen a huge billboard. "City Center Theatre, STYX" So what else were men to do but head straight to the Box Office and purchase three tickets for the show that night. You couldn't ask for better, we got tickets for the very front row!! It was the "Kilroy was here tour" I have to say I was absolutely blown away by the show. But getting back to your giveaway, it struck a chord with me, because the night of the show, I managed to get one of JY's picks, a cool red one. At the end of the gig, I got to shake hands with all except Chuck, which broke my heart as being a bass player, I wanted to especially shake HIS hand. I managed to keep JY's pick safely for about thirty five years, but in or around 2019, I went to dig it out to reminisce, something I had done over the years, but could not find it. To say I was devastated would be putting it mildly!! I just had to share that little memory with you 😊 All the guys you spoke with were so lovely, and it was very sweet that they took so much time to chat with you. Truly legends I have to say. When I post this message, I'll discover a load of misspellings, as it's almost 4:30am here, and I'm cross-eyed with tiredness, as I'm just home from gigging. Now I watched your videos earlier today (Or should I say yesterday, but you know yourself, it's still today until I go to bed 😂) Sending you my very best wishes, and blessings from Ireland...... Man, The reason I play guitar is Tommy Shaw. He walked out playing Rockin' The Paradise and my life changed forever. I think I have played everyday since that day in Greensboro in 1980-81. My lifelong dream is to one day meet TS and tell him how much he improved the quality of life through music.

I remember seeing Styx in 1999/2000 on tour with REO Speedwagon and Survivor. Awesome show!

These techs are so nice! I've had the pleasure of being behind the scenes at more than a few festivals and you'll meet some techs that just think they're royalty. I will say, I recently got to meet Dimebag's/Zakk's tech for Pantera here a few months ago and he is the nicest guy in the world.
I was at that Deer Creek show. Loverboy was good, Styx was great, REO was....well.....we left about mid-set.
3 Pyx of Styx. It was hearing a kid holding a boombox outside the grocery store playing Renegade in 1980 that made me decide I was going to get a tape player. The rest is history.
Awesome video and cool to see the rig! This really hits home for me because I was Styx' social media manager for 2 years (Oct 2016 - Oct 2018). I worked a lot with Todd, who was always very gracious to do fan Q/A videos for me. It was a blast posting to 1.7M followers on Facebook and coming up with fun things to engage the band and fans in together. As a pro keyboard player, it was also awesome hanging with Lawrence on a couple of occasions and talking keyboard tech... he's an extremely generous, real, brilliant gentleman.
I got excited when they talked about Todd remoting in on Crash of the Crown during Covid, which he also did on The Mission well before Covid. I have some original cell phone video footage of Mission recordings in Nashville on March 24, 2016, where Todd was remote recording on "The Outpost" and "Greater Good." Tommy, his wife, Will and the other crew were watching as Todd (in TX) recorded in real-time over the other tracks.
I have a fun memory from back in June, 2017, where Styx and REO played at what was then called Verizon Amphitheater in Alpharetta, GA. I somehow found myself at a table in the green room with Ricky to my right, Mike Mettler (music journalist and long-time friend of the band) to my left, and Dave Amato (REO guitarist) to Ricky's right. Since Ricky was in The Babys in the early 80's, I broke the ice by pulling out my iPhone, cueing up a piano in Garage Band and playing the intro to "Isn't It Time," the Babys' 1977 hit that I absolutely loved as a kid. Ricky and Dave both found it quite amusing that I could play that on such a tiny keyboard. It was kinda cool connecting with 2 legends of rock for a tiny moment in time.
Speaking of that, Styx is timeless! The Mission is without a doubt one of the best albums from any classic rock band, IMHO. Keep up the great videos!!!!

I saw them last July 4th in Dubuque, IA from the second row right in front of Tommy. Styx was my first concert in 1981 (Salt Lake City) and Tommy was playing his Explorer and I have been an Explorer fan since and finally got a lefty one in 2017. When Tommy brought out the Explorer in Dubuque I gasped so loud he heard me and I let him know I have one because of him. During the next song and since I was in the second row he looked at me and tossed me a pick...my life is complete now.
As my dad mentioned just a few comments down, I've been a huge styx fan all 22 years of my life thus far! I'm pretty proud to say I'm one of their top listeners on spotify and have gotten the privilege to see them 4 times in my life, twice in the past 2 years. No show on the planet compares to theirs and thank you for giving us an inside look into the people and equipment that makes those shows possible, you've gained a new fan! And I would love to have any of the picks to add as the Cornerstone (no pun intended) of my Styx Collection!!

The average concert goer has no clue all the work that goes into making a single show happen. This work begins months in advance of the actual tour. I have worked in the production side for over 30 years and every artist and rig is different. Sometimes the artist really doesn’t know how his own rig works but there is always someone who knows it inside and out, these people truly make the show happen day after day. Damn I mean damnnnnnnnn. You know aside from any band, I admire all the gear and behind the scene stuff. These guys are the true artist in my book. I dont even know what the heck they talking about. Much respect to all those engineers man. Keep rocking.
Nice glimpse behind the scenes of one of the bands that helped turn me to music, and making music. I saw Styx as a tot in the early 70s in Kansas City, with Angel! Many years later, I worked stage construction & crew for Colorado Summer Jam with REO in the 80s. They gave me a fog machine to run, that the polarity was reversed on, so when I dropped the bucket and flipped the switch, the fog came the other way and enshrouded REO's family bleachers behind the stage right speaker stack. NOT MY FAULT! I didn't wire it! /embarrassing.

I want the picks! I had the privilege of seeing Styx live last year and they were probably one of the best mixed and sounding bands I've heard in a long time. As a live sound and studio engineer myself its been so intriguing watching the videos and seeing what they use on stage and at FOH and it's always a privilege getting to mix a great band vs. one that needs constant help. (I've definitely mixed both!)
Styx is definitely one of the best bands I’ve seen
I'm a fan of the band for so long that I listened to them with Curolewski. But I learned more about music (and what it takes to make it) from watching this video than I have in my 52 years. Anyway, hell yes, I want a pick, preferably Tommy's. His songs got me through some tough teen years and all I hope is to someday return the favor with at least the opportunity to tell him thank you.
I've been lucky enough to see them in the 70's, 80,s, 90's, 2000, and so on unfortunately not this year, I'm still hopeful. What a band, what a history.
Amazing content, this whole series on STYX it's a gold. Although camera work is shaky, you could work on that, except that it was great!
Had the very wet console event twice. once was a storm roll in at about 6:30PM during the sound check. the storm cell was supposed to miss us, but we got it dead on. Got the band covered, amp racks covered, etc, but the mics on stands were full of water you could pour out, and the delay tower didn't get the power cut in time, so shorted out an amp. We were up and running within 2 hours of the downpour, except lost the delay tower. Other event was at a park at a lake. The recreation department assured us the sprinklers were off for the weekend festival. Nope, FOH was down in the morning on tripped GFI breakers. It was another case of field stripping an SC-48 and drying it with a hairdrier. It recovered except one fader needed replaced.
It happens. Show business.
I don’t even remember how many times I had to pull out strips of the ATI Paragon to dry out the next morning.

I've been a Styx fan since 1977. I've seen them 12 or 15 times starting in 78. I saw the Kilroy show before things happened. In '96 I saw them with Todd for the first time. It's hard to believe that the new drummer has been with them all these years. I was a soundman for a local band in the late 70's for a few years and one of the things I always admired about Styx was a clean stage. Back then the stage monitors were under the floor and they always hid the guitar amps on stage. I made that a priority in our stage setups. They were one of the first bands with wireless guitar rigs and even back then I think the techs did the effect switching. They used to have spotlight operators positioned on the corners of the overhead rigging and they would know all of the song to properly light and follow the action. Back in those days Tommy, and JY would run back and forth on the stage while playing. It was very impressive. They move less today but I see Tommy's desire to run during many of his more recent performances. JY has always been my favorite member because of his confidence on stage so many years ago. Once he appears, he shines with confidence and his smile shows how much he enjoys being there. One of the things that I liked as a soundman working with that small band back in the day was the fact that they were also pros when it came to performing. Never mind what they did earlier that day, or even five minutes before showtime, when they hit the first note they nailed it. The only thing that mattered, like Tommy said, somebody might be hearing it for the first time live and you owe it to them to deliver. Since I worked with a band like that, I knew it was another reason why I liked the Styx approach to live performances. I spread the Styx story to any young person willing to listen because there are many lessons to be learned from a band, a family, a crew, and even the fans that have been in my Styx experience. The songs are great with such depth and meaning and the performances are top notch every time I see them.
I want the picks Tommy Shaw is my favorite member and the story of how he joined Styx is awesome. I got to see them on my birthday in 2017 in Atlanta coincidentally also with REO and Don Felder. It was the best show I'd seen in years. Thanks so much for making this video, I'm a studio producer now, but spent much of my life doing live sound in clubs (one of which I owned) We had a lot to do in that realm, but, it's mind boggling seeing what these guys went thru. This is the coolest video ever!! Styx is my sons favorite band, he is currently their number one listener on Spotify. He is 22 and completely obsessed with the band. We were fortunate to get to see this tour in Rogers Arkansas. Great show!!! Now to get to see how its all done is so amazing! Thank you so much for sharing. I would love the picks to give to my son. This series has been incredibly insightful, it really is staggering, the amount of effort, coordination, brain power, and sheer technology goes into these modern performances. I love seeing this kind of stuff! I am fortunate to play in an act that has 1/1000th of what this set up is, so I am absolutely fascinated by what these guys are doing from moment to moment with an act like this. We make minimal adjustments in the night.. I can't even imagine having adjustments in real time like this, both FOH and from the techs. Amazing!

I used to live in Terre Haute and several of my friends went to this show. It is quite a treat to see these videos. Love your channel and wish you all the best.
Seems like a wonderful touring family. They clearly take care of their people to have them stick around so long. Totally different idea of live performance than what draws me in. I want improvisation and inspiration in a live show. The idea of having someone other than the guitarist control their rig is antithetical for me. Lots of bands do it, and it makes sense if you are basically trying to recreate what you did in a studio. Different strokes and all that.
Both parts were AWESOME. Thank Chris and STYX. Things have changed a lot since I ran FOH in early 80's. WoW. Head swimming with all they have today. If you ever get a chance, do more!

Another great video. Interesting the contrast between the different rigs. I wonder if modern bands will ever match these style if set ups and volume of crew. These guys are clearly in the know and its important to get that information before it becomes lost.

This is Awesome. Styx was my very first concert ever on my 17th Birthday in 1981 at McNichols Arena in Denver. - and I last saw them at Red Rocks (as a Professional Concert Photographer) in 2016 with the Colorado Symphony. Phenomenal! ... and Tommy made for some really amazing images. Great to see them still at it!!

I think that was the best gear review I have ever seen. I dont think the average concert goer is aware of the amount of equipment & technology not to mention the hard work that goes into putting on a production of this magnitude. It was very interesting to me being a muscian myself how bands are getting away from stage sound & sending a direct signal to the front of the house. I would love to have those guitar pics your giving away Tommy Shaw & JY. These two are my favorite & looking forward to more content.
I just saw Styx last weekend in Tampa. They were awesome! This was the 6th time I've seen them. Reo and Loverboy sounded awesome as well. Great show!! I WANT A PICK 😀
