Paul said to the jailer when he asked how to be saved was to believe in the Lord Jesus. The word also says as many as received him to "them" gave he the power to become the sons of God. In order to obtain salvation one has to believe and receive the gift of salvation as any other gift. Though a gift is available to someone they cannot benefit if they don't receive it.
I just listened to this for the first time, just curious how you think about it today. I now know Jesus really did finish the work his Father gave him. You are free whether you stay in the jail cell or not, some of us enjoy the benefits of knowing the Truth.
