Nikon Z9 - The Un-Review

  • The Nikon Z9 is being celebrated as a big leap for the brand, and many independent reviews favour this new release. However, just because something is popular, doesn't make it the right choice for everyone (who can afford it). We do an un-review of the Z9, specifically looking how easy (or not) this camera is to use.
    We also recommend some other great reviews that dive very deep into this camera.

    Nice, thanks! For anyone worried about the electronic shutter, I would direct them to the Mathsphotographer video which literally shoots a fan with marked elements. The Z9 shots match another camera using its mechanical shutter. I can’t think of a clearer test. The electronic shutter in the other camera were not good and very different...

    Respectfully, do you really believe Nikon engineers would release a camera without a shutter knowing that this camera is needed to save the company, and have that camera display an issue with rolling shutter. Also in regards to the dozens upon dozens of respected reviewers not one has reported a rolling shutter issue. I don’t think it’s possible due to its industry leading sensor scan rate.

    • @mikeyraysivak4607
      @mikeyraysivak4607 2 роки тому +1

      Don't think rolling shutter is an issue, at least not worse than other cameras. As to z9 being needed to save the company, Nikon is already in the black (as in profitable) before the release of z9. But the z9 will keep competitions on edge, especailly Sony. It is in many respects equal or better than a1 and yet it is priced $1000 less. The real thump will be when the technologies of the z9 trickle down to the future generations of z6II & Z7II replacement. z9 is just the start of something good.

    Was thinking to switch to Sony or Canon for their video oriented cameras, but now maybe I'll take a moment to see this Z9 and next models have to offer in terms of video capabilities.
    I wish a shutter angle option and waveform could be added as a few upgrade however.
    And I'm still hoping that Nikon would decide to enter in the cinema camera world with something specifically build for video users. 🙏

    Very interested in video dynamic range. Can't wait to get mine and test it against my Epic-W. If it's good enough, I'm going to sell the RED and order another Z9 (which I'll probably have to wait a year for, haha). Hope the highlight rolloff is better than the Z6, which is pretty brutal.
    Hope they don't drag ass on the N-RAW firmware update like they did with the original Prores RAW on the Z6. That wait was excruciating while watching everyone else catch up.

    Does it make sense to acquire this case even though you are not pro' and you do not earn money with your photos? The idea is to have a very good case able to last 10 years...

    Nikon should add option to shoot with Anamorphic lenses. that will put this camera into a interesting place in filmmaking segment.

    It does seem like historically Nikon always comes in slow but like a sledge hammer with cameras like the F6 - F100 (film) than the Dslr's D850 and D6, and now mirrorless with the z9.
    I wonder if they will bother with a D850 equivalent mirrorless or if that will be a Z7iii with a following Z8 being a pixel beast.
    Though the Z9, whilst a Pro level sports camera also is priced as a point at which users like me after a powerful hybrid might jump from a z6 or z7 instead of waiting for the 4k - 8k internal prores recording to trickle down.
    The new 'Raw' image compression formats are also really impressive from I have seen.

      Yeah!! I'm waiting for what a Z8 may look like down the road. I need 10bit raw internal 4K 60p no crop if possible. I have a Z6II and although it's a fantastic camera, it's lacking in the video department. Don't want to attach external recorders or anything of that sort!!!

    I use both Fujifilm and Nikon, Nikon is easier to use... no need to dig deep to find something and so much easier to work with one hand... While Fujifilm, even with the old models. until today some functions are still a mystery to remember or even find.

    Excellent review. Crisp and to the point, one of the best in recent times! One point about the audience for this camera, my guess is that the majority of people who would be buying this will not be Professional sports journalists. Similar to the A1 I would think that many wildlife enthusiasts will buy this camera. Thanks

    I don't understand this retoric of Nikon sinking ship.. it's propaganda, always was.
    Nikon came up with the best DSLR ever made, and the best APSC DSLR ever made, the d850 and the d500, why would they shoot themselves in the foot by rushing into mirrorless?
    Sony were early adopters and because their DSLR line couldn't compete with Nikon or Canon pushed the mirrorless. and with a heavy campaign of influencers and aggressive marketing they did corner the mirrorless market for a while. but the DSLR market is still going strong in 2021.
    So I think the plan was all along for Canon and Nikon to jump into serios mirrorless in 2021, 2022.. Sony just make it look like they were behind, which they have never been. There still are more Nikon D4s,D5,D6, D500 or Canon 1dxIII at sporting events at the end of 2021 then any mirrorless cameras, let alone Sony cameras. (just look at the wilder fury fight, not one miriness in site. or the ending to the F1 championship in Dubai..)

    You're talking nonsense. Mechanical shutter is still susceptible to rolling shutter effects. It "protects you" from nothing (except dust). Shutter curtains traveling across the sensor in 1/250th of a second will produce EXACTLY the same rolling shutter effect as a shutterless sensor with a scan-speed equivalent to a 1/250th of a second. Which means that if your sensor scan is as fast as a mechanical shutter curtain travel speed - you will not see any difference between the two.

    • @vistek
      @vistek  2 роки тому

      From Nikon’s website:
      Rolling shutter distortion reduced
      Rolling shutter distortion can be produced with CMOS sensors when recording fast moving subjects with fast shutter speeds or when panning rapidly. With electronic shutters the CMOS sensor is turned On and the sensor scans line by line sequentially and with fast moving subjects rolling shutter distortion can be seen in the image. i.e. the downswing of a golf club in motion. With a mechanical shutter at fast shutter speeds the front and rear shutter curtains are often so close together that essentially only a slit of the image sensor is exposed at once which helps to reduce the effect of rolling shutter distortion.
      Faster flash synchronisation speeds
      Flash synchronisation is often faster with mechanical shutters than with electronic shutters. This is due to the characteristics of the electronic shutter and the scan rate of the image sensor. If you are shooting outdoors in bright conditions and you want to use the fastest flash synchronisation speed possible then the mechanical shutter is often the best option. i.e. Nikon 1 V3 mechanical shutter maximum flash sync speed is 1/250 sec., whereas the electronic shutters maximum flash sync speed is 1/60 sec.
      www.nikonimgsupport.com/eu/BV_article?articleNo=000006443&configured=1&lang=en_GB&sfdcIFrameOrigin=null
      From Fujifilm’s website: When shooting pictures of fast-moving scenes, there is often time for a subject to move slightly as the electronic shutter closes line by line, and this can cause some pretty strange-looking effects. The propellers on aircraft appear to bend, for example, and the wheels on fast-moving cars can look oval. You’ll also notice problems in the background of images shot with a panning moving-camera technique. Where action is concerned, mechanical shutters still perform best, as they effectively freeze movement at the same point in time everywhere in the frame.
