Fixing A SNOW PLOW Truck During A BLIZZARD
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 січ 2024
- A local school decided to buy their own snow plow truck to take care of their campuses... and it broke during a snow storm earlier this year. They've been using it without power steering for a couple storms now but it's nearly impossible to drive with all the weight on the front end. Today we're going to jump in and fix it, hopefully making everyone's lives easier.

At last, the return of Gabe! Is there anyway that you can get Gabe, Jake, Eric, and maybe your Dad to head up to the Lake House for a weekend of tech and shenanigans ? It could be epic! Get to work on that.😊
Lake hose….😂
Couldnt think of a more boring video idea
@@dirtycomment2324 LOL!
@@dirtycomment2324 I bet that you can .
Who doesnt love that Gabe quote: ‘Im always sore after I plow…’. Hahahahah
JR, tell Gabe that penicillin will take care of that soreness after plowing!
Gabe is a treasure!
Always good to have Gabe in an episode. Good job on the OBS.
8:38 A tip that I saw was to tape a sheet of cardboard over the radiator, to prevent any accidental damage. Remove cardboard, when everything is reassembled.
Great idea
Always a pleasure to see Gabe.
You guys work well together and have fun to boot.
Good to see Gabe!!
I used to be the mechanic for a parks department in a suburb of KC back in the early 00’s and we had 2 95’ Chevy 3/4 tons with 350’s left over in our small 4 truck plow fleet. Every 2 years or so they needed t-cases and power steering pumps due to plow duty and other abuse. I can do those jobs in my sleep now even without a lift lol…
is winter there just like a month or why are trucks used for this instead of more dedicated snowplower equipment? like in finland they're more like tractors made for it. they used to have like the shavers with the plow in the middle of the vehicle(like used for road building) ages ago too.
@@lasskinn474 It depends on where you are at in the country. Northern states, we can see snow for up to 6 months.
Alot of snow plow equipment is pickup trucks with plows on them, and a salter in the back. Skid steers, front end loaders and tractors are also used, but they come at a much higher cost and are generally left in one place for use vs a pickup truck that can be driven between jobs.
@14:38 "I'm always sore after I plow" LOOOOL
Not for nothing but, good friends are priceless. That’s what this video is all about.
In my past life (around 1992-1994), I was a general purpose vehicle mechanic in the Air Guard in Niagara Falls, NY. One of my annual tours was during a snow event off the great lakes. Heavy wet snow, I forget how much. The snow plows kept coming in with busted something or other. We busted butt to keep those plows going to keep the flightline and roads cleared. All the wet snow melting in the shop made it a miserable job as we would be all wet by the time the job was done.
I am always sore after I plow,, that is great..
I am old enough to remember when snowplows had all heavy stuff bolted to the truck and just the blade was removed during the non snow months. Now, the blade, rams, lights etc are all one unit that comes off the truck by pulling a few large Cotter pins.
Good seeing Gabe again! How about a house update?
Always good to see Gabe!
For the last six years, I have a whining power steering pump on my 2000 Tahoe just waiting to fail. Now I know what a job it will be to remove the old pump. I didn't know it had a variable speed pump, but it now explains the change in pitch of the whine when starting from a dead stop. Thanks for the video.
@4.23 "sometimes if you let go of the ratchet it flings it into the next dimension"
😂🤣😆
Gabe! always glad to see him on the channel!!!!
Do you bring Gabe back when the viewership drops ? He’s an instant boost 😁
That 18" longer than a Tahoe truck looks to be in great shape
It really is, and they got it dirt cheap 💯
I have a 98 GMC suburban I got for $2800 last summer, and it's my favorite vehicle I own. This was a cool and educational video to watch. Thank you.
Together again! Finally an easy job!!
Always good to see Gabe on the channel.
That Suburban is honestly too clean to be a plow truck. These GMT400'S are shooting up in value since their classics now. I would find one that's beat up and rusted out and use that for a plow truck.
They say bad things come in 3's = well is the third stinker video in a row! (no offense to Gabe, we love him!)
🍺😂👍🏼
What a great looking OBS. I wished my 88 looked as good!
I would assume with this massive snow plow the whole steering systen has a lot more strain on it than without. Seems normal for me...
TY Gabe for keeping the roads safe
🍺😉👍🏼
Blizzard 😂 Your neighbor state to the west considers that flurries 😎
I literally just did this on my 7.4 a few weeks ago, you have no idea how much I wish my pulley came out like that. I had to cut…
Always hood to see Gabe!
Glad to see you back Gabe, un sored. And happy new year bud.
Sounds like you need it, handy to have around. My Dart is factory fast ratio 16 to 1 manual steering 4 turns lock to lock and very hard to turn, I used to one hand it when moving 😎
Good work.👍 I have a couple hours of plowing to do tomorrow with my PT Cruiser and 6 ft cable lift blade.
Still crazy that you have a snow plow PT Cruiser and Neon 😂
@WatchJRGo My Neon is now AWD too, I did a major build on it.
Great to see Gabe! I'm jealous of how much snow you guys are getting
That name again is Mr.Plow.
In the last few episodes you had mentioned that you have changed your audio setup and asked for feedback, so I'm not trying to troll you: The audio is clear, but it's way too low now. I have to crank the volume, then when an ad or your music comes on it blasts and I have to scramble to crank it down. It doesn't matter if it's internal speakers, external speakers, or headphones and is across multiple devices. I've been subscribed for many years now, usually watch your videos during breakfast, so I'm not just a newbie here to complain. Keep up the great content in this new year!
I had that shaft snap on my 98 awd astro. It's alot more interesting with the hydro boost system when you lose your power steering and brakes at the time. 😮
So cool to see you having fun in your on space
Good to see Old man Sanchez! No snow here on the west coast of Canada.
🍺😉👍🏼
gabe is back. snow in Kansas wow.
Welcome back Gabe!!!!
🍺😉👍🏼
Always good to see Gabe.
Tom Cruise (Gabe) has the jokes ha ha 😔

@@Gabe-ABNCW3 hahaha
So where is all the footage of having to bleed out the pump? I remember watching a guy on UA-cam say you have to turn the wheels lock to lock 100X! I thought that was nuts. I decided to just vacuum bled it from the return line and it worked in seconds! Topped off the pump fluid and ran with it. I also got the other pulley with the openings to remove the pump. Much easier if I had to do this again. You guys work great together.
Take care.
-Jon
Also know it's a good video when Gabe shows up.
Grew up in Chicago land now live in southern Alabama I don't miss the snow not one bit.
having the shaft break is preferred to it seizing up and taking out the belt. I had an AC compressor seize on me way back in the day (early 90's ) driving from Dothan to Panama city for a computer repair call. ( for Dell ) luckily it had 2 v-belts so I just cut the one for the ac and and was able to continue. It was summer so it sucked but there is lots of dead area on that trip and cell phones were expensive back then.
‘Ole Dothan AL!!
I was at Rucker for several years.
@@Gabe-ABNCW3 Never went to the Fort ( maybe class trip I don't remember in the early/mid 80's ) but as an adult went to Enterprise often. Grew up in Webb.
Can't believe it took until nearly the end for Gabe to make a plowing double entendre joke.
😜
That's a beautiful red truck!
Thanks for the lesson.
the wireless lapel mike didn't pick up Gabe too well. may need to revisit. You were loud and clear
A wild Gabe appears!
John's workshope looks like the snow on the outside found it's s way on the inside walls ...😂
0:38 - That's what she said.... lol 😂😅
Great Video as usual JR. You should look into investing a rolling table to put your new parts on when working on vehicle. Using the floor for parts and tools are killing my back lol 😂
Ah yes, JohnRoss is back to working on the floor. And with Gabe. Should we start a go fund you for some steel benches with a vice.
I grew up in Michigan and had a brother that worked at Saginaw steering gear for many years
I love when Gabe and the others join. Always fun.. and the jokes are the best. Thanks for the laugh!
That looks like a '96 or later L31 Vortec 350. Not an L05 TBI 350. GMT400 trivia.
But JR is never wrong
@@canucklehead8053 Well, he kept calling it a tbi 🙃
@mph5896 sarcasm my friend 😆
It is, it's a 99... I just see a 350 and instantly go "oh a boat anchor" ⚓️
@@WatchJRGo Slow vs Painfully Slow. But at least they guzzle gas.
Nice work bench bro!
11:34 YUM!!!
🍺😉👍🏼
Those old 350s are still around and serving their purpose.
I added an aftermarket leaf spring kit to the front of my '85 Dodge half-ton, Western snowplow, 7 1/2'. Back in my day. It helped.
We need to hear an update on Gabe’s build of the Opel w his kiddo!
I may not pay attention to other videos with Gabe, but is he John's brother?
They sure look like family!
Lol, not even close. He's an old neughbor/friend. JR'S brother was in a recent video helping replace the Focus clutches.
Shit yeah! A Gabe episode!!!
You said TBI, but that might be the good old spider injectors.
I like Gabe. For a while, I thought Gabe and JR were brothers.
Dude.... nice fix and I bet it's awesome to such a nice and heated shop. Made that job 100 times easier. And He can plow the neighborhood on a way out. ;-)
It is called a saginaw pump. They were used from the 70's on before that there was another pump with a round reservoir at the bottom.
The 4.3 in my 92 s10 did the same thing except the shaft actually came out and the pulley landed in the bottom of the fan shroud. Threw on a shorter belt to get home.
That’s one beautifull plow
That's a vortec 350 not TBI which is good for about a 60hp difference. The hard starting might be the injector poppet valves if it hasn't had the upgrade to the updated injector head.
John Ross it’s a vortec! Not a tbi easily can tell the difference man 😂
I have a 95, 2 door tahoe, runs like a champ
God I wish we needed a snow plough here , end of summer and very humid
I'm always sore after I plough. :D
Vorteck spider injection obd2 not tbi 😂
Gaaaaaabbbbbeeee 👋👋👋 missed you brother 🍻
🍺😉👍🏼
The suburban would be dope with a 5.3 swap with a whippel super charger !!
Some of the older Dodge Ram Trucks and B-Vans did that same thing the shaft
would break if they had no steering just put a screwdriver between the pulley and
the pump pry a little and you would see the pulley move out just like that.
Glad your snow plow works. Try not to have a Jeremy Renner moment...
You got so lucky my suburban did this on the highway at 70 mph and the shaft slid out ate the belt the fan and the tranny lines it was a mess looked like the st valentines day massacre hahahahaah
I didn't know Gabe had a job !! I thought you just paid him for his special appearances !!!! 😂😂😂 He always seems like he continues to bring you problems!!
Sometimes it’s like that! 🤣🤣
It's not a tbi, it has a spider injection system.
No snow in mn. Maybe 1” on ground so far.
Fun fact: Some early 80s Datsuns also had Saginaw pumps.
Those had the electric valve on the back of the pump, i have run a fleet of that gen and i always swap over to the 92-94 fullsize blazer pump and hose to eliminate that valve
When I did this job at 16 on my 96 Sierra I pulled the shroud and the fan and it came right out
I'm pretty sure thats a Vortec not a TBI 350
It is, I just see an old boat anchor unless it's an LS 💯
Gabe is my homie 😎
Sheesh - you're getting pounded there too!?!? Utah is buried DEEP in snow right now. And it's not going to let up for 4 days.
HOW is that truck not rusty as heck?! Every single plow truck in Michigan has huge holes
We don’t have the weather you guys do. Usually snow is gone after a few days and the trucks can be washed and stay clean.
Extra 18”. That’s what she said 😂
My name again is Mr Plow! errr Mr Gabe Plow
Surprised that no Mr. Plow or Plow King references were made.
Gabe doesn’t know his own strength 🤣
I had a 99 suburban with a plow. It was a beast but boy it’s so figgin long to maneuver. 😂
