We keep making IT more and more complex and hard to understand and control. Some of the IT work I used to do is now automated and now my job is to maintain and develop those automation technologies. That sounds like good news, but big tech and the whole industry are constantly challenging each other to make more and more sophisticated software and UX in turn making the software more and more complex. Driving more and more complex automation software. The high expectations on software/apps from users, I would argue, puts a big burden on IT in all IT organisations. Challenging developers and operations teams to adopt complex operations software and practices, making it even harder to understand all the layers.
More and more layers of abstraction away from the binary arithmetic certainly doesn't help with education. I suppose modern UI's have improved a lot in many places but at the cost of making it impossible for anyone to understand (even on a basic level) the whole technology stack. Not to mention how we're suppose to make this mess secure from increasing cyber threats. And the hot abstraction now is of course Large Language Models (used by ChatGPT and others) and related AI technologies bringing us even further from the binary. We need to strive for more simplicity and IMO lower the expectations just a little bit on the software in our lives. Less "web scale" and more homegrown tech stacks that most people in IT have a chance to grasp.
Very prescient televions programme. The book really impressed me at the time. But do we have self-making machines? Martin pioneered CASE computer aided software engineering but it is still rather like workbenches and GUIs not computers being creative as far as I know.
Are we going to get there soon? Or is there a reason why computers are finding it difficult? I was very unimpressed by a data mining presentation recently but, perhaps it is about to take off.
Perhaps computers will never be able to split themselves in the way that humans have since they have no sin. Sin is self revulsion. I don't think that computers can be programmed to find themselves revolting and split themselves, so that they create themselves.
Computer created software may be difficult to patent.
James Marting lived on his own island.
timtak1 when A.I. Is standard and developed properly in computers, so that computers can become self aware and learn about mortality, ware and tear, survival this will be possible. A computer can do what we program it to do. Most Science Fiction becomes Science fact. Man was built in the image of God, and is King over the animals on earth we are capable of anything we think of. I hope this answers your question.
Despite the many advances in technology and funding, education hasn't improved.
We don't have the 2 day work week.
Many predictions came true, but many didn't (perhaps because of a too optimistic utopian view).
Instead of working less and making more, we are working more and making less. Oh well.
