One percent raise? Are they for real? That’s like a slap in the face.

And 1/4 of a percent the following two years... did I hear that correctly?! So annoying.

Amanda, you are my hero. I am one year from retirement. I have been working on my public address to the school board after I retire. In fact, I have strongly thought about running for school board so that the 'teachers' will have a friendly ear there that will listen to them and fight for them. This will be my way to become a throne in the side of the district and let them know that now there is someone on the board that will oppose the district and fight for the teachers. I too am sick and tired of negotiations that go nowhere. Every year we go to arbitration, every year we get less and less. I was talking to an education professor at the University of Kansas and they say that these past few years the number of people enrolling in the teaching program has gotten less and less. The ones that are avoiding the abyss are the smart ones. Go where you are appreciated, the work conditions are acceptable and the pay is good. I fear that public education is going the way of the dodo and private schools will be the norm. Amanda, you rock.

What's up with that fancy board room? No wonder they don't have money to pay the teachers

@Too Wun what part of shut up are you not understanding?

@Too Wun Not her fault to hold the burden anymore, all teachers in fact have been carrying a burden of a failing educational system and a lack of true communication. No reason for teachers to be put into such a position where they have to stand up for themselves in such a way, the teacher unions and the board here have not only failed the teachers, but the students. Again, I do not blame the teachers, underappreciated, underpaid, overworked (some are lazy sure, but not all). While other careers (namely sports) get far more money, for far less value (entertainment over education). Which is wrong, and are glorified above all others all the same.
Perhaps you should reflect on that, before throwing stones at teachers, who already have enough on their plates, without your 2 cents.

@Too Wun I've watched the official, this happens at the 42 min mark. (the video here is about 45-60 seconds after she started speaking).
I still stand by what I said, because your points aren't valid enough for me. Because the 'do your job part' requires the board to do theirs, and in turn the government to do theirs by funding/setting up guidelines. Which they've failed at doing, money has been taken from education for years, the board isn't listening (as shown) and at the end of the day it is all about the children. If the kids don't get an education, then the teachers/board have failed. However, when the board has failed its teachers, there is no way for the teachers to carry that burden forever, either the board, teachers or kids (lack of education, parents move to new districts etc.) will give out.
So while I see your point, I'd argue your point isn't relevant here, or at least doesn't bear the weight you believe it does. Sure, Hitler used kids to disarm countries and take them over 'peacefully', liberals are doing that with David Hogg and the 2nd amendment rights and with Greta Thunberg with global warming. However, those are separate topics that revolve around 'adult matters', right?
Look. At the end of the day, this comes down to education, communication and of course, the kids. And if teachers stand up for themselves but it also takes the board to listen, and if no one ends up listening - then there is no communication. In order for either side to get their point across communication needs to happen, but it's obviously pretty bad if teachers are resigning due to lack of communication and pressure on the teachers (wrongfully), instead of the board. Since ultimately the board has the final say, due to the teachers being the 'middle man' they get the brunt of it, and I don't blame her one bit for quitting on a system that quit on her years ago.

@Too Wun Going to end this 'discussion" here, since we can probably settle with an "agree to disagree" thing. Didn't know it was professional to use emoji's though, interesting.

Are these cuts that bad? Isn't it just bigger classroom size and a bit less pay? What is it like being a teacher in the USA?
I must say however, In Canada you make 90k with 2months off. I don't think this lady should quit her job if she's crying and loves the students that much. Talented and educated??? Hmm maybe take a trip around the world and see what talented and educated gets you. People in third world countries would be lucky to get $20 a day. The world is unfair face it, but the money you ask comes from the citizens. Please go back to work and help the children of the future.

Just a bigger classroom and less pay, yeah sounds like they should all just accept that...not.. more students to teach, less personal time for the students and less pay for more work, who doesn't want that? I'm not a teacher but a bit more respect for the people who are educating the future of a country is definitely needed.

@@JustJulesO Take a look at teachers in the USA and see what they make. A country that has a way better economy than Canadas teachers get much less
