This was really great! I've kept on coming across the name Barbara 'Babe' Paley in various biogrphies and autobiographies I've read and always thought I really ought to find out who she was. But I always got distracted, so this was like finding a lost piece of a jigsaw puzzle. I now understand *why* she was mentioned and understand why she was considered important/powerful in people's lives. Thank you so much.
You really have to understand that back then outside employment for women was a rarity and frowned at…. a women’s job/ goal was to marry and marry well.
Thank you for this. This was the peak of "New York Society" and, for good or bad, it doesn't really exist anymore. I think Gore Vidal might make an interesting subject. He was a very well known writer, political pundit and society figure of the day and very scandalous. He was known for his feuds with Capote, Norman Mailer and W.F. Buckley. He isn't much talked about these days. He is mentioned in "Feud". He was openly bisexual.
I have heard the name Babe Paley for many years but never knew just who she was. Thank you for this beautifully produced profile. The many original photos are amazing. Keep the episodes coming. You are a gifted storyteller and video producer.
Thank you for this. It was lovely and fascinating. Truman Capote was fascinated by how these women made themselves and their lives into works of art. He called it an act of self creation.
Inside sources have informed me that she actually passed in 1974, and that her friends and family quietly covered up the loss, in order to better plan her celebration of life and to sort up some lose ends that she expressed to them that she wanted to have sorted. Several persons close to her communicated this to me, and that she had passed 3 to 6 months after the cancer diagnosis.
Is it you again with your powerful histories of the past! I pressed that Like button first # 52 Knowing this one will be great as well. Fantastic Sponsor presentation! Congratulations! Thank you FLives :)
Thank you for sharing, both about the Bebe Paley, and about the ufo 3! I have one as well and feel that most people would benefit from a little more hydration in their life
Hello Forgotten Lives. 😊 I have to catch up on on this video, sorry for being a little late. I appreciate your content since it's always contains some fascinating individuals, and details about their interesting lives. Thank you for all you do in these videos. 😁
I thought Babe was a looker, but her rival--Ms. Guinness--looked even more attractive, in my opinion; but the one who tops them all is the actress who portrayed Babe. Sorry, can't remember their names. I think it goes without saying they were likely all very vain.
Yes, I’m watching Capote vs Swans. It’s so good. The casting is spot on. So are the lines, the costuming and the sets/ locations. I finally know why Capote latched on to them and why he did them dirty. His beautiful mother aspired to be like these women but didn’t stand a chance. She had a LOT of low value men, was almost a whore & between abandonments Capote, as a boy, was in the hotel room where these liaisons took place. That’ll scar a kid for life for sure.
In the 1940s, women born into rich and socially elite families were groomed to marry into other rich families. The lives of these debutantes were cotillions, coming-out balls, vacations, and education in the best schools in the country. Babe Paley was indoctrinated into the New York Society. She had the pedigree to be among the greatest socially accepted women in New York. Being the best-dressed woman and considered a beautiful woman. Her life was privileged. She had looks and connections. and a great wardrobe. Marriage would be her role as Paley's trophy. He married for the connections, pedigree, and image she could provide. Theirs was a good partnership. Her need to live up to the role must have been stressful. She was also accepting of his philandering and knew he was not interested in her sexually. Marriage in the upper echelons would need to keep up appearances, and expectations, like a business.
Naomi Watts absolutely nailed the role of Babe Paley in the most recent film The character study most likely involved hanging around high society balls and charity events. It's actually quite easy to master the "Newport Jaw" style of speaking. Just think Thurston Howell the Third. Conversation involves folks talking as though their jaws are wired shut. Lots of "Dahling," and "Rally," as in, "Rally, dahling, you simply MUST attend Buffy's apres ski soiree, dahling! Rally, it's absolutely the event of the SEASON!" I used to have to hobnob with the well-heeled set in our town when my husband was trying to build up his new medical practice. Additionally, our city had just opened a gorgeous center for the performing arts and I starred in at least one musical every season. The wealthy are mad for nights out at The Theatah, dahling, and the patrons/donors spare no expense on cultural events. We actors KNOW that we would have no places to perform, were it not for bored socialites that give generously. I, myself would be mega rich if I had a dollar for every blue blood woman that would sidle up to me at cocktail receptions and say, "You know, I wanted to be a serious, dramatic actress - and I think I would have been a good one - of course, Daddy would have been utterly MORTIFIED! Mummy would have disowned me!" I would think to myself, "Jeeze, lady, we're not carnies on the midway! Acting professionally is a legitimate occupation. Damn, read the room!" My mother's people were power players in state politics, so I have always rubbed shoulders with Old Money and Trust Fund Babies. Personally, I comport myself with the same level of interest and commitment to being a decent human being whether I am yachting or shooting pool in a dive bar. Billionaires don't impress me one whit. I am impressed by single mothers that go to a job each day and although money is tight, they raise fine, good hearted children. Those that operate shelters that rescue precious animals or older gentlemen that worked 45 years as a hotel porter or elevator operator and kept a jovial attitude, no matter what life challenges were off the clock. The kinds of people that take pride in what they do. Day in and day out, they show up and they are always an asset to their employer. They show up and make everyone's day brighter. That is who I admire, unheralded every day heroes.
So stylish, some would say so beautiful , so slim , so wealthy So vain , so used , so empty, so fashionably lonely . I am glad not to be a swan . Ducks swim on the water too. Ducks survive better.
These women and their husbands, were HORRIBLE parents. My goodness.. lol.. what is the point of bringing life into this world when you know you're too selfish to care for them and end up abandoning your children . O_o
Well, you can’t say her life was boring for sure ! However, I don’t think she was a very happy woman. Way too much drama 🤪 The children were just to show off at her discretion 😢 so sad 😞. 👵🏻👩🌾❣️
I am getting tired of hearing the word, "Babe" being uttered by another woman from a nation in the commonewealth or whatever in a sarcastic tone. I don't believe that I am the only person alive today who feels that way.
Why suggestion of drugs? Maybe if you listened well I hear a little lisp but also a other language. You wouldn’t want to hear me speaking English due its not my first’s language it’s Dutch and then French. So my English depends on the accent I hear. Never learned English at school but self learned.

I have one of these and love it. I paid a lot more for mine. I can honestly recommend it.
I can’t believe FOREO sponsored you! It’s a great product! I highly recommend it
😂😂😂❤❤❤
Even though most of these people seem shallow or unpleasant, it is still interesting to hear how they effected the world of which they were a part.
Cushing's disease was named after Babe's Father the neurosurgeon
That's so interesting! Thank you for bringing that up.
Wow thanks for mentioning that.
Indeed.
That’s interesting 👍🥰
It's good to know, thank you!
Another great story Forgotten Lives!

"Socialite" - euphemism for unemployed and filthy rich.
Yes, famous just because she's famous.
Jealous much! Lol

@@donnashomin357 Nope, I'm an introvert, so no unnecessary socializing for me. And I have enough money to live comfortably enough.

For a bit, he was Jackie O's "step brother." 😁😑

Very interesting information on a prominent figure of a world that is now long gone. Thanks
My pleasure!
Thanks for these great cases Forgotten Lives
I’m so glad these videos have closed captions ❤
Always wonderful content ❤
Unique!
Great video but I'm wondering why Capote decided to write that book about his swans. Did he not realize he was going to screw up his good life?
He was compelled to love them AND hate them as he did his beautiful abusive mother. Not sure if he was blind to this or saw the connection.
@@MapleCheerUphe was really damaged goods, poor thing
I don't find her life the least bit scandalous, but rather empty and boring.
You can stop showing and or sharing just how envious you are.
It’s getting very boorish. 🤦🏻♀️

Thank you for sharing this. Professional and informative, as always.
Find it curious, after all mentioned, her death was left with a simple slab.
Happy to see you have a beauty sponsor. You deserve it.

He was a broke jealous drunk who saw a sucker so he licked it is what I gathered. Everyone has a past that doesn’t give u a pass to hurt others
