      This race showed the potential Michael had as a sprinter...he usually will turn in 24s the first 50, in here he turned 23.3!! Thats insane for a swimmer that's not a sprinter.

    Cavic was right, this totally put swimming back on the map. Sometimes it's not just about who wins, it's about the competition itself. This was awesome, and it was what made me start watching swimming again. Good job both Phelps and Cavic. And Cavic was a great sport about it too.

    Phelps is the GOAT, but people don't give Cavic enough credit. He is an outstanding swimmer and a freak of nature. He did, after all, go under 50 seconds in 100 LCM fly. He was just unfortunate to have been out-touched by Phelps 2 years in a row. However, keep in mind that if there had been no Phelps, people would probably refer to Cavic as a legend, as they did Crocker, once upon a time.

      It’s not about 0.01 ppl, you just have to understand how much of a monster Phelps is, psychologically speaking. He is a winner .. he just believes deep down that he is gotta win no matter what and does it all the time, even when not being in his best shape.
      Nothing but respect for him.
      .. Even notice his body language right before swimmin any final, he looks incredibly stressed even though he won many finals before, it simply shows how much he cares of every single race .
      He is an example to follow either in sports or any other field.

    • @guntodd
      @guntodd 5 років тому +3

      Harrison Gu silly statement. By your statement, the 3rd placed guy can say if it wasn’t for Phelps and Cavic, everyone would be talking about him.

  • @geoffbruce8605
    @geoffbruce8605 9 років тому +125

    To me, this may actually have been the most satisfying swim of Phelps' career.
    Obviously the 18 gold medals, and especially the 8 in Beijing were special. He would probably say that the 400 Free Relay in Beijing was the best. But this one was about as personal as you ever see swimming rivalries get.
    In a sport in which you literally cannot talk trash to each other during the event, this was intense stuff based on all the controversy about their race a year before in Beijing and Cavic talking shit about Phelps ever since. Add to that all the intrigue about Cavic supposedly having a superior suit to Phelps, and Michael touching the wall first had to be incredibly satisfying for him.
    You can see in his reaction that it's not so much celebration as it is defiance. After a year of shit-talking, Cavic tries to finally be a good sport after losing again and Phelps is just like "Nah."

    • @afghaaj
      @afghaaj 8 років тому +20

      It should have be one gold less in Beijing, since Cavic really touched the tile first.

    • @dchang11
      @dchang11 8 років тому +33

      +afghaaj Cavic fucked up the finish in Beijing. He lifted his head up going into the wall. Phelps finished in a streamline. If Cavic kept his head down, or did an extra half stroke, he would have won.

    I don't know man... Phelps practically lived in the pool his whole life. He never took a day off, not Christmas, not his birthday, nothing. The only break he's ever taken was after the Olympics after literally swimming most of his life.
    You can say he has the body for it and the genetics, but I really do think his #1 attribute is the amount of effort and time he puts into what he does.

    any effort which creates less drag. His "short" legs allso provides perfect balance in the turns and a powerflull kick, which is his trademark. This combined with his machine like work out regiment and his competitiveness, and his mental strength, makes him the best swimmer in the world.

    This record is going to last over 10 years, if they stick with textile suits. Phelps time in london was 51.21, and that was the gold medal time. How anyone is going to beat 49.82 is just beyond me. I don't even know how anyone is going to go sub 50 ever again, let alone break the world record!

    @thrasher702wc not to discredit your comment since Cavic did train here most of his life. But for this particular race or meet ever since the Olympics Cavic trained in Italy with an Italian coach.

    The suits became such a big controversy that they decided to put a regulation on what suit you could wear. For guys: The suit can only be between your waist and you knees and anything in between that. Girls are allowed shoulders to knees.

    aww it's cool man about dude.. i was actually chuckling when i typed that..which is why i put it in quotes as a funny LOL
    And yes you are so right.. both amazing swimmers...we both know that there will come a day when Phelps retires and when he does, NO ONE will be able to touch cavic... not that i am a big fan of his...but we both agree he is a FAST swimmer.. heck.. if it takes THAT much to try and beat Phelps , then when he is gone no one will challenge Cavic...just my opinion :)

    What you Americans need to understand is that we Serbs don't hate Phelps.I respect everything he did and I think he is the greatest swimmer ever and will be greatest for a very long time.We just want Cavic to beat him that's all.We only fight against the best in the world and Phelps is the best.
    About the race in Beijing that is history and I can't wait their next race on WC in 2011 or maybe even sooner.
    Peace all and one more time Congratz Phelps you are the best of the best.
