To me, it is describing how once you are in an established relationship, you fall into patterns during fights. You get mad, you realize you might be at fault, you eventually reconcile the guilt with any lingering resentment and apologize. You see subtle differences in the lyrics of the chorus as the song progresses, with the last chorus showing the recognition by both members of the relationship that the pattern exists. "We realized we're both to blame but what could we do? Yesterday, you just smiled at me 'Cause it'll still be two days 'til we say we're sorry"
I think that too , but what BP is saying is gibberish is their relationship we are eavesdropping in on and not part of ! Think about any fight you’ve ever had . If someone walking by had heard it , they’d think it’s gibberish too bus the context is between them . The fact that the rhyme repeats and they’re doing wasabi and sorry. Says it’s repetitive . B P is looking too close to the lyrics and not the context of the content . So he’s not making sense of it . One time my sister and I were waiting in a line and a person walked next to us and said. 5,5,55,5 Fuck it ! Turned around and walked off ! He knew the context , we didn’t . But we still say it occasionally to each other and we know that context ! lol . That’s what makes that song great ! We can relate without relating
In my opinion what might sound like gibberish at first glance is just topics, reasons they argue about, which can range anywhere from food tastes to cinema to any minor thing. Think of it like listening in on somebody having an argument over a phone. You only get half the conversation and on its own it can sound like random gibberish because it's taken out of context.
I never thought about it like that! It’s been one of my favorite songs since I was a kid, but I always assumed the story was in the chorus and just had fun trying sing along to the verses. This makes so much more sense!
And these hip hop breaks very much came from their early live show days where both of the singers could just break into freestyle rap that was VERY stream of conscious/pop culture references.
I loved when they sang at the SLC Olympics and wore the Canadian speed skating kit. Hysterical. For those who don't remember there were evening/night concerts with different bands every night and BNL was just one of those bands.
The rap part is a kind of stream of consciousness for ADHD folks. Yeah, you're thinking about your relationship, and it seems like a roller coaster, but guys....our minds wander. "What's he thinking about?" Chinese chicken, Samauris, Anime, and racing cars. It's like that for some of us.

There is ALSO the Evil Kneevil (not quite sure how to spell this) reference when the lady is suited up on the motorcycle & attempts to jump over an old Toronto (reference to Toronto - near their home town) streetcar. They like to use a lot of topical references to their time (from childhood onwards.)
Wikipedia-Ed Robertson wrote the ideas for the non-rap "choruses" with the concept being the structure of a fight where the protagonist knows they're wrong and is just trying to save face. Robertson wanted to come up with a rapped verse for the song but all attempts failed. Bandmate Steven Page suggested he simply improvise the rap, as the two did onstage every night. Robertson heeded the advice and set up a video camera. He improvised the song at a slower pace to make rhyming easier and arrived at about four minutes of rap. He sent it to Page, who told him not to change a word. Two minutes of the improvising was almost directly compiled (with very little, if any, tweaking) into the verses of the song. Due to its improvised nature, the rapped sections are not intended to have any direct relation to the plot of the sung sections. The lyrics in the liner notes from Stunt contain some additional lines of rap that did not make it into the recorded version.
I saw Bare Naked Ladies live 20 years ago when they were touring with Alanis Morissette. One of the best concert experiences I've ever had. They are just fun! And her voice was amazing.
He's rapping about generational stuff. The 80s Harrison Ford movie Frantic, 90s XFiles scifi tv show, the car is from 70s Starsky & Hutch tv show etc. I guess no matter your relationship problems your still living in the fun times of 80s and 90s with 70s reruns.

Guys who never heard of them would pay the cover charge expecting to see strippers…. 😂😂😂. It worked and people heard their music. 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️. Best marketing troll in rock history. Loved the reaction. Canadian Gen-X guy here. I grew up listening to these guys. The core of BNL (Ed Robertson and Steven Page) were schoolmates but really only met and bonded at Music Camp in High School. They started to make a name for themselves in the Greater Toronto Area (they're from a 'burb called Scarborough, also home to Mike Myers) and famously their name got them banned from performing at New Years concert at Toronto City Hall. You really nailed it when you said that they must have a great sense of humor. Some of their early hits on Canada include songs called; "if I had a Million Dollars", "Be My Yoko Ono". They produced a self-made demo tape in 1991 to send to labels, and despite not getting signed. word of mouth and direct sales of the cassette at shows eventually led it to be carried by music stores and eventually achieving Platinum "Record" status in Canada. 'One Week' was the only really big US hit, but some others charted like "Brian Wilson", "Pinch Me" and "The Old Apartment". They have always had great acoustic numbers as well as these fun, upbeat pop numbers. An early cover of Bruce Cockburn's "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" is a fav of mine, as well as "Call and Answer".
I guess I went to a Toronto New Years eve concert at Nathan Phillips Square when they finally got to perform. I also remember Ronny Hawkins was on the line up. They were gracious when they started their set referring to the previous snub!
Don't take these guys too seriously. They certainly don't take themselves too seriously. The band name is the first clue. They have a song called "If I had a Million Dollars", that also gets into silliness in the lyrics.
That's not to say they don't have some really good serious songs. "Call and Answer", "Lovers in a Dangerous Time", "What a Good Boy" are all great ballads.
Everybody remembers the lyric "chickity China the Chinese chicken, you have a drumstick and your brain starts ticking". I love your reaction to this song. And I love that you are doing this time warp back to the 90s! This is my teenage years in music! And they're are so many one hit wonders that we're great but don't get the credit they deserve, but were huge back then.
One of our great Canadian bands, ( they do the theme song for "The Big Bang" T.V. show... they have a lot of great tunes and were such a good band live...
BNL was a blast to see live. No two shows were ever the same. A lot of improv, making up new songs, or new lyrics for old songs. The one they had the most fun with is "If I Had A Million Dollars." All the things they'd buy their loved one if they had a lot of money, you'd never know what they were going to come up with. My feeling is that most of this song came from improvising during live shows. The hook is just a recognition that he knows how he is, and how his loved one is, and when they fight it just takes a certain amount of time to swallow you pride and make up.
"If I had a million dollars" Brilliant fun song. Very clever comedic but talented band. Saw them live and they can do anything. Asked the audience to shout out requests for any song that isn't theirs and they were able to play cover versions at the drop of a hat.
Always glad to see you reacting to Canadian Artists! So maybe great ones! Would love to see your reaction to The Tragically Hip and KD Lang's version of Hallelujah to name a few!
This is one unique band out of Canada! Bare Naked Ladies, could never quite get the cadence of the rap too fast for me,lol. This is the group that is the opening for the t.v. Series "Big Bang". Fun tune! Thanks BP👍❤️
This is from their 4th album, released in 2000. First was released in 1992(Gordon) with "Brian Wilson", "What a Good Boy", and "If I Had $1,000,000", all solid with many other good songs. First wide reaching success here(they are Canadians) was "The Old Apartment" from their 3rd album, Born on a Pirate Ship in 97. Many fun and wonderful songs throughout their career.
These guys were always such a treat to see live. Once upon a time I'd open up a Now Magazine in Toronto and see where the Ladies were playing this weekend, and off we'd go. Even after they got signed and released real albums, they still put on such an incredible live show. Just full of energy, and funny as hell.
Haha!! Yes! I can rap this song word for word! 😆 The basic meaning of this song is pretty much a big fight in a relationship, but it was written as a freestyle, so that's why the lyrics don't really make any sense! Lol Forever a banger, tho! 😁🤘
Okay the song title is, One Week, one part of the song is about a couple who had a simple couples spat. The rest is just the random crap you can experience or think about on a daily basis during the week. The things you get distracted by while you're living life, working, or for example waiting to make up with your partner, after you've both overreacted to something minor.
John Lennon used to write gibberish on purpose because he would get a kick out of all the music writers and fans trying to figure it out what it means when it meant absolutely nothing
I LOVE THIS SONG! Tjhank you for sharing your reaction to this song and for letting us all (you included) laugh and smile a little today! Yes, you need to read the lyrics and listen to more of Barenaked Ladies music. It is all clever and fun!
Im glad you liked this. A lot of people disrespect them, thinking that they are not a sreious band. And you are right. They are incredible live. I've seen them twice and they are some of the best concerts I've seen. I think you mostly got this song. This one is more fun. But people dont realize that a lot of their songs go very deep. This was their breakout hit into major stardom. But their first regular hit in the US (they are Canadian) was If I Had $1,000,000. By the way, if you ever watched the Big Bang Theory, they performed the theme song. Pinch Me would be a great follow up to this. The rapper from this song does the singing. The video is a bit silly and dustracing, but the lyrics are deeper than they seem at first, well worth your reaction. There's a lot more, but I'll start there. I really hope you react more to them. Not many do, and in their time, they deserve the attention. They were my favorite for several years, and i still love them.
Their first hit was "If I had a million dollars" I believe, they also did the Theme song for the Big Band Theory.. I'm not sure if that was an original track that was used or if they made it for the show. They have had a lot of real good ones through the years.. In Canada they are Icons. Canada's R&R HOF, Everybody knows them up here. They are in the same conversation as Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, Tom Chocrane, etc.
"yesterday, you just smiled at me cuz it will still be two days til we say we're sorry". The song is about how longstanding couples have silly fights that last about a week.
I remember the first time I heard this on the radio on the drive to work. I came in the middle of the song somewhere. I was hearing all those food references and the mention of "value" I thought I was hearing an advert for a grocery store. Hahahahaha. But man, I love the song. And ya, BP, it puts a smile on your face. Something we need more of.
These guys are great ... tons of fun ... and even better live. My wife and I went to Ottowa for ... i think it was the 4th of July in 2020 ... did not realize it was also the 175th anniversary of Canada. We stayed at the hotel next to Parliament and just after we arrived there was a free Barenaked Lady's concert on the front lawn. Trip of a lifetime.
Akira Kurosawa is a famous Japanese filmmaker, most known for "Ran," which is a really engaging and understandable subtitle film to watch, well worth it's place on the bucket list. So I take the reference as the guy bragging to the girl when he meets her, just throwing it all at the wall to see what sticks. And then he gets the girl, and it's a week of the stuff that got him there, for better or worse.
I kinda always thought of it as a song about a couple having an argument, and the rap sections are all of the things he’s thinking about/doing to avoid apologizing.
I know absolutely nothing about the Barenaked Ladies except for this song. Never attempted to listen to anything else by them but they absolutely nailed it with this one. Yes, it is a fun song and so many people loved it, danced to it, tried to sing it lyric-by-lyric (especially during the fastest parts) but most of all I saw people laughing and having fun with this song and that's good enough for me.
BNL is among my top 5 concerts EVER, and that includes Pink Floyd. They are so eclectic, and hilarious in concert. They really relate to the people at the show.
You pretty much nailed the song - it's about a couple fighting, waiting to say "I'm sorry," and the random stream of consciousness thoughts the singer has while waiting to apologize. The verses all mean something, but in the context of the song they mean nothing. Follow them up with the songs "Brian Wilson" "Pinch Me" " Old Apartment" or "If I Had a Million Dollars". Of course there is always the "Big Bang Theory" theme song too.
I think the rap part is just a bunch of fun rhymes, and I think the relationship part is about one the games people play when they're in a relationship. The guy does something wrong. He knows she'll be mad at him for a predictable amount of time. Then he'll apologize and she'll forgive him. It's predictable because it's happened before and it will happen again. I think it's just a fun song that doesn't need to be overanalyzed.
You are right. Their live shows were fantastic. I first saw them when they were just starting out. Quite the characters. During "If I had a million dollars" people would throw Kraft dinner onto the stage. See if you can watch a live version.
Back in the mid 80's, the mayor of Toronto banned them performing at Toronto City Hall on Canada Day because naked women would be wrong in a public performance.
You absolutely nailed it, BP, when you said this was probably a really fun band to see live. OMG, what an understatement!! Seeing this band live back in the 90's, especially at one of their infamous New Years Eve parties/concerts, was just absolute 🔥!! In fact, one of the most entertaining bands you could EVER see live back then, in my opinion. Their off-the-wall antics were just non-stop and relentlessly fun! They were not only exceptionally skilled musicians but naturally spontaneous and funny. Man, I miss those times!

"If I had a million dollars" Brilliant fun song. Very clever comedic but talented band. Saw them live and they can do anything. Asked the audience to shout out requests for any song that isn't theirs and they were able to play cover versions at the drop of a hat.
you are right, they are awesome live. I saw them as the opening act at a concert and they stole the show.
Always glad to see you reacting to Canadian Artists! So maybe great ones! Would love to see your reaction to The Tragically Hip and KD Lang's version of Hallelujah to name a few!
Love BNL!!! I’ve seen them live many times and it’s always a blast. They have so much fun at their shows.
They are so fantastic live. Another Postcard is another fun song.
Ahhhh so many great fun songs in the 90s. I’m 65 and most of my top favorite songs are from back then. Great reaction 😁
Have to say I'm impressed, I never could do it!
Man this takes me back to watching the Digimon movie when I was a kid.
Thanks for the Nostalgia hit 😁
Loved this song when it came out and still love it today! The look on your face was priceless! ❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
I have seen them in concert like 3 times. They are great live performers! Took me back to high school for sure.
This is the first time I've listened to this song with headphones. The production is pretty great.
They are a lot of fun live my ex hubby and I took our two boys to see them, kids were like 9 & 11 and it was a great starter concert .
The rap part mostly makes sense. There are a lot of references within the lines that connect to each other.
Our Canadian boys 🫶🏻🇨🇦. You are aware they did the theme song for The Big Bang Theory, ya?
So many iconic things in there. Starsky and Hutch's car, Evel Knievel motorbike jumping, Netflix and chill is in there, so many nods
Barenaked Ladies did the theme song for Big Bang Theory. Also the show used their song Be My Yoko Ono.
I saw them live once and was surprised at how amazing they sound live
Their name was a way to attract audiences when they were starting out.
They did the theme from The Big Bang Theory.
Oh YESSS one of my most ALL time Favorite songs EVER!!! SO freakin FUN!!! YAY
"Absurdity in all life" is what I took away from this song! I love it as well!
They're Canadian, weird, silly and insanely talented. There's no shortage of great songs of theirs to react to.
It's about a young guy in a relationship and he's an idiot in the way he deals with life, we've all been there.
Another great quirky Canadian band! 🇨🇦
Yes! I remember that CD commercial with this song. These guys sung the opening of the show Big Bang Theory.
In the early 90's, the mayor of Toronto tried to prevent this band from playing just due to their name.
I remember that! I'm not from Ontario, I'm in NB but I do remember hearing about that.
I kinda always thought of it as a song about a couple having an argument, and the rap sections are all of the things he’s thinking about/doing to avoid apologizing.
“I’m the type to wear my mind on my sleeve, I have a history of taking off my shirt”
So many references in those lyrics. Harrison Ford is Frantic. Sting is tantric. Hilarious!!
I saw BNL in ‘01 and they were Phenomenal!! Talk about energy 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤ Love my Canadian BNL❤
I got to see these guys live exactly 19 years ago tomorrow. My daughter was with me. Such a great time
You pretty much nailed the song - it's about a couple fighting, waiting to say "I'm sorry," and the random stream of consciousness thoughts the singer has while waiting to apologize.
They're so fun to see live. I did it 5 times
You are right. Their live shows were fantastic. I first saw them when they were just starting out. Quite the characters. During "If I had a million dollars" people would throw Kraft dinner onto the stage. See if you can watch a live version.
The last line of the rap "I have a tendency to wear my heart on my sleeve, inhave a history if losing my shirt" is brilliant
You are absolutely correct. This is a great band to see live. I was able to see them live at UBC Last Day Of Class AMS outdoor concert/party.
Back in the mid 80's, the mayor of Toronto banned them performing at Toronto City Hall on Canada Day because naked women would be wrong in a public performance.
A fun band from Canada, they don't take themselves too seriously. A couple more of their hits are Pinch Me and If I Had A Million Dollars
