DIY Wooden Coaster Sets

- In this video, I show you how I made two DIY wooden coaster sets for a friend. I was at a party one evening and he showed me a set of coasters that the host had, and he asked me if I could make him a similar set, but a little bit larger.
The set that he showed me was a set of square coasters made from bamboo. I told him that it would be easier to make a round set rather than gluing up a lot of small pieces to form a square, so he was expecting me to make set of round coasters.
I surprised him by making a round set and also a square set. The square set is made from some leftover strips of cherry that I already had cut up. The round set is made from walnut and cherry so that the coasters can be stacked with alternating colors.

I wood make the round ones. I have an idea for a less piece oriented square set. May try that some day.
Loving this channel mate & fiddlesticks to the square version, I was tinkering in the workshop today trying to make candle holders and could of done with a helpful hand, your friend was talking French so I hope you understood him lol, keep up the great projects 👍👍👍

Would it have been easier to make the square one the same way as you did the round one and use the square cutting drill bit?
Could you use a mortise drill bit with chisel to create square coasters cut outs instead of gluing? Would it cause tear out? Just curious

Again great work. Lower your blade at time line 0:44 to just a bit higher than the material. Glad to see you using a stop block on the table saw fence.
You're absolutely right about the blade height. I'm usually pretty good with that, but in this case it slipped my mind. I think I get a bit distracted by having to constantly worry about setting up the camera, so it's causing me to sometimes not do things the way I normally would.

The Wood Piddler Yes, I used Titebond III since they may get wet. I only made them yesterday, so I'm not sure how well they will hold up. The round ones should be ok, I think. For the square coasters, I used leftover wood that was thinner than I would have normally used, so they're not as thick as the round coasters and there's not a lot of edge surface for the glue. I'll add a comment in the future if they don't hold up well.
Nicely done, good vid! I have a question. When you face jointed the walnut, you sure seemed to be able to feed the board much faster than I can over my jointer (not sure if the vid was sped up) so I'm wondering if I need a smaller pulley on mine to get more rpm. Is there a recommended rpm for jointers? or is it all relative to what you're feeding? Also, what table saw blade are you using? The name was rubbed off but with red I'm guessing Freud or Diablo, but what kind specifically? glue line rip?
+Phantom Fish Good observation. I had sped up the video 1.5x when running through the jointer (just to keep the video shorter), so you're right that it was feeding pretty fast. I'm not sure of my jointer's RPM, but I believe it's running at 4200 RPM. The table saw blade that I'm using is a Freud Industrial 80 tooth thin-kerf blade. I think it's this one: amzn.to/2ixM8LZ

your drill press table is it your design or did you find in a magizine
I've seen a variety of drill press tables over the years, on UA-cam and in tool catalogs, but this is pretty much something I came up with to meet my needs. I'm sure to have borrowed some of the ideas from others, though.
