    Holy 1.21 gigawatts! That electrical system is impressive…so is the whole camper. You’ve done it the way I like doing things. If you’re gonna do it, do it right! I’m very impressed. I would change a couple things interior wise, but otherwise the whole setup is perfect! Excellent work!

    I have never seen anything like this-even from coach companies. It’s not that you have everything; you seem to have the most efficient version of everything. Nothing is shoehorned in; everything is in its place, and Goldilocks (it’s just right). The design and engineering are nuts. It looks coach-built. I’m sorry, it's BETTER than coach-built. I can’t imagine you sat down and drew this up; the first crack, you got it right. Perfect. Is there anything you would change? Are you a yacht builder by trade? It's an astonishing build. 🤯 Total comfort and economy (space, not $ 😆).Thank you for sharing. Wow. 👀 🙌

    • @HanginwiththeHursts
      @HanginwiththeHursts  Місяць тому +13

      Thanks Danny, I really appreciate your kind words. You are correct I did not come up with this layout the first time. I actually used large cardboard boxes to build walls and make a mockup of what the interior space would be. Some days I would just go and sit in the space and feel it. Then I would move a wall or seat to a better spot. It took a month of design planning to make every thing fit. I am not a builder by trade but to be honest all my life experiences working and building things in my spare time culminated in this build. I am a metal artist and sculptor so those fabrication skills came in to play on this.
      This was my first build and there is LOTS that I would change. I made so many mistakes and learned so many lessons. My wife and I are going to take those lessons and apply them to a bigger platform like a School bus.
      I would have bought a newer more modern ambulance with a more powerful engine. The biggest pain in this living situation is the bed/table area. It sucks to have to take several steps to make your bed when you come home from a 12 hour shift and all you want to do is crash.
      The radiant floor heat definitely needs improvement. I need more loops and more thermal mass over the loops to transmit the heat into the cab.
      I would do a roof raise as I can't stand up in this rig.
      I would install a bigger sink as doing dishes in a shallow bar sink is not the easiest.
      and much more
      Lots of lessons but a very comfortable, livable and enjoyable space.

    That is crazy cool, I've got a 12 volt fan, 5000 btu window air, 2000 watt gen, a little buddy heater in my pop up truck camper. I keep things real simple. I usually never go out in real cold weather. I have solar and altinator charging for fridge and charging my emtb batteries. Super simple, but it works for me. Yours is an engineering marvel, nice job. Oh, my water heater is a gallon sauce pan and a Coleman stove. Shower is a 42 inch inflatable kiddy pool and toilet is a 5 gallon bucket, trash bag, and snap on seat lid and a cup.

    Thanks for the tour and explanation of all the systems you employed to create your project. Moving up to a bus conversion next I see , with the experience you’ve gained from this build will be a larger challenge to create something functional and beautiful. I’m finishing up a 27’ Komfort tt project. Had 1280 watts of solar running through a Victron system almost identical to yours but recently added a mini split so opened up some roof space for 1000 more watts . Swapping out the absorption fridge cooling system for a jc refrigerant 12v system next. Using 2 300 amp hr Enduro Power lifepo batteries for storage. Seems enough so far but it’s evolving. Remodeling the inside now used Palisade Tiles to build shower. Custom shower pan with linear full width drain at base of one wall allows for single sloped floor plain. Used 2 bys 10” on center with 2 layers of 3/4 ply over covered with flex seal for water proofing. Eliminating the need for a mortar bed. The tiles are like vinyl plank flooring but all pvc so much lighter. Just some of my experience to consider.

  • @jmwintenn
    @jmwintenn Місяць тому +1

    word of caution, if they ambulance shell is aluminum make sure that coating specifically states it will work with aluminum. aluminum naturally repels most paints and coatings.it needs special processes to the surface of the aluminum and special paint/coatings. also vinyl wraps wont last more than a year or so before they just bubble off.

    I purchased a 2005 450 Ambulance in 2020. Thank you for sharing, I'm getting so much great information about things to do with it. Unfortunately our Mechanic was supposed to fix a leak that was supposed to be a bad manifold pump. That was 2 years ago, it's still in his shop. I really think he's fallen in love with it and can't bear to part with it. I'm probably going to have to take legal action at this point. Hopefully when I finally get it back I can use some of your ideas to make our Ambo our dream camper.

    You've created a gold-standard build. I'm in love. Seriously, I've been waffling between a cargo trailer and an ambulance. I prefer the simplicity of a single vehicle. Any recommendations on how to find an ambulance suitable for conversion? Thanks!

    • @HanginwiththeHursts
      @HanginwiththeHursts  Місяць тому

      I would just watch government auctions , facebook marketplace and places like that. Research and lean about different motor and transmission combinations. Don’t rush, vehicle selection is the one decision that you only get to make once. I wish I had bought a newer ambulance with a more powerful motor. My wife and I are about to build out a school bus and we won’t make the same mistake twice.

    I subscribed halfway through your first video knowing good things were in store. You did not disappoint! Such a well thought out and executed build!
    What you’ve done here is in line with my own design philosophies re thermals and power- and an ambo is an excellent platform for it, if you can deal with the limited space. I only wish I had known as much as I do now when I first started building my bus a couple of years ago. I started out knowing nothing, with a $100 craftsman tool set lol. Thousands of dollars and many new tools later, getting closer to “done”. It’s been a journey to say the least...
    It’s probably not worth tearing things up to add the radiant heat lines now. Live and learn. Next build will have all of this.
    Do you have a list of components posted anywhere or would you be willing to send one over? I’d super appreciate it. Looking forward to more videos and your next build!

      Thanks. I really don’t know how many btu s. To be honest I made several mistakes that I will correct in my next build.
      1. I need more loops and closer together in the floor.
      2. I need 4” of xps. 2” is just not enough so next time I’ll do a roof raise.
      3. I need to add more thermal mass to the floor so I will install 3/4 subfloor vs 3/8th and I’ll run a denser tile type of surface.

    • @irislavender5889

      @@HanginwiththeHurstsI’ve been researching different types of heaters with mass for inspiration: masonry heaters, rocket mass stoves, sand batteries, etc. Trying to come up with a mass solution that pairs well with floor coolant loops but doesn’t get too crazy with weight. I haven’t decided on a solution, but a roof raise and 4” floor insulation for sure. I have 2” in the floor now and it’s my biggest regret besides no radiant floor heating. Will be cool to see what you come up with.

    This is wonderful! You won me over right away with your Christmas lights! I've only ridden in an ambulance once--after back fusion surgery, L/2-3 to S/1-they brought me home from the hospital. It was a very long ride. I wondered if ambulances lack shock absorbers? Or is the stiff ride you mentioned, so the patient survives a roll-over? Does that affect sleeping in a bed in the back, or relaxing with TV or a book? Either way, this is a fantastic motor home or RV.

    What is your background that enables you to put all of this together? Not for your average person. If you were to create some sort of a Instruction Manual for sale, many people might buy it.

      First of all, thank you for the kind words. I do
      not have a technical background, I am a metal sculpture and an artist I did months and months of research learning the solar and the radiant heat side of this project and spent the better part of two years, finishing it. I guess what got me through was the belief that I could eventually figure out if I work hard enough and research enough. I made a lot of mistakes and I’ll post a video about those mistakes but I think it was a pretty good attempt. I think a lot of people don’t try a project like this because they’re scared they’re gonna fail and they’re scared of the unknown. I guess I just put my head down and press on and believe that one day I can solve the problems in front of me. So maybe it’s just blind ignorance.

      I’ve considered a Patreon account where someone could subscribe and we could work through problems together. Kind of like a subscription service where through Zoom calls and phone calls throughout the month. I could help steer and direct someone in their own project. It’s not a perfect solution, but it’s a start. What’s your thoughts on this

      @HanginwiththeHursts that's cool. The build was well thought-out, so I'm not surprised to hear you calibrated the lights thoughtfully. Some lights one sees on the road are so bright it seems the DOT doesn't really regulate them at all.

    Your ambulance build is phenomenal but I have to say there's something a little eerie about transforming a former ambulance, where people were brought on board to be saved and helped medically during emergencies and obviously there were some that didn't survive, as a means for a home on wheels. I'm just curious about your thoughts on that?

    • @HanginwiththeHursts
      @HanginwiththeHursts  Місяць тому +1

      Thank you. My thoughts are that this vehicle was built and in service as a positive force to help save people in need. If you measure out all the people that it impacted during its service my belief is that it’s a huge net positive. Just like life we can’t control the outcome of all events but we can try to be a force of positivity and help others.
      If you really want to get philosophical about the subject, I feel that most easily inhibited land on earth has had a human or one of its ancestors die in most areas. So we are never far from a place where death has occurred. Death is a natural part of life and we will all be there some day. It doesn’t not concern me at all.
