Dame Judi is a superstar. She goes on holiday to the same place as my extended family every year. When the teenage girls from our group came across her having a cup of tea on the terrace of the local restaurant, she was gracious enough to allow them to take a photo with her. Just watched this film today at the Toronto International Film Festival. I'm always a sucker for a good coming-of-age story, but this one was by far one of the best I've seen. It's an artistic film that really immereses you in the perspective of the boy (outstanding performance by the young Jude Hill) as he struggles to navigate both conflict within his family and that of the early years of the Troubles. Kenneth Branagh was actually here for a talk-back afterwards and I could really feel that it was a very personal project for him, inspired by his own childhood experiences. The film also has a uniquely haunting soundtrack brilliantly balanced with bits of humour. The choice to present it in black and white was also an excellent move by Branagh. Outstanding performances all around, but Catriona Balfe's in particular stood out. Wanted to rewatch it as soon as I left the auditorium. Much more to dissect!
Can I ask about your background? Did you have a knowledge of Belfast and the Troubles before you saw this film? I'm keen to know how International audiences will respond to the accents, the storyline and the history of NI.
@@brendanfisher No, I didn't really know much about the Troubles prior to seeing the film. For others who have lived through the Troubles, it might be a different experience watching it, but for me, the heart of the film was the personal and familial struggles at being uprooted from home. I myself was an immigrant as a child and really identified with those aspects of the story. It was also just very beautifully written and shot. I'm also just a really big fan of Sir Ken. But as a cinephile I do love learning about different cultures and periods through film. The audience at my screening was also really enthusiastic and responsive. I know some initial reviews from the US said there should have been subtitles because of the unintelligibility of the NI accent, but I used to dabble in acting and had practiced a bunch of different accents so the NI dialect wasn't a problem for me to understand. Why do they persist in getting actors who haven't got a Belfast accent to do Northern Ireland films, it just sounds so stupid, and another thing Belfast never was as clean as that ever, it was a dirty hole back then
Kenneth Branagh was born in Belfast and lived there until he was 9. His family were Protestants and they moved to England in 1969 when things got real bad in the North. Based on this trailer, this is not only a personal story, but a semi autobiographical one. Looking forward to seeing it
I’m fortunate enough to have grown up in Belfast post-peace process, and I showed this trailer to my mother who was usually very skeptical when it came to movies about the troubles- she said it’s like they’ve taken the memories in her head and put them onto film. Seriously, even if you’re not from Belfast; you’re not going to want to miss this. At least it’s not got Brad Pitt in it this time!
Aye Jack, I can agree with your Mam. The troubles that started in 69 saw many killed on both sides. Before I came to Australia I had a friend in Belfast I went to see in early 1971 before I left for Australia.. We were walking and talking and I was just covered in his blood. we were 12 yrs old. Caitriona Balfe from Outlander and Jamie Dornan from FSOG, a random but not so random pairing since they're both Irish. But damn, they're a pair I didn't know I needed. Two of my favorite shows and movies ever. 😍
@@kennethcharlesbranagh7048 I can feel the passion in this movie and it is only a two minute trailer. Congratulations! I wish you every success and I really hope to see it in Greece as well.
This story about growing up amid the onset of The Troubles should be more emotionally and politically potent than it is. Instead, it’s a careful, uncontroversial (and thereby unremarkable) film that fails to exert any lasting impact after the credits roll.
Never judge an actor because of a horrendous trilogy that didn't do his talent any justice. He has done other movies that i truly liked, the man can be great in acting if he was given a better material to work with, is that simple

They're even both produced and distributed by Focus Features!
I found the movie kinda slow. Also, I don't have roots in either the UK or Ireland, but this seems very biased and doesn't really get into the background of the conflict. It makes the Catholics seem like 100% victims while there is nothing about IRA terrorism in this movie at all.
@@taintabird23 Catholics are no victims in Northern Ireland lmao. Everyone has their fair share of slander but it's very much equal from both sides. No one is more victim than the other.

@@ButterflyAngel008 Making movies is a business as well as entertainment. What a the point in making movies that ppl won't go and see because they can't understand what's being said? I have no trouble understanding most accents but understand some ppl find it difficult. Irish accents aren't the only accents toned down. Northern English and Scottish accents often made a little less difficult. Nobody wants to watch movies with subtitles. Its so distracting. There has to be a middle ground surely so everybody who wants to watch a movie can enjoy it?
i'm here for Colin Morgan nothing else
Jamie Dornan singing Everlasting Love will be the death of me
Omg is that Colin???? From Merlin????
This just sent my hype for this sky rocketing. I can see this being a serious Awards Contender with Acting Noms for Balfe, Dench, Dornan, Hinds. This looks great and I can't wait. "If they can't understand you then they're not listening" I'm crying wayyyyyy too hard at that line. Kenneth Branagh looks to have delivered another great film. Bring on Nov. 12th.
Looks fantastic. Jamie Dornan finally got the right role.
I know one of the actors personally, Jude hill
Indeed.
Im gutted. Like its a 76 in Metacritic but if its in the same vein as Green Book and Billy Eliott (which had more or less the same rating), then i am in! Go! Sucks that a good film is rated by numbers.
@@morrisoniice Agree about the ratings. But metacritic gave that Barb and Star Vista Del Mar thingy a 64! I know it's a completely different genre and shouldn't be compared, but if that movie is viewed just 12 points below Belfast, critic's opinion is not only questionable, but dowright incomprehensible. I'm hoping for the numbers that will count in the longrun and that's box office and/or oscar nominations. I've got fingers crossed for both.
Watched Belfast last night. Hands down one of the greatest movies I've ever seen. So powerful.
This movie got great reviews at The TELLURIDE Film festival so it will definitely be up for nominations come award season....
It was not released in Venice Film Festival.
Looking forward to seeing it
It sounds as if it cud b a one sided with
It sounds as if it cud b a one sided movie with prodestant branagh and prodestant van Morrison doing the music I think I will give it a miss
@davidbroadley126 it's not one sided at all. And what the hell has van morrison's religion got to do with anything?
wow, i think Belfast will get a lot of Osar Nominations, and it's winning me with the cinematography at 1st place !
Post peace process...you're a kid Jack and I mean that in the best way I have children your age.
It is very sad. I want to watch the movie, but I will wait for the DVD as I know I will cry.
@@jamesmackay7534 Grown man in America here, Jack. Your post just brought me to tears. No shame in crying in the theater, my friend. You won't be alone.
Thank you for showing the trailer of BELFAST. I am looking forward to seeing Jamie Dornan's new movie BELFAST and I know Jamie will be good in this movie, Jamie is The Most Talented, Amazing, Gifted & Great Actor.
Congrats on winning the TIFF People's Choice Audience Award! Can't wait for November 12.
This theme tune was my own ....when I left my home in Britain, 1967, to travel the world, working. This promises to be the most exciting film of the year. Love Caitriona Balfe, my favourite, along with those other great actors. Wow! Cannot wait to see this one.
I went to see this movie yesterday and ended up spending $9 to sit through a U2 music video 🤷♂️
Overrated af!!
Kenneth Branagh won an Oscar for his script in this beautiful movie. Congrats to him 🙌🙌
I am waiting for the premiere in the Netherlands! I wonder why only Amsterdam? Not e.g. Vlaardingen🤔😁
The trailer looks amazing and I can't wait to watch Belfast
Bot
I cried this whole movie through😢😢😢😢very heartwarming film
My mom left the Belfast area in the early '70s for Canada under cover of night on account of her dad being targeted by the IRA. Weirdly similar story lol I'm sure she's gonna love this movie! Too bad her parents ain't around for it... My grandmother cried her eyes out at Brooklyn XD
Caitriona Balfe from Outlander and Jamie Dornan from FSOG, a random but not so random pairing since they're both Irish. But damn, they're a pair I didn't know I needed. Two of my favorite shows and movies ever. 😍
OMG! It looks so good! I love it! I hope distributors give wide release to this so we can enjoy it in Greece too.
I’m honored to have you as a fan, thanks for being here all this while, much love ❤️
@@kennethcharlesbranagh7048 I can feel the passion in this movie and it is only a two minute trailer. Congratulations! I wish you every success and I really hope to see it in Greece as well.
@@katerinabunny4047 that’s good, I really appreciate your love and support and I wish you and your family have a wonderful time
Cut right to my heart. As a South African, I understood the enormously difficult decision about leaving the country you love.
BELFAST=Caitriona Balfe ♥️
This story about growing up amid the onset of The Troubles should be more emotionally and politically potent than it is. Instead, it’s a careful, uncontroversial (and thereby unremarkable) film that fails to exert any lasting impact after the credits roll.
This movie seems exciting and I hope Branagh does a great job in this movie and it’s one of my most anticipated of November 🙏
I have been married to your granny for 50-years. I still don't understand a single word she says.
Im excited for Jamie! Hope that this film can help people to understand that he's capable of acting
Right🙏
You should see him in Jadotville his best movie!
I thought he was great in “The Fall” the series with Gillian Anderson.
Never judge an actor because of a horrendous trilogy that didn't do his talent any justice. He has done other movies that i truly liked, the man can be great in acting if he was given a better material to work with, is that simple
As someone who was born in Belfast, and would occasionally visit there during the weekends, this makes me hyped to see the film!
My Mom was raised on the Falls Road, Belfast. A historic Irish hold out. Generations back are from Ireland. She was 15 at this period film and Moved here at 30. She is 94 now. I can't wait to take her. I am crying at the trailer to see, feel how it was for her. :-''''(. One Ireland!
Unfortunately being partially sighted and this being in black and white, means I can't watch it because I can't see it.
I am here for Catriona, but even without her this looks amazing. Love how film is bringing back the 60's.
4K black and white just doesn’t work
I think have our Best Cinematography winner right here
This, "Dune" or "The Tragedy of Macbeth".
One of the greatest movies of all time
Jude Hill is amazing
Dornan..😍😍
Please please please watch this fantastic film. It funny, emotional, nostalgic and beautifully made.
❤️❤️
Jamie singing 😍
they literally showed the entire arc of the movie in this teaser...smh
Just saw the movie tonight. Great movie about community, family and the tough tough decisions all immigrant's have to make when it is time to leave!!! Great movie, great cast!!
Just a film I want to see succeed
I am so so happy to see Colin Morgan making his appearance in this!!! I love his acting but we don't get to see him often. Love for the Cait as well. She is such a talented actress. Love her in the Outlander and this looks amazing!!
Amazing, only found out about this now and I bloody live in Belfast.
Love the fact Dame Judi Dench is in it. My mum would've loved this lol
In the same year my hometown gets a movie titled after its namesake, "Stillwater", starring Matt Damon, set in and named after Stillwater, Okla., another movie comes out about my other "hometown" I've been taking up residence in the past few years, "Belfast", from Branagh; CRAZY! They're even both produced and distributed by Focus Features!
I found the movie kinda slow. Also, I don't have roots in either the UK or Ireland, but this seems very biased and doesn't really get into the background of the conflict. It makes the Catholics seem like 100% victims while there is nothing about IRA terrorism in this movie at all.
in 1969 the Catholics WERE the victims. The British Army was sent in to protect them from the Protestants.
@@taintabird23 Catholics are no victims in Northern Ireland lmao. Everyone has their fair share of slander but it's very much equal from both sides. No one is more victim than the other.
@@kellyrobinson6752 Read my post again.
@@taintabird23 I did. You said in 1969 the catholics WERE the victims. The IRA in the 1960's+ were catholic which were the bunch of scumbags killing innocent protestants so what do you want me to re-read exactly? They were not the victims at that time.
@@kellyrobinson6752 Yeah, we all heard that: evidence free opinion before.
The British army were sent to NI in 1969 to protect Catholics from Protestants.
Belfast. My roots are here. Although I was born in Dublin, my granny, great grandad, and on back as far as we can trace is ulster and Belfast. ❤️
Brilliant so excited and cannot wait to see the whole movie. Legendary Jamie Dornan beautiful Caitriona omg love all of them. 👏👏👏
Can’t wait to see this movie, It looks Amazing!
🇮🇪 🇮🇪 🇮🇪 Love Belfast! What a place! 🇮🇪 🇮🇪 🇮🇪
That one second clip at the start of Caitriona Balfe dancing has me mesmerized.
Kenneth Branagh is not only a great actor but such an underrated director too, and Im glad he’s starting to get the recognition as a top filmmaker that he deserves.
Can’t wait for this, it looks beautiful.
I hope this is a good bounce back from Artemis Fowl.
Couldn’t have said it better myself!!!
I love his ‘Cinderella’ so much!
Artemis Fowl was garbage but I would give him a pass for that because he directed other great movies such as Cinderella, Thor, Murder On The Orient Express, and Hamlet. He's an underrated director and surprisingly he made one of, if not the best Disney live action adaptation movie ever and my personal favourite. Gotta thank Branagh for that
This movie has gone straight into my top 10 movie list of all time, I absolutely loved it. It is biological! 😃😃
I went to see this in the theater part of a movie club and could not look at the screen after the opening shot. I am sorry. I was overwhelmed by the over the top production.
I just can't wait to see Caitriona and Colin. 😍
Cant wait to see Queen Balfe in this movie 😍😍 great casting

I'll support Belfast for Oscar. I loved the movie!
Absolutely stunning 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I need to see this film. Sending love to Belfast.
omg, everything was perfect from the beginning and when Jamie Dornan sings and dance OMG it takes me to the peak. So many emotions and so many strength in the trailer. Cant wait to see from Asia not sure when is it gonna be available to rent or purchase.
And thanks to every director who makes Jamie Dornan sing. He is a great singer and performer. so excited.
OMG this looks so good! I can’t wait! 💕
Return to the Steve Ellis classic ... Everlasting Love. Good choice of music....
I’m honored to have you as a fan, thanks for being here all this while, much love ❤️ ❤️
How long have you been a fan?
There are 98 thumbs down? Really? Someone is easily offended.
Another fantastic performance from Jamie Dornan. He was outstanding in “Wild Mountain Thyme” with Emily Blunt (also filmed in Ireland). When he is in familiar territory, Jamie needs no script; he is himself (“Touch my family, I’ll kill youe “. November 12 cannot come fast enough.
I’m honored to have you as a fan, thanks for being here all this while, much love ❤️
I just saw the Belfast in Bilbao. I follow Kenneth since Henry V. I loved the film, the story, the actors, the LOVE you can feel all the time in spite the violence. He shows us how people loved and cared for each other in spite of the problems. Beautiful and mooving, full of humor and sensibility. I strongly recomend this film
I love you Jamie 💖
