  • The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was an American long-range single-seat fighter aircraft that entered service with Allied air forces in the middle years of World War II. The P-51 became an icon and one of the war's most successful and recognizable aircraft.

    I love to see the stars involved in aviation, it's a hobby that transcends earthly problems, and allows a certain freedom no matter who you are on the ground.
    Like Harrison Ford says, "You are just another pilot with another tail #"

    That's easy to say. Hangar costs alone cost about @6000.00 per year, so imagine what it would cost for 70years of hangar time. Then there's maintenance, certification, and on and on!

    One of the few things you have to be careful with on the Mustang, is to not firewall it down the runway and lift off, WITHOUT some opposite rudder. That much power and torque they have a knack of wanting to roll a bit when wheels lift off.

    Just FYI: The TF-51D is the two-seat version of the Mustang. It is not a trainer, it was a remanufactured war surplus P-51 that was updated and refitted for sale for foreign air forces. It actually has a aerodynamic improvements and slightly improved engine over the original P-51, and they sell for a similar amount; about $2million.

    • @nunyabusiness896

      It’s still a trainer, that’s what the “T” means. Even if used for combat, it is a trainer plane. Still better because you can bring a passenger up.

I think anyone with a feiling for flying and the beauty of a bird like the Mustang has right to want one forthem selfs. And a few lucky ones actually buy one! What a dream! It's not a suprice he got one. He did play Maveric in the TOPGUN Movie, He obiesly got cauht in the feling of a warbird. He probebly couldent get a TOMCAT ;) So he went for the next best! The mustang, erfekt sense!

    I'm no fan of Tom Cruise (or his religion), but he has been flying for about 15 years now. This is his second P-51, a former F6 recon model, that has had the rear seat conversion for passengers, or for a check pilot. Formerly the Montana Miss, he had it changed to Kiss Me Kate in 2006. It's maintained at Valhalla Aviation, and yes, he has been know to take quite a few people up.

    @rustyATV I can confirm that it is in fact an original P-51 used during WWII, and not a remanufactured aircraft. I don't remember the exact details, but it was only used towards the end of the war, and it was used for reconnaissance or something like that, rather than as a fighter. Maybe that info might help you to determine the correct model number. I wish I could remember if it had an Allison or a Merlin, but it was so long ago I just don't remember.

    • @vincentwade1
      @vincentwade1 4 роки тому

      If it has a cooling duct scoop on top of the engine cowling just behind the prop, it's an Allison. If it has no scoop, it's a Merlin

    @v12tommy 14 років тому

    @elijah5674 I can't go into details, but I can personally vouch for the fact that he has owned it since at least 2003. Of course it wasn't the "Kiss me kate" back then as he wasn't married. It isn't the P-51D model but a later model either the P-51K or P-51H. Obviously I haven't seen it in half a decade, but when I did see it, it was by far the cleanest example of a P-51 I have ever seen. I wasn't allowed to take pictures, but I wish I had pictures of the internal wing structure...gorgeous!!

  • @rustyATV

    @v12tommy That may very well be. To remanufacture something means to refurbish by renovating and reassembling, in this case, starting with an existing airframe and rebuilding it. All of the Cavalier Mustangs started as military surplus. Go search Cavalier Mustang on Wikipedia. Cavalier even attempted a turboprop offshoot. And I may be wrong about the H model; I found recent pictures of one flying, though the one in this video is clearly not an H as they are very noticeably different.

    @jollyrogger51 That is a P-51 with controls in the rear for the instructor! They were used to train pilots after they moved up from the AT6. You can't take friends up for a joy ride, till you have been certified by the FAA. which means you have been checked out in this airframe type, and can solo it.
    Next time do your research!

    Considering the massive amount of Mustangs still flyable today (plus a bit more being added from time to time) and that because of that the P-51 is a bit "devaluated" in the market of warbirds (good an interceptor as it has always been, I admit it) I wouldn´t be surprised if that plane cost Tom no more than 3$...
    A Mustang; how original... The easiest-to get WWII warbird beside the Spitfire (which I like better, though) and probably the F4U Corsair as well. I find the P-51 even in my soup!
