John Singleton really made this movie when he was in his early to mid 20s. And at the time, the youngest person to be nominated at the Oscars for I believe Best Director.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity of meeting John Singleton twice. The first time, I was working at a Starbucks in Downtown Brooklyn. I was a film student at the time and he came into the store with like 5 others because they were scouting for Shaft. I served him his coffee and told him I was a film student and he just ignored me. I’ll admit I was kinda bitter. I was like I’m gonna show him one day!
16 years later after I had moved to LA and making my way in the film industry I had the opportunity to work on season 1 of “Snowfall” (his first and only tv series) and had the opportunity to talk to him several times. But it wasn’t until the Open bar Wrap party, that I had the courage to remind him about our first meeting. I caught him alone, and full of liquid courage, told him about how he dissed me when I was a college film student, and said something like “look at me now!” 😂. He really didn’t catch my sentiment, and instead was obsessed w/ trying to remember the movie he was scouting when I met him. 😂Ultimately, I can honestly say he wasn’t dissing me that first OR second time. He was just a very awkward guy, and I miss took his awkwardness for disrespect.
However, I was able to work on his show because he made a mandate, that he wanted as many crew positions as possible, to be filled by people of color. RIP John.

Ricky and Doughboy's mom treated them the way she did more than likely because they had different fathers. And the mom was probably still in love with Ricky's father and hated Doughboy's father, who probably mistreated her, plus on top of that he'd abandoned her to raise him alone, which IMO would explain why she treated them the way she did. Doughboy saw the favoritism their mother had for Ricky and naturally he resented him for it, but he loved Ricky and his mother at the same time. That was sad to watch.
I was 23 when the movie came out. It's still sad to see Ricky get killed at the end of the movie. Oh, and by the way, you said you've seen Morris Chestnut older; try watching The Best Man (1999) and its sequel The Best Man Holiday (2013). You've probably seen him from the 2013 sequel. Among the best things I love about Boyz n The Hood is Doughboy for his character and story development and Ice Cube’s performance in the role.
Cube at the time was among the emerging hip-hopers in the 90s with his debut solo album AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted after leaving NWA.
The guy may not have had attended drama class in school, never did a film, never did a TV show or a stage show but it was the encouragement from John Singleton due to their friendship that convinced Cube to get the part of Doughboy.
John Singleton met Ice Cube when he was a member of backstage crew at the Arsenio Hall Show and even though Cube turned down the offer a couple times, I’m beyond glad he accepted the offer.
For an inexperienced actor in a cinematic debut, Ice Cube did an awesome job playing Doughboy. He played the role as if he (Cube himself) never had a dad, is the subject of ridicule and verbal abuse by his mum who favours a brother of his and ends up as as a Rollin 60s Crip. He did it so damn convincingly that he should’ve got an Oscar, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe - all three for “Best Supporting Actor” and MTV Movie Award for “Best Breakthrough Performance”.
This was long before Cube did the Friday films (film series he also wrote/produced), Are We There Yet?, xXx 2 and 3, Fist Fight, Ride Along, 21/22 Jump Street, Ghost of Mars, the Barbershop films, Rampart, Tresspass etc
If the Marc Webb-directed and Andrew Garfield-starred Amazing Spider-Man films were to conclude with a 3rd film (a 4 hour 3rd film to end the story) and if Ice Cube appeared in it - he would’ve been J Jonah Jameson (Daily Bugle newspaper boss). Imagine Andrew Garfield and Ice Cube in the same room! Wasted/missed opportunity in my opinion.

24:10 it’s not meant for you to remember what he said because the situation represents the senselessness of the violence in the hood.

That scene where they bring him home is a masterpiece. EVERYONE (including even the baby) killed that one! Ate the scenery up.
    Great movie

I remember St. Ides and Old English. I used drink that crap Old English tasted like s@$&, St Ides tasted a little better but not by much. But this is the Godfather of Hood movies. Me and my friends watched this and Meanace To Society. The middle part and ending is really sad.

An Unfortunate observation is that I’ve seen ALOT of people who didn’t grow up in the “hood” actually Cry after Ricky death scene….. 🤦🏾‍♂️ and as a kid coming from that environment it was so normal I just never thought to cry on that part. It’s a SAD scene compared to majority of deaths actually portrayed on film, yet I still feel nothing. I’ve actually watched this movie close to a thousand times too. Still nothing. This environment ruined my heart . And I had NO choice because I didn’t ask to be born here

I just subscribed to this channel. This movie is the quintessential hood classic. This was the first coming of age movie i first saw this in theaters at the age of 10 years old while i was visiting family in Fresno, California. Rewatching this as an adult i realize that Ricky wasn’t street smart due to him being coddled by his mother. He laughed at Trey when Trey told him that he was afraid to have sex, he was scared when Furious took them to Compton & he didn’t take Ferris & his crew serious when they coming for him. Brenda favoritism towards Ricky did more damage to Doughboy than the hood ever did & Brenda lost both of her sons as a result of her favoritism. Even though Doughboy was painted as the black sheep he was a good big brother. No matter how much him & Ricky fought he always had Ricky’s back & knew that his mom was the problem not Ricky. Doughboy also had more sense than Ricky. He was smart, always aware what was going on, reading & taking steps to stay out of jail. Fun Facts: Will Smith was offered the role of Trey but declined due to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The kid who played little Doughboy is now a successful chef. Sad facts: The guy in the red hat was also in Poetic Justice. He began living out the roles he played, he got arrested for murder & was killed in prison by his cell mate. The guy who sucked on the pacifier was killed at a drag race & the guy who gave Ricky is football back was killed in a car accident. The girl who called Doughboy a bitch was in Ice Cube’s Today Was A Good Day video.
Please react to the following movies:
    Cooley High
    New Jack City
    South Central
    Fresh
    New Jersey Drive
    Roll Bounce
    ATL
    Dope

The mom didn’t think Doughboy killed Ricky, she blamed him because of all the trouble he gets into. She feels like he’s the cause of Ricky getting killed.
