lol I ain’t gonna lie a few years ago I bought my son the 1022 and took him to the range with it and none of us could figure out how to get the bolt to lock back for safety check including the range master. Figured I needed to get it fixed even the gun shop guy didn’t know. So in my experience a lot of people didn’t know about this lol.
Yup! I just reviewed my 10/22 manual on page 16 and it does not clearly explain what you just explained to do. Just push it once while holding the bolt open and it shuts easily. Was driving me crazy until I watched your video. Thank you.
Holy shit thank you! I hate this feature but finally know how to unlock it. I’m still going to buy a volquartsen replacement so you just have to pull back and release.
Mr. Tradition, first thing is I’ve owned 10/22 for sometime now and don’t remember having a issue!!! I just bought a beautiful 1022 take down and installed the magpul back packer… as I’m going through my functions check that bolt lock was giving me one hell of a time… your video explained exactly what I was doing wrong..thanks for posting your info as it definitely saved me a trip back to the gun store.. just push it once, I was holding it in. Thanks again!! Tc from Nevada
I bought my 10/22 3 days ago and had been struggling with this! Turns out I was holding the lever up while trying to release the bolt. Thanks to your vid the problem is solved! Click, release, then release the charging handle. Problem solved! Thanks!!!
Thanks for addressing a very simple operation. Most 10/22 owners (like me) already know this, but it’s nice to see you are not ‘above’ explaining simple concepts. BTW, Thompson Center makes a Ruger clone that DOES have last round hold open, but it only works with their mags.
In the gun community, we have an issue where we expect everything we know to be common knowledge. Often times, other shooters and even instructors belittle folks wo aren't familiar with what they'd consider "the basics". The three rules for an instructor: don't yell at new shooters, don't shame new shooters, and explain every single detail.
I actually locked mine today and forgot how to unlock it. I always mod mine for quick release but neglected to do this on one particular gun. I actually hate the factory ones for these guns. Thanks for the video brother.
Appreciate the video. I just purchased a 1022 and couldn’t figure out how to get the bolt forward. Nearly took it apart moments before finding this video. Great job
I think probably you discovered this years after owning the rifle I don't know anyone that doesn't already know about this, these are Ruger 10/22 fundamentals even before shooting it you should know this
I'm 62-years-old and a former 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper and I just kicked a trash can at the range today because I had this very problem shooting my newly purchased (used) 10/22. That would explain why I'm commenting on this thread to thank @Gun Tradition for making this video! Damn. There goes my claim to being a Mr. Know-It-All.---🙄🤔--🤣
Is that the after market part that they sell with the Bullpup build? I just installed one and couldn't figure out why the bolt didn't hold open anymore. 😅
I bought a grey birch 10/22 used and did not have a manual and have never fired a 10/22 before. I have a savage A22 and the bolt release works just by pulling back on the bolt handle. So I thought that the 10/22 would work the same. When I pulled back on the bolt and it never released I was like " Damn this second hand gun is not working properly". Fortunately, I figured this out before taking it to the range. After doing so YT research I was releaved to discover that this is how it is suppose to work. I ordered a auto bolt release on Amazon which will allow the bolt release to work by just pulling back on the bolt handle. You can also modify the stock bolt to auto release, but I prefer not to mess around with the orginal parts.
Yeap! It’s been so long that I shot my 10/22, that I forgot how to release the bolt lock. And yes, I felt like a dummy when I couldn’t shoot the gun. Thanks for the video!
I'm a Marlin model 60 man myself and my 2 brothers have 10/22's and I love watching them shoot and hear the click on an empty mag......My Marlin model 60 has had LSHO since 1985......Such a very simple thing to add to an action that is really nice to have and goofball Ruger still hasn't figured this out since 1964.
My first and favorite rifle, but that little bolt lock used to drive me crazy, and I eventually replaced it with a Volquartsen auto bolt release, so now I can just rack it like any other semi-auto.
My gripe is that it isn't intuitive to operate. If you are not familiar with it and need a gun in a pinch, you might have an issue trying to rack in a bullet.
I just did the mod earlier after seeing this was a thing! I just got my 10/22 a few months ago. As soon as I learned that I could drop the bolt like my Savage A22 I jumped on it! I just filed the bolt release/lock plate and Voila`, I can now drop it w/o messing with the release tab.
Thanks, but I am not an idiot. I know how to lock and unlock my bolt. I have had the same 10/22 for 15 years. My bolt will no longer always release after I push in the lock. Sometimes yes, mostly no
Yeah, counting each round is no fun especially with a fully charged BX-25 mag - lol. The 10/22 has an available auto bolt release that saves a step on releasing a locked open bolt. Easy to install and inexpensive. To lock open: Pull back bolt, pull the doo-hickey, bolt locked open. To release: pull bolt back, release, bolt closes (all with no doo-hickey involvement!)
Did this man just entertain the idea of having the designated HD weapon be a 10 round .22LR? Like I guess if it's an absolute last resort, fine. Why strive for failure?
Lol great video..but..I knew that was the bolt release...just did not know that you just push it one time..I have to fight that thing like crazy in the past years...lol. thanks for the Info...BTW...does it say that In the owners manual?....lol
I'd watch the condescension in my voice for future videos if I were you - it's not going to win over new viewers. With that said, this was the first and only video I found that pinpointed the correct release of the action with a single press of the button. Press once, release, pull back bolt and release bolt. Wah-Lah - simple. Others got it wrong, and advised to hold the button down while releasing the bolt. That is actually very intuitive - but also very wrong. This is reason two why you find a lot of people getting confused about this feature, and some even being convinced that their rifle is defective. Go easy on them - they've been misinformed before they got to you.
just cleaned my gun , first rifle ive owned. probably shot 120 rounds with my kids. i did end up removing the trigger assembly and putting it back together with the help of some fine people on yt. now i cant get my 10 mag back into the rifle. the little piece of shit metal is sticking out and wont let my magazine just click into place. Im Canadian btw .. not as expert as you fine Americans concerning guns n ammo. Any help.will be great or else back to Cabelas I go to a gunsmith. Thanks!!!
You should do a video about the safety. Show how to put it on safe and fire. Maybe make a video about the rear sight folding down and another video about how to take the magazine out of the gun. It would be great to see an entire series of stupid shit people already know about the gun.
Get an aftermarket auto bolt release. It's a drop in mod and costs about $12. BTW: I am working on a video on how to tie your shoe laces. Spoiler alert: Never tie the laces together from one shoe to the other or you will trip and fall down the stairs.
lol I ain’t gonna lie a few years ago I bought my son the 1022 and took him to the range with it and none of us could figure out how to get the bolt to lock back for safety check including the range master. I'm another one of those guys😀.
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for posting this video, you explained and fixed the exact issue I was having.

Holy shit thank you! I hate this feature but finally know how to unlock it. I’m still going to buy a volquartsen replacement so you just have to pull back and release.
Its a 1 hand (2) finger operation. Pull back with ur thumb, and use ur middle finger the operate the bolt open/closed.

It's one of those issues a lot of folks encounter, but are too embarrassed to admit it. And to be fair, it seems like you should have to hold it.
@@GunTradition nice quick response , I like that, much appreciated . U Saved me, big time.. I love this UTube thing Tc from Nevada

Thanks, I ran into this problem and your video helped me. 👍🏻
Thank you. Got one of these to shoot with my son and i had no idea about the lock!!!!! Great information!!
Glad I could help out.
I actually locked mine today and forgot how to unlock it. I always mod mine for quick release but neglected to do this on one particular gun. I actually hate the factory ones for these guns. Thanks for the video brother.
Thank you thank you, I’m new to this rifle love it
Appreciate the video. I just purchased a 1022 and couldn’t figure out how to get the bolt forward. Nearly took it apart moments before finding this video. Great job
More guy have done that than are willing to admit it.
Thought I needed a repair. Great Explanation, Thank you
I appreciate what you talked about. It was big help.
I think probably you discovered this years after owning the rifle I don't know anyone that doesn't already know about this, these are Ruger 10/22 fundamentals even before shooting it you should know this
You'd be surprised how many guys at the range with their 10/22 haven't read the manual.
I'm 62-years-old and a former 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper and I just kicked a trash can at the range today because I had this very problem shooting my newly purchased (used) 10/22.

Yeah, I agree Jason.
Thanks. It works just like you described. 🇺🇸
Ok, you have to HOLD that button when locking. And PUSH it fast, once, when unlocking.
Awesome video. Thank you so much for that.
Thanks. I just got one today... Playing around here in the house taking the mag in and out seems a but... weird. Lol.
Thanks for this! I was almost ready to take this to a gun smith 😊
Thanks! Just got mine and was looking for a way to do this.
I struggled with unlocking that for years would always get it but it would take 50 tries thank you
Thank you ,this was helpful.
Cool thank you, I bought a 10/22 kind of recently and was wondering what I would do if I went to a range that had a range master.
Jeez I’m so embarrassed. Thanks for getting my bolt closed
thanks, just what i needed
Just what I needed!
EXCELLENT VIDEO!
great video !
This guys going to be mind blown when he discovers auto bolt releases for the 10/22 lol
Is that the after market part that they sell with the Bullpup build? I just installed one and couldn't figure out why the bolt didn't hold open anymore. 😅
Great video
I've been fighting this for an hour.
It happens.
Thank you so much!
Very helpful!

It’s specifies in the manual for better accuracy to do this three times prior to firing. It is very difficult and counterintuitive
Yeap! It’s been so long that I shot my 10/22, that I forgot how to release the bolt lock. And yes, I felt like a dummy when I couldn’t shoot the gun. Thanks for the video!
Same here, the other week!
👌
Thank you.
very helpful i forgot how to do this
Better yet, get the Volquartsen piece that prevents having to use that dumb button!!
I'm glad to know that dry firing doesn't hurt the rifle because that was my primary concern when shooting.
Idk about that claim. They say never dry fire a 22lr
@@jason200912Ruger says it's fine.
Yes. This works!!
It's even funnier watching somebody try to remove the 10 round magazine when they don't know how.
There certainly are alot of propriety designs in the 10/22.
Thank you

You didn't even need to replace it. It takes 2 minutes of dremmelling to mod the bolt lock.
Brother good video I didn't know that geez I was doing it the hard way with the Snake
That makes two of us.
Bloody he'll mate every one who has a ruger 10/22 knows this !!!!
Not according to the comments.
Or you could just change the bolt lock to an after market one that releases the bolt when you pull the bolt back and release it.
Never thought about using it as a way to keep small children from accidental shootings
Thanks!
Sure thing.
Just do the mod! Either buy the after market part or file the part down . Plenty of vids on how to do the auto release.
Will it hurt the springs if you leave it open for storage
That it might. All the old timers keep the bolt open when in storage.
Thanks, but I am not an idiot. I know how to lock and unlock my bolt. I have had the same 10/22 for 15 years. My bolt will no longer always release after I push in the lock. Sometimes yes, mostly no
I want the takedown version of this rifle. Thanks for the info on the bolt.
The takedown model is a handy little rifle.
great info.i need to read the manual, lol. now after watching your video, naw, lol.
Glad I could help

Get a gsg 1022 110 rd mag. Very fun staff. Just make sure to rotate the bullet lever thing before inserting on a fully loaded drum.
Maaa! Where’s my meatloaf???
Just experienced this very thing. Duh! Thought my gun was in need of repair.
Mine don’t have that
THANK YOU! ffs...
Did this man just entertain the idea of having the designated HD weapon be a 10 round .22LR? Like I guess if it's an absolute last resort, fine. Why strive for failure?

It's in the manual, but in an unclear way.
Damn. I was holding the lock and then pushing then shoving the bolt forward. Big dumb.

Don't underestimate how many people need you to hold their hand a little at first.
I have a hard time believe there is anyone out there that doesnt know what that is for?
Just read the comments. It's a feature very unique in firearm design and many people don't know at first.
that is in the manual. some people should not have guns...
👌❤️👏👍🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
If you own a 10/22 and don't know about the hold open button then you shouldn't be allowed near any firearm.
Get an aftermarket auto bolt release. It's a drop in mod and costs about $12. BTW: I am working on a video on how to tie your shoe laces. Spoiler alert: Never tie the laces together from one shoe to the other or you will trip and fall down the stairs.
