Quick addition - Change the LUT interpolation (colour management project settings) to 'Tetrahedral' for better results - still reveals the same issue in this video, just a bit smoother.
Thank you! FYI, the "jagged lines" might be due to the "trilinear" interpolation of the LUT. If you set it to tetrahedral interpolation, the "jagged lines" should disappear.
It doesn't happen on other LUTS as shown in the video. That LUT is clearly not good. Yes, Tetrahedral is best setting, I wasn't set to it for this video - I just tried it and it smoothed it a bit but not enough I would trust that LUT. Thanks for the suggestion.
@@DarrenMostyn I have a guess here, which might be wrong. I think the size of the cube lattices are different. One might be a 17x17x17 grid, the other 33x33x33. One LUT uses a smaller cube than the other, and then trilinear interpolation is going to introduce more error. A dead giveaway for this would be a marked difference in file size.
Thanks for the pointers on color grading Apple Log from the iPhone 15 pro series. I am doing a lot more work with them and you definitely did educate me a bit more on proper color grading options and settings. Glad to see you back, Darren. Thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Very helpful to me, since I shoot on an iPhone, Sony a7C and a RED Raven for one of my clients. Being able to get all of those different cameras matched in Davinci is going to be a huge relief for me in making videos for this client. Cheers!
Thanks for this video Darren. I’ve been playing around with iPhone 15 Pro Max and the BM Camera App for about a month. It was great that your video confirmed my Resolve project settings. The only difference is that I set up Apple Log/ Rec 2020 in my Project Settings so that I didn’t have to do a CST in my node trees. I always work in DaVinci WG as my intermediate color space, and Rec709/Gamma 2.2 is the final output. Again, all set up in my project settings, Based on other UA-cam videos on the BM Camera App, I’ve been shooting at an ISO of 1250 with a VND. In just experimenting, I’ve found that a lot of color correction isn’t needed for most of the shots. Mostly just tweaks to exposure and contrast. So far, it’s been a fun kit to play with.
Great work as always, Darren. Welcome back. I'm planning on using Apple Log with the iPhone quite a bit this year as a 2nd or 3rd camera so this is super helpful. The biggest tip was the Rec2020 color space. So now I'm all set. I would love to see a video where you show how to grade GoPro flat profile footage as well. I'll be using those in my workflow. As you know, it's quite challenging to get it to match other cameras. Thanks again!
Thanks Tim. Using colour management is always best start point for matching all these different profiles. GoPro gets better but yes, always challenging
Can you do an episode on using a color chart with footage in resolve? I'm using the Calibrite ColorChecker Passport Video 2 but I think any of them would be the same. How would you fit it into your workflow and node tree? Do you ever receive footage in which one was used? Do you like/dislike working with them for any reason?

Thank you so much Darren for this tutorial, this is very helpful. We already discussed it yesterday on your Facebook group 😊 and I’m glad that you posted this video on Sunday instead of Monday.
It would be great to see a similar video, but for DJI Dlog M. Unfortunately, DJI hasn't published the specs for it so there is no setting for it in Resolve's colour management profiles.
@@DarrenMostyn In that video, you use DJI D-Gamut, which isn't correct for Dlog M. They are different log profiles. Using the D-Gamut profile makes things FAR too red, for example. (Using Pocket 3 video.)
Great tutorial. Thanks. I'm quite a newbie, I've got a question about ISO. Is it alright to use higher ISO (1250 - 1600) over 55 as a general rule? Doesn't it introduce a lot of noise to the video?. However, I've heard that the higher ISO (1100 - 1600) gives the best dynamic range.
Darren, this is so useful. One thing I'm still struggling with though is the Rec709 output gamma for a MacBook Pro M1. I've seen conflicting things when googling it. Some say Rec709 A, some say Gamma 2.2. I'm fairly new to Mac so when I used to use a Windows laptop I was comfortable to go with Gamma 2.4. Should I use output Gamma 2.4 regardless for compatibility with people who use Windows? Or do I need to choose the output gamma for my Mac display - which I don't know which to use! Your valuable advice would be much appreciated!! Many thanks! Just to add, my MacBook display setting is set to Apple XDR Display (P3-1600 nits) and the refresh rate is set to ProMotion.
@@DarrenMostyn yes as someone who hated colouring grading, I often found myself shooting with normal camera mode for easy of use and quick turn arounds for BTS. Thanks for this extrem helpful Clip. I'm working as freelancer to 80 % with clips from Iphone 15 pro max (my customers are VJs and the are working for german tv stations). I have one question. In your pdf "10 tips for better editing" you are giving the hint to use "a decent USB hub". To you have a tipp for me wich are the qualifications of those hub? Sorry for my english, I'm not native english speaker :-)
A few notes on the CST vs LUT comparison you did in the middle of this video. - First of all, please note that the CST you are using in those examples is set to "Output Gamma: Use Timeline" which in your case is DaVinci Intermediate. NOT Rec709. Anyways, since the comparisons with the ramp are mainly about banding artefacts in the poorly designed LUT, this point still comes across. - The fact that blacks get crushed in the LUT and CST examples is by design. This has to do with how the log OETF is designed. The Arri LUT you are using (shipped by Resolve) is really outdated and actually lifts the shadows up high, quite a bit. Arri released a much more technically accurate LUT long ago. If you compare this newer one to the CST they match quite closely. And they both crush the blacks of the ramp, because this is as I said by design.
Hi Sven. I didn't have DWG as timeline setting on LUT test, it was 709 default. I also never use the Arri LUT - only CST, it was to show an example of a 'better' tone curve, but appreciate your point. Thank you - very valuable input and appreciated. Darren
@@DarrenMostyn Thanks for clearing that up. It didn't come across in the video because both times the settings are shown it said DaVinci Intermediate. Anyways the point still comes across.
Hello Darren. Thank you very much for putting so much effort in your videos. Really helpful information. Can i get your advice on something? I usually use in the same footage material from a mirroless (10 bit 422) ,apple log and D-Cinelike from Dji( which I hope is 10 bit). As a workflow, after watching so many videos i decided to go with project settings at color management, color processing mode: HDR DaVinci Wide Gamut Intermediate and output color space: Rec 709-A( apple user). For color science :Davinci YRGB Color Management. After that i click on every video in my timeline and select the Input Color Science that i need. Flog, Apple Log and Rec 709-A for Dji videos. From this i grade as usually with no other CST applied in my timeline. Do you think this is correct? Your thoughts on this would be really helpful. Thank you!
Thanks for the video Darren. I tried to recreate what you did with the greyscale ramp (generator in resolve inside a compound clip). I get a linear waveform by default, but when i try to apply a cst from apple log to rec 709 2.4, my blacks are getting crushed by default. Using the same workspace settings as you. Any ideas? This is on an m1 macbook pro if it matters.
The blacks get crushed on a grayscale ramp, because Apple log's blackpoint is much higher. If you feed it something other than Apple Log, something that has a lower black point, the blacks just get crushed. You can see this by for example going from Gamma 2.4 to Apple Log using a CST.
Darren in the video you said set the colour management to HDR but I wondered what you do if you have footage from different cameras. Would you leave it as SDR?
Thank you. Since we are talking about iphone, what if we set the Timeline color space to Rec 2020 Intermediate instead of DaVinci WG? And avoid the first CST. Would that be bad? Is DaVinci WG give that much better results than REC 2020?
For this enot using an ND filter- does the standard Davinci Motion Blur add in at least some of the blur you would obtain with a 180 degree shutter and an ND? Is there a better way to add back in natural filmic motion blur within Resolve?? Thanks!
Hi, Darren. I've been watching your videos all week, and I want to thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I'm running into an issue with my video rendering, however. I'm noticing a significant loss of quality (i use h. 265) and color information (that i graded with so much effort), which ends up looking a bit washed out in the final video. Is there a specific setting in the rendering process I can adjust to prevent this? Or is there a particular format I should be using? Thanks again for your help!
BTW - the BlackMagic app allows you to record the Log profile in H.265 compression - still 10 bit - but a LOT more memory friendly than any variation of ProRes. I am not sure that ProRes offers enough extra flexibility in most circumstances to justify the huge extra memory usage and transfer hassles... Thoughts?
I deliver in whatever format my broadcast spec tells me to. that would never be H265 but is nearly always DNxHR or ProRes 4444. H265 10 bit is my export for my youtubes, yes.
At the end when you show how to do it automatically, you go to "Input COlour space" and insert Apple Log. I have newest Davinci resolve but APPLE is not present here?
I was using the Apple log, on the first cst just like you did one time and for what ever reason, it was hard to work with it, I switch it to Arri logc3 and it was easier to work with and it look better, anything wrong with that method?
Hi Darren, I have a question. When editing on the node tree and I’m outputting my colourspace and gamma. If I’m working on an M1 MacBook Pro Would I set my out put or P3-D65 game sRGB to match my screen or would I still keep rec709 Gamma 2.4? Essentially I don’t think everybody watching would be using an apple screen but I want to see the colours as accurately as possible to the exported version.
Thank you! I was just asking because sometimes editing on the go I don't have a monitor but I guess I should calibrate my MacBook to rec709 @@DarrenMostyn
Thank you for this and many other great videos. I have the stupidest question imaginable. I have Resolve set to to deliver REC. 709 using the Mostyn best ever node tree. The stupid question is what profile do I use on my monitor? I assume REC 709 but it looks terrible. I'm working offline on a Macbook Pro with a Retina display. (Yes, I know, I need a broadcast monitor but I just want to get in the ballpark. I have clocked a million hours in top end DI suites with famous colorists here in LA but I'm a director not a colorist. This project will eventually be graded by somebody else.) The default ColorLCD profile looks fine. The REC 709 profile is way too dark and the low end is crushed. The dark gray patches in the lower corners of SMPTE bars are not visible. Gray scale, same thing. Does anybody know what I'm not getting?
Why when I import my Apple Log videos in Davinci, they are already "colored"? In the iPhone or Mac, they are greyed. Like a log file should be. But when I import them in DaVinci, they look like a rec709 video.
@@LuckeGabriel nope. I found this behavior using DaVinci on iPadOS 18 e MacOS Sequoia. Just with davinci. Using other apps, this not happens. And just with AppleLog. With S-Log3 not.

The blacks get crushed on a grayscale ramp, because Apple log's blackpoint is much higher. If you feed it something other than Apple Log, something that has a lower black point, the blacks just get crushed.
You can see this by for example going from Gamma 2.4 to Apple Log using a CST.

Apple over processing on regular camera, not blackmagic camera app.
Forced into using DR 18.6? 😉
Me too!
great video!
Thanks!
can you make tutorial for sdr footage shot with black magic app in prores 422 codec.... because base model of i phone 15 doesn't have apple log .
that episode ive kind of done already here - ua-cam.com/video/BZqe9jXgPLg/v-deo.html
At the end when you show how to do it automatically, you go to "Input COlour space" and insert Apple Log. I have newest Davinci resolve but APPLE is not present here?
Why did you change the timeline to 2020 instead of keeping it davinci wide gamut. Is WG too big for that LUT?
I didnt change the timeline to 2020, just the input.
Where can I download my apple log in Lut? Please 🙏 I can’t find my apple log when I click Lut
you need to download it and install into your LUT folder. Apple site ?
I was using the Apple log, on the first cst just like you did one time and for what ever reason, it was hard to work with it, I switch it to Arri logc3 and it was easier to work with and it look better, anything wrong with that method?
No. Arri is a large colour space so also very effective
@@DarrenMostyn In other words, we can use what ever we want as long, it looks good.
Where can I download the apple to rec lut?
Hi Darren, I have a question. When editing on the node tree and I’m outputting my colourspace and gamma. If I’m working on an M1 MacBook Pro Would I set my out put or P3-D65 game sRGB to match my screen or would I still keep rec709 Gamma 2.4? Essentially I don’t think everybody watching would be using an apple screen but I want to see the colours as accurately as possible to the exported version.
output colour space/gamma should match your monitor settings. Your monitor settings should match your delievry requirements.
Thank you! I was just asking because sometimes editing on the go I don't have a monitor but I guess I should calibrate my MacBook to rec709

Is it possible to color grade in camera without using davvinci resolve
you can set parameters and make it not need a colour grade, but not actually colour grade.
@@DarrenMostyn I understand you can at least make look like nice somewhat look like color grade
How do you transfer footage from phone to iPad so can use davinci resolve
usb-c - copy file.
Trying to down load your node tree I'm subscribed to your email list under 2 different emails don't know where to go for the downloads.
Why when I import my Apple Log videos in Davinci, they are already "colored"? In the iPhone or Mac, they are greyed. Like a log file should be. But when I import them in DaVinci, they look like a rec709 video.
Your colour management setting is likely turned to Colour managed so it is doing the CST conversion for you automatically.
@@LuckeGabriel nope. I found this behavior using DaVinci on iPadOS 18 e MacOS Sequoia. Just with davinci. Using other apps, this not happens. And just with AppleLog. With S-Log3 not.
@@lonelyroamer In that case I have no idea as i'm not familiar with iPad's version. Also cool that iPad gets Sequoia early?
@@LuckeGabriel I’m a software developer so I need to test the new Xcode and OS with my apps. So I need early version of the OS
I like your videos, but I feel you provide conflicting CST instructions throughout your videos
my videos span 4 years - we all adapt and learn. Use my latest videos for best advice but my old videos still work - nothing changed in terms of what it will do to your image. This video explains my latest workflow but even this has evolved and that is a positive thing - IT IS STILL A GREAT WORKFLOW and my normal workflow ua-cam.com/video/kdTMRQP_V7E/v-deo.html - I move forwards . Hope that helps.

I dont understand this but thanks for feedback anyway.
Why does that intro still look like it's got lots of sharpening going on? almost like the non log footage. Is that just me that thinks that?
because some of it shot not with Blackmagic camera app. two days shooting and one day was a test and I threw a few clips in. Most of it is Blackmagic app.
thanks@@DarrenMostyn for getting back. Keep the great tutorials coming!
Its all Apple LOG, just not all with the Blackmagic App if that makes sense.
I find it's still extremely obvious that the intro clips were shot on an iPhone.
