I have! Its around 10 years old and flying it.
Started off as a quail chick nursery (4'x1'x1'/50gal)
With earth grass weeds and a rock...then filled it with pond water and left it alone...no light ferts filter nothing...huge colonies of daphnia asellus cyclops scuds etc
      Java ferns and rotundifolia.
Now lve added a gravel cap and montecarlo and a few more because l put 'baby' Shubunkins in to grow on and they spawned! Now got between 50 to 100 fry.
EVERYTHING in my tank is sourced free and locally apart from java fern and montecarlo...incuding some local waterplants.

I just discovered the local aquarium clubs that have monthly fish and plant “swaps” (they trade and also sell). The variety of fish and plants was way better than the best LFS at much lower prices, and the quality was impressive. I’m going to get all my fish and plants now from local breeders.

I stumbled upon this hobby about a month ago and was instantly hooked. Aquascaping looks so rewarding. While trying to learn tips on the hobby I found your channel and subscribed immediately. The low tech setups you have are so beautiful and your knowledge on how to do these tanks is top notch. Keep up the amazing work! Since you mentioned toothbrush to clean your aquarium, I recently got an electric waterproof Oral-B Pro 100 and it's by far one of the best things I've got to easily clean tight spots, hardscape, and equipment. It's pretty cheap toothbrush but does an amazing job and in fact I got another one for myself for cleaning my teeth :)

I love dirted tank! I am currently reading The Ecology of Planted Aquarium by Diana Walstad where she elaborately talked about this method. I would love to see a video on how you deal with plant nutrient deficiencies and how you treat your non planted plants with whatever fertilizer you use (I assume it's API Leaf Zone). I always see you talking about adding root tabs for planted tanks but never really address this issue for plants that feed off the water column. Love your videos!

Stunning tank..Being a newbie, curious to know how you picked up knowledge in your early planting days. I have a zebra danios covered tank (20 gallon high) to stop 'em flying plus Fluval Aquasky. Can't find info for best Aquasky intensity for low light plants. Love to do a fully planted tank, currently I've artificial plants plus Java Fern/Anubias.

Hi naddy. So initially, I just went out and spent most of my wages on plants...most of them died, but the ones that didn't?? I went and got more. And it kind of went from there, adding a new plant here and there in tons of different setups and learning as I go. Most of the aquascaping channels were on high tech and co2, so I just had to keep trying really. And then, here we are today :)

@@naddyn685 the best advice for those who are new to planted tanks on hindsight based on personal experience is
      1. Do not skip the basics of keeping an aquarium. Things like cycling an aquarium before introducing plants or fish is basic stuff that every aquarist know but many often skip these steps. One often gets away with doing so too. The issue with planted tank is when things start going wrong, corrections are much more difficult and hardwork if compared to just keeping fish in an inert set up.
Observing basics increases the chances of your planted tank thriving termendously.
      2. Be consistent.
If your maintenance requires a weekly 30% water change, than ensure a weekly water change is done. Planted tanks start going haywire when they are subjected to sudden changes in parameters or the changes are not consistent, be it water chemistry, light intensity or even number of livestock in them.
      3. Make small changes, and not more tha 1 at a time. Give time for your tank to adapt to the changes before changing something else.
Example, if you are still tinkering with your light intensity, CO2 setting etc, do not change all in one go.
Increase light intensity by 20% and leave it for atleast 2 weeks or 2 water change cycles before increasing CO2. Observe for 2 weeks or so before adjusting further with each subsequent changes becoming smaller and smaller until you hit the sweet spot.
The whole idea is for your tank to achieve a state of equilibrium or stability that only requires basic periodic maintenance like a small water change, trimming and filter cleaning.
Every time you make a change, every thing in the tank will be effected and will respond accordingly until a new balance is reached. The tank can adjust to changes within a limit.
That is why a new set up or big changes require frequent maintenance so to ensure the system is not overwhelmed by algae.
I started enjoying planted tanks after failing so many times previously to the point I took a break from keeping fiahes for a few years. Ensure whatever you do satisfies these three conditions and life will find its way to not only live, but thrive.

@@theallseeingeye9388 should you cycle first before planting in? Because tbh, I do not cycle since O assume that my water is pretty safe for fish and other water creatures. And for almost a year, I never experienced dying pets from snails, to shrimps, to different dishes. I live in an Island and I pressumed that well water do not have to be cycled at all. However, although I think not cycling my water is not affecting my pets, I guess it does affect my plants. As I said, my planted tanks have so much hair algae and diatoms that I had to rescape one just to clean it. And now it's having the same issue just after 2 days I re-did my tank. I tried to keep my lights 4hrs a day just so it can help, but I think it helps but just a little.

No. It’s not salt. It can change the PH though as it is an alkaline

It's not a significant enough amount to change much in the water, also, MD tends to change his water entirely 2 or 3 times before the fish are added. Any residual baking soda would be diluted to the point of being negligible.
