  • Keen to explore more offshore kayak fishing options Adam & Jasmine joined me for some surf basics at Noosa main beach. In this lesson I am helping Adam & Jasmine with confidence in launching and landing in the surf.
    We cover the Brace, forward strokes into on coming waves, picking which waves to ride and which to come in sideways in the broach & low brace technique.
    After only a couple of hours you will see that these guys grow in confidence with each run, we have a few spills and a lot of fun. More of this kind of practice helps not only with the skills but the paddle fitness and there’s nothing like that feeling of riding a great wave in - best Adrenalin rush and its free thanks to mother nature.
    Kayaks - Jasmine and I are in the Viking kayaks Espri, with Adam using his Viking Profish 400
    Video - Footage captured on GoPro 6 mounted to the Railblaza Pro series camera Boom and the Action hat

    A great vid. What a super way to build confidence. I'm quite conservative in my approach as I often go out by myself. I check the weather in every which way so as to avoid bigger surf.

    i always find it easier to launch out versus coming in. i don't have any problem with that. i need more practice coming in as i always try to let the wave roll under me and then i do a speed burst to get in and this brace technique will help with when im very shallow to the beach as the wave can't roll under anymore.

    • @PaddleGuy1
      @PaddleGuy1  6 років тому

      that's the one - side brace and broach the kayak is at times the best way to come into the beach - takes practice to know when to make the kayak come in sideways but that's all part of the fun in playing in the waves - once you master it adding a set of thigh braces will make it poss to do the same in bigger surf and remain in total control

    just went out on my fishing kayak for the first time. The launch was a lot easier than i expected. I got smashed on the way back in. Ill be sure to try the broaching and bracing technique. Would you say its a good idea to try turning the kayak parallel in shallow water first with small waves, getting in the bracing and broaching position and letting the waves push me in? once i get more comfortable i plan on going out deeper and deeper, close to the break zone and implementing some paddling and bracing and broaching. Thanks for the advice man!

    • @PaddleGuy1
      @PaddleGuy1  3 роки тому +1

      Glad to hear the info can help and absolutely yes just play in the small stuff and progress up to get used to how much leaning is required..this way you will better understand how the kayak responds in different waves

    • @PaddleGuy1
      @PaddleGuy1  3 роки тому +1

      yes, carbon gives you the best control and it's lighter which may only be grams but after a good session in the surf all the little things count!

      No just spend some time practising in the surf....if you are having trouble then the kayak might not be right for the environment- outriggers will get smashed off in my opinion

    • @PaddleGuy1

      Quality plastic kayaks are certainly better to learn surf in then risking breaking a glass ski on learner mistakes - just for some context for you though these guys love their offshore kayak fishing and use Viking Kayaks Sit On tops (quality product made in NZ and def not available at a Cosco assuming thats what you meant to write) - they are learning to get out and back in the surf to prepare them for summer pelagic fishing so we use the kayaks they will be fishing from. If your wanting to play in the surf just for fun and will eventually use a glass surf craft then certainly start out in a plastic kayak suited for surf then go for the glass version as they certainly perform better then plastic for surfing

      @@PaddleGuy1 Hi from the Gold Coast :) I'm looking to buy my first kayak. I've had a bit of experience with the Espri through rentals but I'm tossing up between the Espri and the Viking Javelin. Which would you suggest for a beginner? I'd ideally like to use it around the local waterways as well as the surf once I get some practice and more confident. Loved the video btw :) looks like heaps of fun

    surfing fishing kayak with around 100 plus lbs of additional weight? With a fishing bag, sometimes with 100 lbs of fish, live well, fishfinder, offshore rods, gaff, etc??? Unfortunately, reality is not always like this video shows when you are having fun with an empty kayak.

    • @PaddleGuy1
      @PaddleGuy1  5 років тому +7

      I think you missed the point mate - for first timers practise with no gear is critical in this environment to get the basics before you go loading up for a fishing session - this will arm you with the knowledge to know what you and your kayak can handle - we don't "surf play" with fully loaded kayaks, when fully loaded its called protect your gear and get in safely, but without some experience in surf you wont know the difference between whats safe and whats not for your ability and craft... if you have seen my other videos you will see I know whats its like to come through surf fully loaded, and for me that's not the time for play as it gets expensive when you over commit - good spectator sport though- take time to practise and the rest is easy

    • @usamedicine
      @usamedicine 5 років тому +1

      Paddle Guy I agree with you, if you make a video of how to return to the beach in rough surf fully loaded, it would be extremely useful for many kayakers
