- Referred to by the media as the “right-to-die activist”, Professor Sean Davison made headlines in June 2019 when he pleaded guilty to three counts of murder for assisting three men, all of whom were physically incapable of ending their own unbearable suffering, to die. BizNews spoke to Davison to find out more about a man who has accepted triple murder convictions in his fight to decriminalise voluntary euthanasia. What followed was an in-depth, raw and detailed discussion of his experience and the radical flaws in SA law that have undoubtedly left many people with an impossible choice between doing what is right and doing what is legal. The only real conviction when it comes to Davison is his realisation that it is fundamentally moral to have the option of an assisted death and to choose your own time of dying.
Such a heartbreaking subject. Brilliant and enlightening interview, Nadia.
I couldn't agree more with Sean Davison's views. We really need to discuss this matter more openly so that a humane solution can be found. Despite being religious, my 87 year old mother-in-law had clearly stated that she didn't want to suffer at the end of life. Having finally suffered a massive stroke, the NHS offered her children only one legal solution to ease her passing: Not to feed her.
I personally consider that offering starvation as a supposedly humane solution was both wicked and cowardly. One should be able to decide when and how to to end ones own life, painlessly and peacefully. We certainly now have the technological means to do this, both ethically and in a legally controlled manner. At the age I am now, I am personally concerned that the progressively painful condition I suffer from may make my own end unbearable. Do no harm. So much for medical ethics.
It will never be totally safe to legalise assisted suicide/euthanasia as long as there are politicians or money involved.
I am stunned by Sean Davison’s generosity, courage and honesty.Excellent interviewing.
In American, those who do not qualify for the ridiculously limited MAiD law are being asked to VSED. This man tells the true story of what this looks like.
Is it a crime under sa law to accompany a person to,eg, Switzerland, where assisted suicide can be arranged ?
You shall not murder!
No thank you.
Ugh, think Mengele
