I wonder if you could print a Springo cutting tool. Two wedges on one end that will fit into the Springo with a rod and a handle so that as you spin it, it will cut it open. One of the wedges won't really do anything but support the Springo. The other side could take a razor blade or other sharp object to do the cutting. This way it would be a lot safer to cut it apart.
3:20 in sure looks like a bunch of logs on the table, and it's great for snack, and fits on your back. Damn song will be in my head for days or weeks now. Thanks, not thanks.
I don't know how it is called in Slic3r but in Cura there is an option called "Slicing tolerance" which you should set to Exclusive when printing a springo to make the process of cutting the springo "layers" apart easier and cleaner.

I wonder what the filament differences are for these (for PLA and PLA+). I've been using Jayo filament and their black PLA+ is outstandingly strong... but their SILK Silver is really soft, but really brittle at the same time. If I print an object in Black and an identical object in SILK Silver using the best print settings for each... the black one will likely be indestructible (assuming it's not thin and weak) while the silver one will crumble in my hands easily. I don't have a lot of experience with many other filaments though. Their black has been so good I haven't bothered trying many others... and I don't have the money to always be buying different colors for cosmetic reasons or different companies to compare quality and strength of them all. I'd love to print in other colors, but I can't afford to spend $20 or more on a roll of filament just to have it be weak and useless like the silver. I don't print things for fun, but print for utility like 99% of the time. If anyone does have experience with printing these and knows a good filament that's flexible and still strong... please let me know. I'd be more willing to try a new filament with a recommendation (or new filaments). If you're one who likes Durable filament, I recommend the Jayo Black PLA+. It's very strong... but I can't say I've ever compared it to many others though.
Those are so cool Joel. I wonder if there would be a way to use strong dental floss or maybe even piano wire to cut the spirals apart? I'm sure there's a Rube Goldberg apparatus lurking around somewhere in that suggestion. LOL Thanks Joel, Sean, and Devin!
I made one of these last year and it turned out great. I cut it apart with a fresh razor blade. It wasn't that difficult. But it did take probably 20 minutes. I just made it out of pla, and it printed correctly on the first try.
That last song started playing and I was thinking, "Hey! That's Trent Palmer's intro!" :P Cool vid and really neat that you can print something like that, even if it does need a little TLC to get working right afterward. I wonder if you can get the space gun sounds from this one like the Slinky (TM)? For those who are wondering what I'm talking about, if you take a Slinky and stretch it out, then hold one end up to your ear and thump it somewhere along the length, you get something that sounds like a cheesy space gun from the 50's/60's. It's a lot like how they did the blaster and laser sounds in Star Wars. Those were made by holding a mic to a power pole guy wire and smacking the wire with a hammer.
