I watched the movie twice and I noticed a lot more the second time viewing it. This scene was made creepier because you hear her open the door and run into the street. When she turns to look back you hear the door open again but nothing after. You know it was in the house and it's coming straight for her just off camera. You hear the door open a third time but her dad asks if she's alright. The moment this thing is close enough to her she circles around it and runs into the house in order to get the car keys and leave. The creature is literally just off screen this whole shot. Something about knowing something is chasing her but you can't see where it is I found actually pretty unnerving.
what makes this scene so unsettling is that, though there's clearly something after her, it's something no one else can perceive. You see her refusing help from a well-meaning neighbor and her dad... the slasher equivalent of hiding an abusive relationship.
Yeah, I love how even when Annie looks in the distance at the beach, we see nothing before cutting to her mangled body. Also, judging by how she’s wearing heels, the entity most likely ambushed her by surprise.
The high heels. Something about the heels that scare me, just a faint little idea that this creature caught her off guard and she was doing this formal before. Like she was taken from one of the high points in her life to only be killed in a horrifying way
IT literally follows out through the door. You can hear an extra sound effect of the front door. We can't see IT, but she waits until it is close, then runs around IT to get her keys. The shot makes perfect sense.
One of the best opening scenes of not only any Horror movie in over a decade, but most films I've seen in recent memory. VERY effective, exactly what I would hope for...something I've missed in Horror films and pretty much gave up on mostly, but this is refreshing. Doesn't rely on gore, or ripping off other movies (besides maybe being inspired by some like Halloween, between the soundtrack and setting), just relies solely on suspense. It had me always wondering the next "step".
Great start to a great movie. This wasn't your usual "AHHH OMG BOO JUMP SCARE" movie. But it was definitely a creepy, tense movie from start to finish.
There were several moments where the music built up and the camera focuses on something and you expect the clichéd jumpscare, and the one time it does happen is purposely delayed, it's genius in so many ways
If you like how this film looks, check out the photography of the legend Todd Hido. His name was the first thing that popped into my head as I admired the cinematography.
I have so far watched this scene three times. Can't wait to see this film. Going to Minneapolis next weekend for it. It's about a 3 hour drive but I want to see this and support it on the big screen.
Not knowing the time period this was supposed to be set in drove me crazy with this movie. I'm guessing late 1990's or early 2000's. No cell phones but younger sister has some type of clam phone or something. Cars are old 1980's predominantly, but in this opening scene you see much newer cars. In the distance there's a Honda CR V that's at least a 2012, perhaps this opening scene is set in the future to most of the movie.
Jack Daw No. The director made it up so know one could pinpoint the exact year from any electronics. Made it seem like some alternate world and added another layer of creepiness.
I found nothing wrong with the opening, and found it interesting to hear Mr. Mitchell talk! Plus, the music growing in terror and intensity kind of added the appeal.
I'm a little disappointed Mitchell didn't mention the 2nd door creak, after she runs out... And then the 3rd door open is her dad. It's a little creepy detail to keep your ear out for.
Ben Sutton True. Much more light than in this vid. It seemed to me at first like it was dawn and the sun was rising. Very vague. Then you found out it was dusk a few minutes later when it was dark.
He says that IT never wears shoes so the person walking towards them in the end isn't IT. But in the scene at the school with IT following her as a old woman, IT is wearing shoes. Probably just an error but I need a part two!
I wanna see this movie soo bad! This was an awesome original scene. I'm a fan of horror always have been since I was a kid and this scene had a new kind of twist to it to make it even more suspenseful. You can tell the things following her, it's walking so she leads it out of the house and waits for there to be enough distance between her, it and the house before she can run back in to grab the car keys. This scene is also awesome because no one else but her can see it xD creepy as hell
The scariest aspects of the plot is that this creature is supernaturally strong and so you can't just kill it and even if you do as we find out at the end..you only killed its body, it will take another one. It also has aspects of The Box in that it's a long chain of misfortune that the victims are dealing with and they have to pass on the misfortune to become more fortunate(in The Box they had to kill someone with the button to get rich). I didn't like that when it killed Greg it was electrocuting him, but where did the electricity come from or what was that all about and why didn't it electrocute her on the beach if it has electricity powers?
I really really want to see this movie but it hasn't been released on DVD or iTunes yet. I would like to know when it will be released because this looks like the type of horror movies I eat up!
Ive always wondered what if they travelled to another country? wouldnt that buy them a lot of time since the thing is walking and it walks very slow, maybe the thing cant move across oceans
I wondered about that as well. The conclusion I came to is that 'It' is a metaphor for death and it wouldn't matter how far you run, it'll always catch up to you. It's the concept of waiting for 'It', not the physical creature itself that is terrifying (and rather melancholy).
It appears that it can change forms whenever it wants, so that really wouldn't make a difference. There were scenes where it changed appearances at random, so all it would have to do is take the form on someone in the other country and you're screwed again. But it's all a metaphor more than anything else.
+Andrew Milito It can't possess other people, it can only make itself resemble other people. It can't teleport or anything like that. All it can do was walk at a slow pace. We know this because in the pool scene, Jay says that it won't show up for a few more hours. That means it had to slowly walk all the way from Jay's house to the pool. It took much longer to get there because they drove and it walked. If they drove for 6 hours, for example, it'd probably take the monster 24 hours to travel the same distance. So, if they flew to the other side of the world (a 24 hour trip), it'd take the monster many months to walk or swim the same distance. But, in an interview, the director did say it could possibly board a plane... but I feel like it wouldn't be intelligent enough to actually do that.
Im a horror fanatic and found NOTHING creepy whatsoever about this scene. Yahoo News blew it up saying this was the scariest thing they've ever seen....I guess compared to Barney and Friends, maybe. But seriously, this movie is one that i want to watch despite this non scary clip
I love the atmosphere it sets up, it gives off the impression that something is off, something doesn't feel right, which fits into the rest of the film' aesthetic. Out of curiosity, what are some movie scenes you find scary or creepy?
Graham Dickerson Well after watching a few reviews on this movie, Im actually really hype for it. But to answer your question, the eerie scene from "The grudge" where the black silhouette of the ghost crawled out of the elevator and started to approach the security camera. That scene creeped the hell out of me along with some others but itd be forever if I went through them all lol
I went and saw the movie last night. It's not about being scared. As you watch it you start to understand the focus. It was fantastic. I'm so tired of run of the mill horror movies. I can't stop obsessing over this film. Also I'm a sucker for 80s themed films. Like drive and this. But the acting and everything it's wonderful.
the thing chasing her is slower than she is, so she's moving it further away from the house so she has time to run around it and grab the keys without it entering the house
...see, makes me wonder if people put thought into films like these. I mean you saw the movie... why do you think she was running in a circle... what could she possibly be running from. It's not hard to get away from this thing. It just never stops coming...
It was a one take shot so no one could mess up. It was getting dark. It's low budget so they probably had fear that a car could drive through the shot at any moment.
This is hilarious, she just runs out in high heels and sleeping wear and runs in a full circle and gets in her car and drives away. This is something I'd expect out a 'Scary Movie' title.
If you guys actually see the movie the sound is what makes this scene very creepy. The sound in this film is almost like it is its own character in the story.
I HOPE EVERYONE CAN SEE THIS. THIS SCENE IS AMAZING!!!! When I watched it in theaters I didn't catch it but watching here I did. Notice how she runs a distance into the street and keeps taking steps backwards as to keep something following her but at a distance. She's looking almost in the camera's direction then at the person asking if she is alright and then back in the same direction walking backwards. Then at her dad then back in that same direction. IT FOLLOWed her out of the house and into the street!!! But YOU can't see it only she can. Then she runs AROUND it and in the house with only a few seconds before it will meet her at the door on her way out. THEN the music as she comes out because (you can't see it) but it is halfway up her front lawn when she comes out. She only has a quick second to turn on the car and back out before it dives through the passenger side window. NOW watch it again and let the music hit you at the right time. THIS WAS AN AMAZING SCENE!!!
Well the director's commentary certainly didn't help make it creepy. I didn't really find anything scary about this part. I don't think we are watching as an observer, but maybe the thing the girl is running from. because she runs around us back to the house instead back the way she ran. I had to mute the clip and play silent hill ambient music.
Please go see this film. And don't be a mindless zombie. If you chose to let the movie tell you how things are you wont admire it like you should. Use critical thinking this isn't insidious.
Is it safe to assume there will be a sequel, given the ending? So many garbage horror movies that can't even touchthis film get endless sequels. If there is a sequel, hope they don't botch it like Insidious 3.
there is absolutely nothing creepy , scary, or otherwise about this scene. I don't get it, and after watching the other trailers all I can say is...Wow, you wasted my time.

Mark English it's pretty much the JAWS effect,no?
Yes, but it's taken further since only the carriers and the ex. can see it.
Michael Stefano In theatres. I'll def buy this when it comes out as well I think.
Oh hi Mark!
***** I know! If I could describe this movie in a word it's "Effective". It's effective in it's delivery and how much we learn and see or are shown.
I love how the scene is shot in one take. Observing, surrounding, stalking, lingering...following.
that's how most of it was shot which added a lot to it.
Sam Mendes would be proud (:
what makes this scene so unsettling is that, though there's clearly something after her, it's something no one else can perceive. You see her refusing help from a well-meaning neighbor and her dad... the slasher equivalent of hiding an abusive relationship.

This clip actually reminds me of a dream. Where you kind of sort of don't run far away but sort of tip toe around something.
Ryan Fuller You are onto something. The director stated in interviews he was going for a dreamlike/nightmare atmosphere.
Ryan Fuller The movie is based on a couple of nightmares the director had where he got followed by someone who was walking really slow.
IT literally follows out through the door. You can hear an extra sound effect of the front door. We can't see IT, but she waits until it is close, then runs around IT to get her keys. The shot makes perfect sense.

poetic, eerie film.
i really liked the long sequences/takes in this film, also the intense wait to see if there's gonna be someone in the frame when the camera turns
"What's wrong?..."
"Nothing. Just running away from my house, in high heels, and pajamas, like my life depends on it."
I knew from this opening scene that this would be a great horror movie from the brilliant cinematography and music.
Great start to a great movie. This wasn't your usual "AHHH OMG BOO JUMP SCARE" movie. But it was definitely a creepy, tense movie from start to finish.

The music in this movie tho

It's suppose to be the near future
yea. that bothered me too. The music made me think of the 80s
yea. that makes sense..... it was an ok movie. if there were a sequel i would go see it...........
Yeah that clam phone was what threw me off with the time period! I loved the movie, it was really simple but still felt original
Yea. That threw me off too!
spookier than spooky skeletons
I definitely recommend this movie. It is nowadays a surprise to find a good one.
I loved the sea shell-'kindle'/phone with Dostoyevsky!!!!! Do they exist?
Jack Daw No. The director made it up so know one could pinpoint the exact year from any electronics. Made it seem like some alternate world and added another layer of creepiness.
Darn, but hey, I see a market ;)
I found nothing wrong with the opening, and found it interesting to hear Mr. Mitchell talk! Plus, the music growing in terror and intensity kind of added the appeal.
I'm a little disappointed Mitchell didn't mention the 2nd door creak, after she runs out... And then the 3rd door open is her dad. It's a little creepy detail to keep your ear out for.
The movie is really great. It builds into something quite wonderful.
Those are some nice ass heels.
woah, I'm impressed she can run that fast in those shoes, I'd be tripping all over myself!
I demand the blooper reel
is brighter in the cinema...great shot...like a fashion shoot
Ben Sutton True. Much more light than in this vid. It seemed to me at first like it was dawn and the sun was rising. Very vague. Then you found out it was dusk a few minutes later when it was dark.

Catherine Kamlley yea and i think the very first time the audience sees "it", i thought i saw sandles... ?
"Tricky Shot..."
I wanna see this movie soo bad! This was an awesome original scene. This guy would be the perfect director for Stephen King's IT which also deals with a creature that only kids can see.
Phil Miller Andrés Muschietti (Mama) is directing it..sorry for the time's long comment lol
This scene gave me Get Out vibes
Great stuff

It follows is by far my favourite horror film.
There is something really creepy about this... but I'm not sure what that is.
Don't know if I'm reading too much into it, but does anyone think the number on the house (1492) is deliberate?...
Deliberate to what end?
+gaft24 *the year your ancestors pillaged raped enslaved murdered and settled in America
This was filmed in my brother's neighborhood. :)
Which neighborhood? Someone on the horror Reddit is trying to visit all of the film locations of this movie!
The address of the house is 1492 yorkshire rd, Birmingham MI
Im deaf i didnt hear the second door opening
this looks like Grosse Pointe, MI
I swear it looks like Michigan!
just noticed now that the house number is 1492...
Very cool. :)
That’s just the first shot :)
Great movie.
One take?? In heels?!? 👠 👠?! Dayum that's stupid/and risky..as a non-stunt actor. But I have to applaud that. 👏👏👏
I really really want to see this movie but it hasn't been released on DVD or iTunes yet. I would like to know when it will be released because this looks like the type of horror movies I eat up!
It's out now, and so is the soundtrack:3

Lilly Rose the director said in a interview that the entity would follow someone across the world by boarding a plane
the thing has no physical rules
may it appears suddenly there after u leave for another country
I at least admire the cinematography the camerawork even the visual style and aesthetic
Craven and carpenter . Slow burn . White knuckle. The lens follows , sits , and stays .
Hey guys, how about you go and see the movie and not just watch 2 minutes of it before you judge it... Just a thought, thank you.
Im a horror fanatic and found NOTHING creepy whatsoever about this scene. Yahoo News blew it up saying this was the scariest thing they've ever seen....I guess compared to Barney and Friends, maybe. But seriously, this movie is one that i want to watch despite this non scary clip

The movie was pretty good but don't get too hyped up about it cause then it won't live up to your expectations.
LoXHumaN agreed, though I personally thought it was pretty darn good!
I went and saw the movie last night. It's not about being scared. As you watch it you start to understand the focus. It was fantastic. I'm so tired of run of the mill horror movies. I love this scene and this movie just because of how creepy it is, but why does she run in a circle around the camera like that?
+projectmatrix1 she's being chased by something she can only see
+Source _ I know that part. I've seen the movie. It's her running in a circle around the camera that confuses me.
the thing chasing her is slower than she is, so she's moving it further away from the house so she has time to run around it and grab the keys without it entering the house

DRM fell off the map after It Follows. USL didn't do much for me, IMO. Had high hopes for him; hope he can return to greatness.
you writing it but directing the film without 100% following your script.
Why the hell would this be a tricky shot to do? haha
In order to capture the right atmosphere, especially the specific time (dusk), and the actors' movements.
Any shot with one take is tricky, especially since it was dusk.Time wasn't on their side.
It was a one take shot so no one could mess up. It was getting dark. It's low budget so they probably had fear that a car could drive through the shot at any moment.
Lighting.
This scene was pretty hot with the chick in heels
O the story line was excellent, but the ending was terrible, was the follow done or what?
So you said that to say WHAT?
exactly
And?
ikr
How was this tricky to capture? This is the most basic scene to shoot.
The were literally on a super slim timer for the sunsetting.
This is hilarious, she just runs out in high heels and sleeping wear and runs in a full circle and gets in her car and drives away. This is something I'd expect out a 'Scary Movie' title.

Yeah you scum bag
Who is this chick?
Slenderman
love how all 3 of the female lead roles were filled with such cute actresses
aliasing on the trees, just saying.
how could it have been prevented?
RestoreThis aliasing filter, less sharpening in post or just a different camera altogether.
I thought this was supposed to be a scary movie. I'm bored.
Is it safe to assume there will be a sequel, given the ending? So many garbage horror movies that can't even touchthis film get endless sequels. If there is a sequel, hope they don't botch it like Insidious 3.
gaga
there is absolutely nothing creepy , scary, or otherwise about this scene. I don't get it, and after watching the other trailers all I can say is...Wow, you wasted my time.
It was supposed to be an Anotomy of the scene not stating obvious facts.
The movie sukd and I'm a huge horror movie fanatic who loves to see them alone without anyone else around....so 10 thumbs down for me
Do you watch the older more scary films that have 18 ratings or the newer ones aimed at 12-15 year old audiences
