Brave was released on my 18th birthday the year my mom died. I can't remember if she even got to see it. We had a tumultuous relationship. To this day, I cry when I watch it. Objectively, I know it's not the best Pixar movie, but I have a soft spot for it. It had so much potential and so much heart, it was just suffered from the conflicts during production and too many plots being combined.

Fun fact: my instructor in film school worked at Disney during the time Cars 2 came out. It was made intentionally terrible. Basically Pixar was only under contract with Disney for a certain number of movies. Pixar did animation for a segment in Fantasia and expected that to count as one of the movies, but Disney disagreed and refused to let them go. As a result, Pixar intentionally made Cars 2 terrible as a huge middle finger to Disney. Idk if I remembered all the details right but I think you boys should look into it for a future vid!

It isn't terrible though. Idk anyone that actually *hates* the movie. It's just not up to the usual standards they have. I'll agree with the brothers here, everything they've made is a 6/10 or better. Cars 2 is that 6/10.

To me, Finding Nemo is untouched. The story is amazing in its simplicity, but every problem that arises is organic, and is solved due to ingenuity and character-advancing breakthroughs- Marlin learning to let go, Dory building connections, Nemo growing and trusting his own abilities. This is the only Pixar movie to me where the "tearjerker" moment feels truly earned and not an annoying, heavy-handed nudge to make me cry. First, the openner with Coral protecting her babies. And finally when Nemo pretends to be dead and Marlin finds him like that. They are given weight, but not in a way that's so obvious and emotionally manipulative.
I also love, love, love the environments. Gorgeous! Of course the coral reefs look amazing. But even the way they animated vast open waters. And the score is top notch. Perfectly accompanies the great adventure. But with numbers that evoke such peacefulness. Nemo Egg gives me chills and makes me teary every single time. I think Toy Story gives it a run, but this is some of the best voice casting for Pixar, too.
I love this movie. I think it's actually perfect.

Finding Nemo to this day is still my all-time favorite Pixar film, and 1 of my favorite animated films or just films in general of all time. It's actually so interesting and mind-blowing to me that as a kid when watching this, I would relate a lot more towards Nemo, but still understood Marlin's protective dad phase. Now as 23 years old, (even though I don't have kids yet) I find myself relating more with Marlin, but still understanding Nemo's perspective. This is 1 of the only films I've seen that has made me feel differently about characters the more I grow up and become an adult. It's super fascinating. Of course, the opening scene with Coral and most of her children being taken away from Marlin and him protecting egg Nemo is still to this day 1 of the most gut-wrenching and emotional scenes I've ever seen in media and makes me tear up just thinking about it. This film has always been apart of my life and will always be a major part of my life until the day I die. It's a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Truly perfect...

J's story about The Good Dinosaur showed how it is often personal connections that can increase your overall perception of a film. I will say that my feelings about Finding Nemo and Finding Dory are that they belong in the top tiers because of my personal connections to them. As a special education teacher, and the sister of someone with both physical and cognitive disabilities, I found that representation to be very meaningful. I will also always have a special place in my heart for FN because right after my high school graduation, my family went on a Disney cruise and the film premiered that week, so we got to see the film while on the ship and we were given buttons, "I saw it first at sea."

I saw it with my dad in theaters when i was a kid and one time while i was watching it several years ago, i got a phone call from him saying he was having a heart attack. (he's fine and alive now, thank goodness!) There may have been another special occasion in between, i can't remember, but it's definitely a movie i always reach for because of the good looking food, relatable characters, and beautiful setting! Fun fact about Brave!
It was actually the other way around (of what you guys were imagining).
The movie started as a mother-daughter story, based on the life of the director (a woman). But she left mid-way (fired I think?) and the guy that they put in as director didn't think the story was interesting enough so he made it more of an action movie.
Truly a tragedy, in my opinion.

It has such a severe identity crisis. I remember at the time being SO disappointed at the sudden turn into the bear storyline out of almost nowhere. At the same time, if that had been foreshadowed more clearly and that was what the actual film had been clearer that it was about then it would have probably been much clearer and purposeful. I agree the (forced removal/coerced stepping down kind of situation I think) of the original director was what seems to have totally waylaid the movie.

Wall-E is such an interesting comparison to Ratatouille to me. I swear Wall-E is the epitome of a film that ACTS like it has wisdom, but at the end of the day is just baby's first existentialism with a cute robot. There is more actual wisdom JUST in Anton Ego's speech at the end of Ratatouille than in the whole of Wall-E. Number 2 in the whole canon behind only the GOAT that is Inside Out.

People were just to ignorant and thought they knew what this franchise of the Cars Franchise is when the first film show 1 bit of what this franchise is and not so much what these films should be about. The Cars franchise is about John Lasseter showcasing the world the things that made his childhood growing up. 1st film, cars themselves, road trips and his love for the automotive world. 2nd film, spy movies, spy cars and travelling around the world.

See I think Brave totally works because in the banquet hall when Merida gives her speech she becomes closer to her mother. She takes that step and starts seeing things her way and also starts appreciating hrf mother's diplomatic skill, whereas with the bear you have Merida's mom become more like Merida. The fighter, the courageous warrior. The feral bear represented what happens when you let resentment born from miscommunication blossom into hatred. Ultimately it was understanding and the willingness of Merida's mom to fight when negotiating no longer works, to go with the flow and for once not think to defeat mordeau and break the curse. It wasn't just Merida mending the tapestry snd trying to heal the breach (although I think it would have been enough to break the mom's curse) it was also the mom walking a bit in her daughter's shoes. Merida learned to appreciate her mom which would have been enough to heal the wounds and break the curse. But Merida's mom learning to appreciate Merida gave them a chance at true overflowing happiness and joy in eachothers company. They became friends beyond just mother and daughter and I really love that. That nuance there it's so hard to describe but as someone who has always failed to actually reach that with my mom, I definitely see and feel it. This movie is top tier for me.

Not to mention (for Toy Story 2) figuring out later that the conflict/tragedy of the Prospector character can also be viewed as somewhat of a metaphor for what happened to Hollywood films during the transition from the 50s and early 60s into the late 60s and early 70s. The Cowboy Western genre was HUGE and then fell out of vogue.

I feel like I'm in the minority here, but I don't find the opening to Up as sad as people say, especially considering you found it sadder than Finding Nemo. Monsters University: The light of 2013. The story of how Mike and Sully met is unforgettable. It teaches us that when one door closes, another opens. The animation was great, the character development was perfect, and the characters were loveable. Not bad for Pixar's first prequel
The Good Dinosaur is not Pixar's biggest miss. This movie was the one of the highlights of 2015. This movie is what got me interested in Dinos. Arlo is relatable, Spot is loveable, and the visuals are just stunning. One of Pixar's most underrated films, this movie needs a sequel to remind people how great this movie can be
Pixar's 13th movie, Brave takes us to 10th century Scotland to tell the story of Pixar's most unforgettable stories. Merida's urge to be free is divine, and her relationship with her mother is how all relationships teens have with their parents. This Pixar movie take a break from the action, and gives us a more calm and sensible approach to what Pixar can do. Pixar doesn't need to stick to their normal tropes. This Pixar proved to us that changing things up isn't always bad
Will someone please explain to me why Cars: an all time classic is always shunned from people's lives? I mean, come on what's not to like? The characters are enjoyable, the animation is on point, and this movie has a great theme: make the best of life's challenges. Hating Cars is like, hating life.
The horrific year of 2020 kicks of with Onward. This film will have a special place in my heart. The only reason it flopped at the box office is not because I was bad, but because it was released at a bad time. This movie reminds of the relationship I have with my brother. The idea of magic was astonishing. Ian's character arc is amusing, but relatable. Barely's is relatable also. Chris Pratt and Tom Holland are an iconic duo
Pixar's 25th, and most recent film brought magic into 2022. As Pixar's first Asian protagonist, Mei is funny, amusing, and just down right funny. Representation is significant in this movie, from the locations in Canada, to the Chinese culture, this film shouod put Domee Shi in a director's hall of fame. Turning Red reminds us to be out true self
Where do I begin with this movie? Luca put Italy on the map. Jack Dylan Grazer, Jacob Tremblay, and Emma Berman brought their respective characters to life. This movie shows us how far friendships can go without experiencing any romantic stereotypes. From brotherhood, to acceptance, to friendship, Luca brought bliss to 2021. Silenzio Bruno!!!
What do you want to be known for on Earth?? 2020 wraps up with Pixar's 23rd movie: Soul. Another Pixar tale about the afterlife, Soul is the perfect movie for Black History Month. Joe and 22 balance each other out, and Tina Fey and Jamie Foxx are amazing actors. The animation of the You Seminar is vibrant and goofy, and NYC is colorful and lively
After 14 years, Brad Bird returns with the longest awaited Pixar sequel yet: Incredibles 2. With new animation, and new tech, Incredibles 2 gives us the aspect of the first movie with a few new add-ons to make this movie spectacular. Jack-Jack's newfound powers + Dash's hot-headedness + Violet's attitide + Bob's softer side + Helen's step into the spotlight= one fantastic movie
1998's A Bug's Life helped put Pixar on the map. A story of freedom, acceptance, self-love, and growth is what Pixar is known to make. If you ask me, this movie met the standards of Toy Story
Toy Story 4 shouod get more love than hate. This movie is a perfect ending to Pixar's oldest franchise. This movie ended Woody's arc in the best way possible. The ending was emotional, Gabby is a relatable antagonist, and the animators did I fantastic job
Brad Bird's 2nd flim and Pixar's 8th movie, Ratatouille is an example of great representation of a country's culture. Ratatouille has a hidden allegory for racial acceptance. With their first human-animal duo, Pixar made one of the world's best duet: Remy and Linguini
As Pixar's first sequel, Toy Story 2 provides us with characters that warm our hearts Jesse's backstory is emotional, and Stinky Pete's intentions are understandable. The 1st 2 Toy Story movies brought life to the 90's
Pete Docter has never disappointed, and thisnis proven in the 2nd flim he's directed: Up. Pixar's 10th movie is one of the most emotional films to date. I love Carl's motivation of the adventure. Carl wants to make his wife's dream come true. This move can teach us many life lessons.
Finding Nemo is an ocean version of Brave. The movie is heartwarming. This movie is perfect. There are no complaints in this movie.
Monsters Inc. is awesome. Mike's brains and Sulley's personality balance each other out. All of the impossible things that could have happened, not happening is what makes this movie so good.
Coco is a love letter to Mexico. It shows us that family is everything. Miguel is an amazing child protagonist. As what Turning Red did for Canada,, and what Luca did for Italy, Coco is a perfect interpretation of Mexican cuisine, and culture. I love the color scheme of the Land of the Dead, and overall this movie is a treat.
Inside Out really makes me appreciate my emotions. The dynamic of Joy and Sadness is fun to see. Pete Docter has made one of the best movies of 2015. This movie shows us how all of your emotions are there to look out for you, and this movie teaches the audience that without sadness, there can be no joy
Toy Story is perfect movie. There is nothing to question in this movie. Woody and Buzz are brothers from different mothers. Woody are the toy version of Buzz and Woddy. Sid deserved the treatment he got. He needs to learn to not mistreat his toys
As the first and only love story Pixar has made, Wall-E is great!!! Wall-E and EVE is an amazing couple. Pixar delivered the perfect film in 2008. Auto is the best AI villain of all time.
Toy Story 3 is the the majesty of all movies in 2010. The animation is sensational. Lotso is a good antagonist. Woody's urge to stay with Andy is relatable, and the ending is heartbreaking. Overall this movie is one of the best I've ever seen in my life.
The Incredibles knocks Marvel out of the park!! I love the idea of a superhero family. The Incredibles is perfect for all ages. There r no complaints of the movie
These movies have no flaws. No Pixar movie is superior or inferior than another.
    Here's my ranking:
    1. All 25 movies
    2. N/A

Regarding Mordu in brave, I made a tumblr post several years about it. Here's the gist
Mordu and Merida are foils of each other. They each have family troubles, they each go to the same whittler of wood, they each get their wish, and they each have a visual depiction of their family that gets damaged. Mordu's depiction is his brothers and him on a stone tablet, and Merida's is of her family on a tapestry. The tablet gets damaged and, it being made of stone, cannot be repaired, visualizing how it was too late for Mordu to save himself and his brothers from his decision. The tapestry gets damaged and, it being made of cloth, can be repaired, but the repair is visible, visualizing not only the repaired relationship between Merida and her mother, but also that each of them had changed significantly for the better as a result of the rift between them. Mordu was indeed the cautionary tale Merida needed to learn from so she/her mother didn't fall as far as he did.

Oke, here is the look on all the toy-story movies from a person who just recently watched all of them for the first time:
    - All are amazing
    - It is a perfect trilogy and still the fourth has a reason to exist
    - The fourth one separates itself from the first three enough that it can stand as it's own movie outside the trilogy (one way it does that is by removing most of the old characters)
=> I almost like the fourth Toy Story most of all of them (but at the end of the day it is simply a pretty different movie to the first 3)

I think Toy Story 4 is the most radical of them all- and that migjt be why some people will hate it. The idea that a toy gets to just be, in service to no human, without the need for human interaction, upends the whole world of the first 3, where there adventures always lead them to Andy, and eventually a new child.

    • @atulbalaji1321

I don't hate the fourth one, I kinda like it even. But I felt that all the characters did not act like themselves, compared to the trilogy and within the movie itself. It's a decent Pixar movie but not a good Toy Story movie imo.

J hit exactly how I feel about Soul (I would have put it A Bug's Life above it) I really really liked it, I got teary when Joe flashed back to each of his "spark" moments and I just felt when he got a third chance at life that everything was pointless, I wish he had said no when he was given the chance again. I have always loved how Pixar took fantastical situations and paired them with emotional realities, and while keeping the fantasy doesn't stray from the reality of emotion i.e Ian couldn't meet his father because he never did yet Soul literally brought someone back from the dead, I just felt it was a great movie cheapened by a please all ending.

The reason I love Brave so much is that Mordu (Mor'du?) and his story is more of a cautionary tale of what Merida could cause her present day to repeat. Listening to this does make me think it may had different feel it Merida successfully killed Mordu as an "I won't let myself be like you" sort of thing, but I still love how it went as is. I can still watch this movie a hundred more times and have it be my all time fav

One thing about Merida, it seems like two stories because it is. The original director had an idea of where the movie was supposed to go and what kind of movie it was gonna be, and she got fired for reasons I won’t get into here (if you’re interested there’s lots of videos and articles about it), and then the new director decided to take the movie in a different way. So it actually went the other way around, the badass Mordue bear character fighting scene came with the second director, the first director was a female and her vision was a mother-daughter film. So the magic-heavy second part of the movie is because of a different director. That’s why the movie feels so disjointed, because it’s basically two completely different films smashed into one.

I think it really resonated with me because as someone who was going through a lot of physical health issues at the time it came out, the way Pixar emphasizes not letting a disability hold you back from your goals was just beautiful.
I completely disagree with your stance on Incredibles 2. I was about 14 when it came out and i really loved how they showcased everyday family life with homework, and teenage year drama and showing some of the quirks that every family has. I personally think the first movie ended on a note that implied there could be a sequel, but I think it would have been really cool if we’d gotten some kind of time jump where the kids were grown up and trying to make super heros legal again - maybe centering around Dash? Great video as always!

As a someone who was 11/12 years old in 2002 and asian-american (although meilin is canadian), I related to Turning Red on a whole different level. It felt like that movie was made for me. Like honestly I got so excited after I watched Turning Red that I texted my brother to see if he had seen it yet. I relate to Turning Red so much is because it was made by a woman who's the same age as me and who's also asian. At the end of the day, Ben probably didn't relate to Turning Red like he thought he should've because it's simply not made for him. Asians are barely starting to play prominent roles in Western media so we haven't had a lot of representation until Turning Red and other movies like Shang Chi, Parasite and Crazy Rich Asians. It's not a bad thing that Ben can't relate to Turning Red! Different kinds of movies are meant to reach and connect so many different kinds of people, and it's great that we're getting that representation now

Toy Story 4 should not be considered a Toy Story movie along with the others, if anything it should be completely stand alone. The whole meaning behind Toy Story is that the toys always have eachothers backs and they are truly eachothers family even though Andy is their focus. “Besides, When it all ends, Ill have old Buzz Lightyear to keep me company, to Infinity and Beyond”

My "head cannon" for Cars 2, from a lore standpoint (not real life), is that it's one of Mater's Tall Tales, as it's happening, instead of Mater retelling it to one of his friends. Think about it. The general formula for Mater's Tall Tales' is: Mater tells something to a friend (typically McQueen), they don't believe him, Mater tells the story (often with a "and you were there, too!" line, once Mater finishes, the friend is like, "I still don't believe it. It sounds too outrageous to be true", something happens that proves that Mater was telling the truth. Now, with Cars 2, the basic formula is: Mater stumbles into becoming a secret agent without realizing it, meets a girl who says "Meet me at the rendezvous", Mater then tells a friend that he now has a girlfriend, the friend doesn't believe him, we experience the tall tale as it's happening with Mater, the friend still doesn't believe Mater once the tale is done, the lady-friend confirms that she is indeed his girlfriend, and his friend says "Okay, now I believe you". Sure, there are a couple key differences between Mater's Tall Tales and Cars 2, but it still follows the same rough outline. What do you guys think?

It was the ending. Basically, the story ran out of time and needed to get happy real fast. The parents had 0 reasons to be happy that Luca competed in a triathlon, yet it was their reason for letting him stay on land. The townspeople hadn't interacted with them, but they were all accepting at the end - I guess because of the pasta race too. And then the friends split up because the kid with no parental guidance just didn't feel like going to school, and Luca was cool with abandoning him. The grandmother kept hinting that she liked going on land, but she never showed up. It would have made so much more sense to have her show her poker buddies that she was a sea monster than those 2 random women. It wasn't thought out imo

The amount of people wanting a 'nemo fish' or a 'dory' fish. None of them really paid attention when I had to explain, especially for the 'dory fish', a Blue Tang, they had very specific requirements to be happy and not die relatively soon. But unfortunately, you had to take them at their word even if deep down you knew you were sending a fish to a death. Safe to say, I never completed my work experience there...

Disney theory: every single Disney film is connected they're just each different universes so the mcu is 616 and the Pixar theory universe is 113.

Would you want them to release the older Pixar movies with newer graphics to match the newer Pixar styles like they do with some older video games but keep it exactly the same scene by scene or keep it original film style til the end of time?

My oldest made me almost hate Toy Story 1 and 2 she watched ALL THE TIME. And she moved on to the Car trilogy and I was so thankful.

Honestly I enjoy cars as a movie so much more since being able to visit cars land a couple years ago! The vibes are so good! Lol weird how that happens!

I agree. I think that going to Cars Land definitely increased my overall appreciation for and enjoyment of the movie.

when Ben put onward above turning red, I, the target audience of turning red who heavily related to it, lost it

You say that, but I was a young girl in 2002, who loved boybands for a little bit, and I still loved Onward more than Turning Red. Maybe it's because of my fantasy background and I got all the jokes in Onward. But truthfully, I think Turning Red has so many humiliating parts, it's kind hard to watch for me. I felt so bad for Mei.

Onward is great. Turning Red is absolute garbage. Plain and simple.

My favorite pixar movie is Coco. However, a close second has to be cars. It came out at the perfect time for me (I'm 23 so it came out when I was like 7 or 8) and it holds a special place in my heart. Plus the soundtrack is awesome.

The only one I really had different feelings about was Monsters University. I don't know why but I've watched this one a ton and I just really like it. I can completely understand why other people wouldn't have many feelings about it but I have to say it is one of my favorites. I also love Ratatouille.
