Did anyone actually watch the video. Most of the comments here indicate they didn't watch. Play list for this project series ua-cam.com/play/PLpy7a6cc133hIsuUFCSCEkq65yOFbrCvk.html
NO we comment b4 watching
Gas, when the power goes out, turn on generator I have hot shower. And a gas range that cooks my food. Growing up, power always went out up in TIM BUCK TOO.
I watched the whole thing. Gas appliances have been demonized recently, but I find it interesting that people migrating to your area are that afraid of gas.
My sister and her husband recently remodeled their kitchen. All the new gas stoves required electricity for the controls to operate, and power outages are an issue for them. They bought a fully refurbished gas stove from the '50s that requires no electricity. It works (and looks) great!
They are also on their 55th booster shot.
I was starting to wonder why you was letting the valve drippy drip drip and the plumbing being kind of wank lol but it's getting ripped out so that makes sense. Looking forward to more on this project.
I love gas appliances. Water heater, furnace, stove ALL GAS!
When you live in the hurricane zone, you will appreciate those gas lines that are buried beneath the ground and will almost always be available.
All my appliances are gas. Saves me a ton on my electric bill.
I prefer the gas
Nothing better than fire for heat.
Electricity is not green if it's created by burning fossil fuel, like all power companies do.
Where I live, wind + solar generate 25%. Nuclear represents another 20%. Fossil fuels will probably be less than 50% within a few more years. And yes, I'm in the USA, and our electricity is also cheaper than the average price in the USA.
"Green" is all relative. Gas to your house is incredibly leaky - many families leak more than they burn! Utilities are working to move to renewables, and we should all be thinking of ways to make our homes more efficient in the first place.
not in other countries....
@@scottperezfox😂 just curious how gas is leaky? Leak tests are performed and must pass before gas service is supplied to the home. Most leaks occur when homeowners or contractors alter, change or damage lines or appliances and do not do a leak check to ensure the integrity of the gas system was not compromised.
😂😂 killing me with that title
Same with me. I can only assume that it's sarcastic
Way to start out the video giving me a heart attack @ 0:35! I was just waiting for that CPVC to shatter when you turned the water off!
I prefer the gas services over electric.
I've lived with both. Gas is the way to go in my opinion. You have hot water when the power is out and typically cheaper to run and lasts longer. Ease of install definitely goes to electric though.
Our utility company is still offering customers a rebate for converting major appliances to gas. We were thinking of converting our 20-year-old electric water heater to gas, but when it went out last year, we just replaced it with another electric unit because we wanted hot water sooner rather than later.
Our plumber drained the old water heater through a hose to the outdoors, since we don't have a floor drain. But that didn't get all the water. Before hauling the old unit away, he broke the clogged drain valve off so the rest of the water would drain.
Heat pump water heater owner here. It's paying for itself in savings, and doubles as a free dehumidifyer.
I'm a gas water heater man and gas heater. Power went out for 2 days in the winter. My neighbor had electric everything and they had a stay with me because they didn't have heat or hot water lol
Almost feel like you’re trolling the plumbers by putting red PEX on the cold supply and blue PEX on the hot supply. Typical handy man craftsmanship.
I don't know how you could be scared of gas when you got sharkbites in there, only a matter of hours before they cause the entire house to explode
Only thing worse would be propress !
I have a ryobi pump I use to drain hot water heaters, pulls the water out a little quicker
Honestly I’d call that a hack job, but to each their own.
Temporary. Cheap fix while updating.
I remember my friend getting a new flat with an electric water heater in the eighties, his first and subsequent electric bill was over £200. He said was there anything that could be done as it was costing so much, he said he could not afford new central heating. I said I could fit a new gas boiler but only use the water heating side and when he saved up enough I would fit the rest of the system On his first bill using the gas boiler it was down to £50 for the month for the electric and £30 for the gas and thanked me for saving him a lot of money. He rang about a week after the this bill and said he had the power company come around to check why the electric bill had dropped so much, believing he was tampering with the meter told them why, they still replaced the electric meter and where going to test it. never heard anything back from them.
That's a 150 Pound difference. The average UK electric rate in 1989 was 8.2c/KWH. That would mean they used 1829 fewer KWH for that month, or about 61 KWH less per day. Assuming a 80 Degree F raise in temp (60 to 140F), it takes 0.195Kwh per gallon to raise the temperature of the water. Therefore 1829/.195 means they heated 9379 gallons of water in a 30 day cycle or 312 gallons of water a day, and a typical British water heater has a 50 gallon capacity. No wonder they had a high electric bill, they were showering 7 hours a day.
Gas bad for the environment... how do they make electricity... burn gas.
And coal, u know that clean burning fuel 😂
Yes a Cogen uses steam heated by natural gas to turn a turbine to generate electricity, one down the street I worked on.
Environmental cultists dont use logic though, only feelings and the carbon hoax
Hydroelectric....
No way?!??!
Green initiatives are in California.
LETS GO BRANDON!!!!
The ending was the best part 😂
nah, give me gas appliances all day over electric. who knows, maybe electric is better, but i grew up with gas being better so that's my bias
Gas works during power outages so that's a plus!
@@jaredhammonds8255A lot of furnaces, stoves, and hot water heaters require electricity to run. Many gas companies will also switch off the gas to neighborhoods with no electricity, especially after a storm, for fear of arcs when they come back on. If there are any leaks, it can lead to explosions and further outages.
But you're right, I suppose you can light the pilot on your stove manually with matches, or go outside for a BBQ. Seen both come in clutch during outages.
Ignorance is bliss
Grrrreat video! Im looking forward for this series! May sound crazy but I have both, a gas and an electric. The electric is first in line to preheat the water to about 90 deg. The gas then takes it to 140. Both are 50 gals and I put in a pressure pump between them to boost it up to 55psi. Its great to never run out of hot water.
We want to see all the projects you've discussed here. Always great content! Thank you!
We're taking our chimney for gas exhaust out as well -- the chimney above the roof was in terrible shape and was about to crumble over -- and we're actually putting the money into moving to all-electric instead of rebuilding the chimney. I'm looking forward to having solar + battery installed next year and being less dependent on large corporations for my power and operation.
Soylent Green IS PEOPLE!!!
I live in the SF Bay Area. The War on Combustion is all too real. Cigarettes, engines, stoves, water heaters, furnaces, bonfires, fireworks. Why are they so butt hurt by combustion? Why do they worship batteries and spinning magnets?
Big project. Looking forward to watching it
California here. Sometimes I run my generator in the yard just because I like the sound.
Why didn’t you extend the TPV (on top of the water heater) to 2”-6” from the floor or to a floor drain?
Because he's just a handy man not a plumbet
I love❤❤❤ your playlists. They help me get caught up more easily.
No expansion tank required by code out where you are?
New bread = Snowflake. They've bought it hook, line and sinker.
Everyone, hes clearly trolling, come on now. Take it easy on him.
Plus you can make any water heater a smart water heater for less than 20 bucks
Apologies if I jump to conclusion. I didn't bother watching the video after your title, but if you think that's the case, that's what sets plumbers and handyman apart
You probably should watch videos that you comment on.
@@TheHandyman1 I agree, but not a fan of click bait
What’s your advice? 1998 tract home built with cpvc. Seems like it’s mostly ok if you don’t touch it but supposedly it can get real fragile. I’m thinking I’m gonna have to keep replacing it all with pex…
3 neighbors have had issues with it in the past couple years: one was turning off a toilet angle valve, one was removing a vanity sink line and it broke a joint way up in the ceiling, and another had a joint crack in the crawl space during snowstorm… but I’m hanging on so far…. Rip it all out?
Not a matter of if it breaks, but when…
Resistance heat is fine if you don't mind massive bills slow recovery time. I have a tankless on my wall it cost $20 a year to run and never ever runs out of hot water. I paid $200 for it on fb marketplace.
Changed mine here in Florida and it was so full of minerals it wouldn't drain. Had to drag the monster outta the garage full.
ive learned something, nice. obviously im not a plumber , just a certified electrician. no intention of ever doing any plumbing,.
so..now am i gonna start plumbing tomorrow> >? lmfao, obviously no. idiots that think they can just by watching a video from a "handyman" ....[shakes head]
I can't even finish watching this. At least he capped the gas line. Electric takes more more to heat than gas.
Take more what, time?
The balls on this man, he just stared at the CPVC and dared it to break lol 😂
Natural gas is clean resource also when power goes out you can still cook and heat water.
why didnt u install the new hybrid tank use hardly any electricity heat pump tank
Next time have the orange store deliver it to the basement for you and pass the delivery charge to the customer 😂.
He would rather pass the delivery charge to the customer & do it himself 😅
Not even a heat pump water heater, sigh.
Gas water heaters recover way faster than electric water heaters!!!
Ok Handy, why did you use red pex for the cold side input and blue pex for the hot side outlet? Oh, and what about the pressure and temp relief valve? I’m not sure going electric is any greener or cheaper than gas. Maybe you have an abundance of free solar panels on this house?
If you can eliminate the chimney and not pull cold make up air into the house - ele water tank can be better ( depends on rates ). Best is heat pump water heater.
The EnergyStar sticker is amusing.
Good looking ride Mr Handyman!
Gas is way better. Heats water quicker. If you lose power, you will still have hot water with a gas water heater. With electric, that water will be luke warm in a day. A lot of people don't know that
Definitely keep that quality gate valve. They're the best! 😉😁
Just like on TV Handyman picks an easy install location. 😂
That end scene😂
I am curious if older homes with chimneys ever cause structural issues with the framing when removing them as it may(?) have been incorporated as a structured element
Yuck was that CPVC? That stuff scares me. Maybe I should watch the whole video before hitting the comment section 😂 Glad its coming out.
I want to see the chimney removal. I might have to do same on my house.
I live in Cincinnati and the winters here are cold. My street is all electric. They never ran gas lines in the late 70's so no one has gas. My electric heat pump is always running in the winter and after my kids shower the water never feels hot enough so I am always yelling at them to hurry up and get out. I hate it and wish i never got it. I even have looked into what they do in the country and just have a natural gas tank installed on the property and change it all over to gas.
What part of the country are you in? My heat pump has many settings that uses an element if needed, but I rarely need it in my climate.
*Won't someone think of the Carbons*
A 4500 watt electric heater is half the power of a 30,000 btu gas heater. So it takes twice as long to get got water back.
It's too clean down there. Gotta be some Gremlins hiding somewhere.
Wait you have boots on where have i been 😂
I wish i had gas appliances! We're just crossing our fingers we don't have a bad snow storm that knocks out the power until we can get a generator.
Liberal!
Is that code no conduit on the wires and not secured?
I was going to mention that I thought the unit needed to be off the ground, but then you said it was a temp position.
It doesn't need to be off the ground.
Lol no one watched the whole thing. He said why he did it this way. If anyone knows the Handyman they know he doesn’t do things half ass.
an electric water heater is more expensive to run......unless you have solar to offset this. I have installed solar and am now enjoying my investment. I have mine set up so if the grid goes down i still have power to run my essentials. As it is now i bank the money that the system saves me each month.
Nice new Nick's boots!
JK boots
Hay Handyman! I love those boots. What brand are they?I guess they never seen electrical lines catch a house on fire!
love the chanel. that sir is a working water heater. I can't say much more than that. I wish you had done it to code.
just an FYI, those sharkbite fittings for the water heater are garbage. i had 2 corrode near the swivel. i remade it with pex, been fine ever since.
did they leak or just surface corrosion? the sb flex is nice at the upper connection area where you can't do straight connections to tank.
I really hope the title is click-sarcasm. We agree on so much and then you drop this electric>gas bomb. Yes, I watched the whole video between checking game scores.
Now its going to be 80 bucks a month for hot water rather than 20.00
I didn’t hear how much it costs for the electric green tank? I’d be worried about the power draw from them, and the effects on other high power items like microwaves, washer and dryers, hot tubs etc while working on the same intervals
I just had my 18yr old (sweet👌) gas 50g hot water changed out for a 60g and it cost $2800 🇨🇦ian ..cause I don’t do gas myself lol
Natural gas is absolutely not bad for the environment.
Am I crazy the hot and cold outlet and inlet are connected opposite cold on the right?
I switched the colors. Everything is hooked up correctly
Handyman, I think I am going to go ahead and comment my complaints with your next 2 videos even though I haven't watched them yet😆
Its seems that's how it works these days.
My electric water heater literally crapped out 2 days ago lol
What boots are those?
I heard for a family gas is better and more heat than electric which is better for single person a couple who dont use much heated water .
You Broncos fan?
I just had gas setvices brought to my 40 year old house. Electric is just to expensive and not efficient on my area of the US
"Gas is bad for the environment" but that electric heater is going to use more energy from a coal fired power plant. What a joke
colors are wrong lol i was asked on my last install if it mattered haha
If a furnace is going in couldn’t the gas water heater vent the same place the new furnace does ?
In my market electric costs more than gas. And of course gas recovers faster than electric.
CPVC is da debil !
I never unbox until I have it in the basement hell slide it down the stairs in the box
The only way you saving money going from gas to electric is if you have a ton of solar panels on your roof
Gas only
Will be interesting...H..MAN
Seems a lot of meat puppets come out when this topic comes up, the you can’t tell me what to do, ego driven type. I prefer electric, but I have enough solar to support the all the electric house usage and charge two vehicles. I’m in California so having gas lines in your home in a area that has earth quakes is not really a good idea, history has proven that out. Do what ever you want, no one is coming for your cook top, relax.
woke
Gas is the cheapest and cleanest form of energy, just fyi!
He knows, he just does what the customer wants. He knows he will be in there after winter to put the gas back in. They will complain about how long they have to wait between showers for it to get hot. Laughing all the way to the bank!
Gas is the future, guess what most garbage zones use to incinerate garbage? Guess what power stations use? Always makes me smile when people switch to more expensive electric to make my own gas bill lower/cheaper. Tree huggers are great! :D
Until it runs out.... How can something be the future if you can't make any more of it lol. Great vision
Got yourself some old pipes there handy. Did the gas tank give up the ghost or customer go crazy on you about gas? HandyOn
Electricity is the most inefficient way to make heat and by far, the most expensive. The only solid reasoning I see to doing this is if you're installing an oversized solar power system and expect a net zero power bill.......eventually.
electric induction furnaces melt metal
@@walnutcontractors5661 At a MASSIVE cost. Did you read the post or does your comprehension suck?
GOING GREEN OR ELECTRIC ONLY MAKES CHINA RICHER
Please stop using gas to run electric generators' during a power outage
Bloody freaking legend 👏 full sending never lifting 😏🤙mobbin deep 🙌 Aussie! Aussie!
Your electric water heater is burning almost three times more gas than my gas water heater does.
I thought he was swapping out a gas water heater with an electric heat pump one. This is just a normal electric water heater. Better to not have done the swap.
Well, I hope they don't fart in their electric house!
Why is gas bad?
its not. i think he’s trolling
Gas is more energy efficient.
It is not. www.energystar.gov/products/water_heaters/residential_water_heaters_key_product_criteria
