- Built between 1867 -1880. This Fort had two guns facing inland, and two facing to sea.
This Fort can only be accessed on foot on the very lowest big spring tides of the year..
The smallest of the four Palmerston sea forts built in the eastern Solent to protect against the threat of French invasion from Louis Napoleon III. ( Something that never eventually happened.)
The Forts were later used for defence in the World Wars, although the heavier armaments proved unpopular with local householders due to the concussion breaking windows during firing practice. Subsequently their main useful role has been as navigational lighthouses.
Excellent video and the music suited it. I've been on Spitbank Fort and had a cuppa and a sandwich :) I think that one was sold for just over a £million some years ago and one of the others has been turned into a luxury accommodation for rent? Thanks for showing us around. Cheers.........Les
+fepowson Me to, i visited Spitbank Fort many years back, must have been sometime in the eighties. A cuppa and a sandwich and a tour around the fort, including walking around the passage way that runs all around between the outer wall and inner walls.
100SteveB Exactly the same, we did too, The guy led the visitors that wanted to around the inner wall like you said, he gave us candle light, I think it was the owner and his wife that invited us in. I know the guy was really interested in architecture. It was a good couple of hours. Cheers......Les
I love the music you choose to go with your videos. I have stayed here twice recently and sat on the seashore looking at the fort out to sea wishing I could have a walk round it! I knew that there was only a certain time of the year you can do it, but only you local guys seem to know when that is! Thanks for posting it....I love the view back to the shore once you have circled it!
Thanks for the comment Judy. :-)There is indeed a walk out to the fort once a year, but it's actually accessible on a number of dates throughout the year.Only problem with this video was that it jiggled and shook a lot, so I had to try and get it smoothed out, which resulted in making it look a bit warpy here & there. If you're ever planning a trip over I'll happily look at the tides for you to see if it would be doable.Just give a shout. :-)
Great video, looks like a great location :) need a drone to get some over head shots of it :)
Great upload, those blocks must weigh half ton each, built to last.
Take a grappling hook next time and scale the walls, would like to see what it's like inside the place, , awesome upload.
Cheers matey.
It's all sealed up well on top though..
Mate had a look.. 😉
+Isle Of Wight Alternative Attractions that's a shame it should be open to all who would like to look around it, and mabe open as a cafe for tea and egg and cress sandwiches.
