  • Hi friends! WOWWWWW wow wow wow. This was a very challenging time for me. Enduring a health crisis and my father's passing while painting an amazingly, epic outdoor mural was...a roller coaster. Truthfully, this video was difficult for me to edit as well. I wanted the focus of the video to be about the mural and the process, but you know I always let y'all in on what is happening in my life. Regardless, I hope you enjoy seeing me paint another outdoor mural.

    I thought I was just watching a video about an artist painting a mural and it turned out to be about pushing through the adversity of chronic illness and grief. I'm sorry for the loss of your father. Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your journey with us. My favorite part of the mural is the leopard print design.

    The preparation that does into a mural is more extensive than I could ever have imagined. I am so happy that you had an outlet while dealing with the loss of your father so you didn’t have to be stuck in your grief (hope that makes sense). Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.

    Thank you for sharing your process it turned out amazing! I always wonder how the backend process happens with the client in terms of pricing and preparing paints and hidden costs of a project like this. Would love to see more of that side to the process!

    • @FionaCArt
      @FionaCArt  8 місяців тому

      Thank you for watching :) To be honest with many public art projects, there’s a set amount at the offset so when you apply you know what you’re getting into. If you look up “mural RFP” or “mural RFQ” you may see some examples of what a client is looking for and budget. It can be all over the place though. Just depends where it is and who is funding it. If it’s for a private client, then you have a bit more negotiating when it comes to pricing.
      With that said, I plan to do a video on my mural supplies and I can get into the process more :)

    Fiona my deepest condolences on your and your families lost....i empathize with your joyful time but dealing also with great sadness at same time, i was in a similar situation 18 years ago just adopted our daughter and my dad had past away one week later so i was on a emotional rollercoaster for a soild year after he past away i like to think that god gave me my daughter as something tangibleto immerse my self in to offset the lose of my dad who was a intergral part of my life... my mother in law past away from cancer just this past sunday she was 60ish and she live her life her way also and was a retired police officer she became a police officer in her late thirties/40ish, i was proud of her she ran circles around younger guys during training.. your mural is so beautiful i hope someday i can get my picture taken in front of it...also are you gonna take photo of it and sell?? Id like one if you do decide to do a print version of this mural.... just a idea at xmas time you should do a small calander of your paintings to sell....Id title this mural:. dads love.....many art blessings of compassion kindness empathy and love ....your mural is beautiful i like all of it the most is the signs( different symbols) areas the colors fade a little bit it and i like that look as you can see the color blue behind the symbols and other existing background colors it makes you look a bit longer in those symbol areas, i like the textures of the paint lines also how the paint is thick in one area but another area it is thinner does that make sense? Its multi facet yumminess to look at with the counterbalances of lines curves circles dots and the color combinations.... it make me smile and it inspires me to do my freestyle mandalas dotting on rocks ...mikelle art mom 🎨👩‍🎨✍

      Thank you as always for the thoughtful comment, Mikelle 💕 I’m so very sorry about your MIL passing 😔 Cancer is horrible. I wish there were better words of comfort I could give, but I’m also still very much grieving…With that said, she sounds like she was really awesome. Becoming a police officer at 40 is no joke!
      I wasn’t planning on doing any prints since the mural was designed after an original canvas I sold. I try not to do prints of such things because I want the collector to know they have an original. BUT I do want to create some prints and such for the holiday shop this year! So stay tuned xx

      Sorry to hear about your father Fiona. I lost my son Jamie seven months ago, my heart is broken, there are no words that can console the loss of those we love so deeply. I'm making a small memorial garden in his honour and I was looking for tutorials on how to do a mural as a back drop, it will be behind his bench seat. As it's a rental, , I can't paint the fence, so I thought I'd do it on a tarp, your mural gave me inspiration. As I'm not artistic it would have to be simple, just wondered if painting on a tarp would work? Keep up the good work and all the best to you and your loved ones.❤️

      @eileenredfern2651 Eileen, I’m so very sorry for your loss. As you say, there’s no words that can console the loss of a loved one. With that said, I think it’s beautiful you’re creating a mural in your son’s honour. You can definitely paint on a tarp or piece of cloth then install it! Basic acrylics should work too since it’s a temporary install - I use exterior house paint for my murals but there’s a lot of fumes that come off them so I wouldn’t recommend it if you are painting the tarp indoors. Sending you big hugs! Best of luck with your project ❤️

    • @FionaCArt
      @FionaCArt  Рік тому

      I’m not exactly sure which specific brushes you are talking about, but overall I brought tons of different ones I like to use from my studio plus the arts council gave me some of theirs. So it was a mix and match. Ever in doubt, Home Depot or Lowe’s have some brushes for painting exterior murals!

    • @FionaCArt
      @FionaCArt  Рік тому +1

      I just use exterior house paint - typically flat finish. With exterior, it's good to know what type of surface you are painting on so you can tell the paint shop - they will recommend whats best. The "dotter" is just the end of a foam roller :) Thanks for watching!

      @@FionaCArt thanks for the info. My experience with the exterior paint is that it required layers of paint to make it opaque. Maybe because I got semigloss. I was told by another artist that I will have to varathane it 3-4 coats.

    Hi. I'm planning an outdoor mural on a concrete wall that has been painted a couple years ago. A flat white. I see that paint is already chipping off. What can I do to prepare it for a mural and what paint should I use for the mural itself?

    • @FionaCArt
      @FionaCArt  Рік тому

      Hi Christine! Congratulations on the mural! I would recommend power washing it first if possible to remove any of the paint chipping then do a layer of primer. You can find them at most paint stores or Home Depot/Lowe’s - just ask in the paint department and let them know it’s for an exterior concrete wall. Primer tends to be grey (although it can be white) and is a good base for the exterior paint to stick to. For the mural itself, it depends on your budget, but definitely use exterior paint and choose a finish you like. I personally like a matte finish if it’s available because once I seal my murals with vandlguard that gives it a satin-like finish. But if you prefer glossy, it’s up to you. Just be mindful that anything super glossy on outdoor murals will reflect quite a bit. Hope this helps :) good luck!!

So in general, I’ve been able to raise prices as I’ve received more opportunities. When I do proposals now, I have a page with a breakdown of pricing that includes my Artist fee, my assistants fee, cost for any ladders/scaffolding, paint/brushes/trays/dropcloths, travel/accommodation (if applicable), cost for sealing, etc. Hope this helps!
