  • In this episode I discuss the various Arpeggio modes as originally implemented in the Jupiter-8. (There is a separate Sequencer component but we'll deal with that separately.)

The Roland Jupiter-8 was in production between 1981 and 1985, and was Roland's flagship product of the time. Its incredibly rich, deep tone and flexible modulation options made it a favourite of top-tier musicians, and to this day remains one of the most sought-after vintage synths in existence.
In this tutorial series we'll deconstruct Arturia's magnificent reconstruction of this classic synth.
    About me:
My name is Anthony Chisnall. I'm a musician & songwriter.
    My channel is these things:
    1. A place to share my songs - via various 'Back on Track' video series - in which you'll see each song idea evolve step-by-step, with me (hopefully!) improving my song-writing skills as we go.
    2. An outlet for me to discuss all things musical - including technical break-downs of software and tools that I use, as well as more wide-ranging discussions of topics that interest me.
I play the guitar (electric, acoustic, and bass), and record all of my own synth-based sounds myself too, but I can't sing very well (huge understatement!), and so my wife, Pauline, who has a lovely singing voice, has come to my rescue. You'll hear her on all of my songs.
All of my music is written in Steinberg's Cubase.
I try very hard to make my videos PRACTICAL and no-nonsense - if I don't use a feature, I'm not going to waste your time trying to sound like an expert on it! This is the stuff I use day-to-day, so I think that's also what you'd like to hear me talking about.

Version 4 has differences with it's Arpeggio module compared to the version you're using in this tutorial. There is an INC mode that is basically UP & DOWN mode except that it repeats the top and bottom notes twice. EXC mode is just like UP & DOWN, only playing the top and bottom notes once. ORD plays in the order one presses the notes down, and REV plays in the reverse direction of the order one presses the notes down. Instead of INT and EXT to adjust the Arpeggio module's Rate, it has Hz and SYNC, which reads in divisions of Bars (1/4th, 1/8th, 1/16th) instead of divisions of tempo (tempo*1/4, tempo *1/8th, tempo*1/16th I think is how it says it). Also all of the Arpeggio module's functions in Version 4 are in one panel.

Well, that's progress for you :) The Jupiter's just gonna have to jolly-well wait its turn in the queue to get revisited though :)
The new version does look mighty sweet... although I kinda had a soft spot for the silliness of the Galaxy module, so I can see me letting V3 hang around for a while :)

Do you know if the ‘random’ sequence of notes in the arp is the same as the Roland Jupiter 8? I’m trying to recreate Hungry Like The Wolf, Duranx2.

How do you get the app to start I have everything done but I cant fig out howq to start the
    sequence so it repeats automatically?

Automatic repeat is called "Hold". It's in the Voice Assign section.

@@OneManAndHisSongs ty really appreciate you answering my question . I'm pretty new to keyboard playing please forgive my ignorance. When I hit the hold button it doesnt play the sequence correctly. It just holds every note continously

What did they do to the arpeggiator in V4? When synced and DAW (Cubase 11 Pro) is playing back it doesn't even retrigger of grid. It's hard synced to the grid, that you chose with the rate knob. If you want to play a 8th dotted arpeggio but start on the second quarter of the measure it won't even play until it's locked on to a dotted value of the measure... it only retriggers off grid, when the DAW is not playing. then it works just fine. unusable. In V3 it works just fine all the time. The arpeggio retriggers everytime you hit notes, even when the daw is playing back... Is it just me or has anybody else noticed? Same thing for the Jun-6 and the CZ.

Yes, that's the behaviour for me too. I don't know why they chose to implement a locked sync - seems like an option to decouple would solve the problem.

I like your videos. but please can you match your voice with music. I mean the music is too loud so I have to increase and decrease the volume.
    Thanks ...👍🍻

You're absolutely right, I did get the balance wrong in this video - sorry. I've had a review of my default volume settings and will try to ensure they're mixed better in future.
