we went thru the same thing with my two parents, mom had parkinsons and needed someone with her, we got her a home help who was watching her, administering her help to bathroom, meals, meds. mom wanted to be at home, til the last day where she spent in hospital. dad put himself into assisted living and his SS payments went to it, plus as time went by, my husband and i paid any residuals, the last weeks he went into convalescent care. at this point even for myself i'd like to be seen to in my home with someone who can help my husband with me in the daily routines. with dementia, you would need someone who is willing to work with it. all in all its cheaper than 12k a month and you can be sure your parent is safe and surrounded by their own familiar environment. your bidenomics at work, they don't give a dam about seniors.
I have a friend living in a Sacramento area nursing home. MediCal pays over $18k/month for him to be there and the food is disgusting. The kitchen keeps cutting the food budget even with current inflation. You'd think for that kind of money they could serve something besides boiled chicken & rice or ground turkey tacos.
