This is one of those things that's interesting so far, but a little sad: the tourney scene *mostly* ends up with one of the big 3, and really more like big 2: Pika EX and Mewtwo EX (Charizard EX being the other, but it's been losing representation a bit). It might either be that things shift when new cards are released, or the meta just needs time to evolve and needs bold competitors who go outside the big 3/2. Thanks for viewing!

Pocket is a way simpler version of the actual TCG so I would say in pocket it's a lot more based on luck. Like most card games TCG is based on luck too but there's a lot of tough decisions you have to make since the decks and gameplay are able a lot more complex.
Sorry by TCG I'm referring to Pokemon TCG. In regards to other card games I don't really know but I did try Magic once and it seems the same way. There always a luck component but it's a lot more complex and there's a lot of decision making. But it's actually funny because the only magic game I played I got extremely lucky and beat the guy teaching me. Granted he was helping but not letting me win
In general they aren’t, only certain facets, like coin flipping, would have the luck element (though I suppose you can also draw a lucky or unlucky hand, but that’s less of a factor for most other TCG), but none of them will be like Pokemon TCG Pocket in this regard. While I think some of this will be mitigated once Pocket releases more cards and more features, I think it will be more luck-based compared to others simply because it’s only 20 cards, 3 prize points for victory, and more quick/streamlined overall, so that just kinda leaves it vulnerable to those luck-based mechanics. It’s still incredibly fun and still can be altered by players’ choices!
@@PokemonMasterKendo oh I agree, I still have a lot of fun playing this game. I’m more into collecting cards but I’ve noticed even though my favorite pokemon type is grass, I literally get steam rolled most of my games playing the venusaur ex deck cause it takes too long to evolve 💀 so I had to switch to the mewtwo ex or starmie ex meta builds and now I win more games. It’s not as satisfying because I don’t get to play my favorite pokemon cards, but hopefully they bring out more features and cards in the future that’ll mitigate the current meta builds.
I run both a Jynx and a Slowbro in my varient. Jynx can apply early pressure that we've seen her apply. While Slowbro can be a decent Tank, providing time to power up Mewtwo to 3+ Energy or acting as an alternate wincon. Not only do these 2 (3) additions take some pressure off of Mewtwo, it is also a soft defense against Red Cards. If I already have a Jynx, Slowbro and Mewtwo on turn 3/4, I'm less worried about getting Gardevoir. While I may not have her to act as a battery, sacrificing Jynx and/or Slowbro gives me time to get those Energy from stalling the 2-4 turns it takes to knock them out. I think people rushed too much to try and find the fastest, most optimized decks, leading them to overshoot the mark. In the case of Mewtwo Ramp, there really are not enough good Trainer cards to be running 12, in my opinion. I don't rate Red Card as being very good. At least, not right now. One reason why I do not think so is how limited the deck sizes are. The first player can easily reduce their remaining deck size from 16 to 12 by dropping 2 Pokeballs and then an Oak. All 4 of those cards can, usually be played, leaving the player with the original 0-3 cards in their hand. That leaves the best case scenario for Player 2's Red Card to have an equal shuffle and draw. Of course, that's best case scenario, but it's a scenario I have had play out many times. Being Red Carded has never cost me a match, but it has won me matches. Same results many times I have tried Red Carding my opponent. It's use either didn't matter or was a detriment to the one who used it. I use 2 Oaks, 2 Giovanni, 2 Sabrina, 2 Pokeball and 1 X Speed. The only hyperaggro thing I do os not use potions. I'd rather be able to eek out a little more damage with Giovanni where I need it or get an advantageous switch with Sabrina and/or X Speed. It's still fast. It's consistent and it can beat WAK, despite the weakness damage and chicanery.
these guys are way luckier then skilled, like fr, when i see these matches i dont feel like theyre particularry good, the luck part is just too important here
I think RNGesus still reigns supreme with not only this meta, but many of the typical “best” cards used. Fortunately more will be released, but the other good news is that the competitors will evolve with time, especially since there are tournaments every week
If the guy with the Mewtwo deck brought out ralts instead of Mewtwo, he could have used it to buy him some time. The ralts takes the hit but he brings Mewtwo out with two energy and could have had a chance at taking out Pikachu in two hits. Instead he brought out Mewtwo first, let him take a hit, then wasted a retreat to bring ralts out when he could have just done it in the first place. Well played by both.
That’s interesting, because Pocket put this principle into the forefront majorly, where one move can be the difference. Thanks for the analysis and thanks for viewing!
Can't either way. Shiba couldn't one shot the Mewtwo as he only would have 2 energy after Pikachu one shot the ralts. Then he poke for 50, Pikachu atk for 90, next turn Mewtwo only has 3 energy while shiba has no point yet, and another Pikachu already sitting in bench waiting. Just unfortunate opening hand from shiba.

If the game gets some balance patchs i would love to see a gardevoir nerf/rework for it to be like magneton(u get a extra energy but only for itself) the mewtwo combo is literally unfair u can one shot almost all cards every turn(if u do a magneton + raichu with surge it do the same thing almost but no one uses it cuz mewtwo deck is 900000 times stronger)
What's interesting is that even with all the above, usually Pikachu EX decks are still taking that first place spot (and a large representation of the Top 8 decks) in tournaments across the board for the most part. But ultimately, TCG Pocket being digital *does mean* they COULD make balance changes to specific cards & whatnot, but something inside me just feels & believes they *won't* do any editing of the actual cards, but instead go the route of releasing new cards that either act more like direct counters *or* just evolve the meta strategies to allow for more viable options than just Pikachu EX and Mewtwo EX decks that we currently see. They could also do mini-Promo drops kinda like they have with the Lapras EX promos event, and those could be some faster ways to inject change into an over-reaching meta. Thanks so much for the comment and for viewing!
Seems several others noticed it too! It’s too bad, but hey, Pocket can often come down to one choice move, when it isn’t solely the luck of the coin! Thanks for viewing
@PokemonMasterKendo yeah I mean the game is mostly luck based, so it’s quite disappointing to see an advantage thrown away like that, especially in a tournament setting. must’ve been the nerves. Shiba completely disregarded the Giovanni and potion he had in his hands in that moment.

Damn. Tilting would have won if he sacked his Mewtwo after dealing 50 and followed up with Jynx to hit for 90. Assuming Saitama took the bait and decided to kill the Mewtwo and didnt have a potion, Jynx could have revenge KOd.
Very risky as Saitama had decent number of cards in his hand. Pretty high chance one of em would be potion. Plus Saitama can play around it easily with switching Zapdos to zebra and one shot the Jynx lol. And Mewtwo doesn't have enough energy to one shot zebra after, can just retreat zebra again then bring Zapdos. Ggs either way.
@@invertbrid 10:35 is definitely a misplay. Saitama actually needs 2 potions in his hand to survive the Jynx hit because Shiba actually has a Giovanni in his hand meaning Jynx will be able to hit for 100 in the next turn. Plus it’s just obvious that using 2 energy for a retreat there just leads to an inevitable loss, you lose all of your momentum and initiative and give up any chance of ever killing the zapdos. Sacrificing mewtwo and playing for 100dmg Jynx has a much higher probability of winning. Additionally, you’re wrong about the Zebstrika swap because Shiba had a potion in his hand, which he could’ve used on the Jynx to stop the Zebstrika from one shotting the Jynx. If this happens, Shiba actually has an advantage at this point and a high likelihood of winning. The only counter-play is for Saitama to have a Giovanni of his own to enable his Zebstrika to one shot the Jynx. Essentially Shiba wins with optimal play as long as Saitama does not have 2 health potions or a Giovanni. We can conclude that retreating Mewtwo is a MAJOR mistake probably made as a result of panic and irrational thinking, which threw away a potential advantage and completely lost the game.
I think something like that might be a specific event one day, tbh! I know you're talking hypothetically, but they could totally have PvP battle-related events where they do something akin tot his :)
I want to make sure it’s clear from the title (and commentary) that these are the Top 2 (best) competitors’ decks from that tournament specifically. Not a claim on best decks of all time or anything of the sort
Not that I think it's outside the realm of possibilities since this is an app/digital (unlike physical TCG), but I just really don't see them changing cards ever. Just something inside me feels that way; but I think what they *will* do is occasionally release promo cards or one-off types of deals that counter or answer to the Big 3 or Big 2 in the meta as time goes on...and then of course, the regular release of new expansions and all that, since those new expansions will likely shake up the meta every time. Thanks for viewing!
They won’t nerf cards they just power creep em which means they’ll add new cards with better stats or effects and the new cards will balance out the old ones
Unfortunately I worry about that for the time being, but I know there will be other expansions down the line... ultimately, I bet there are other decks that are currently viable, but people see a consistent trend across all the tourneys right now where the Top 8/Top 6 decks are either Pika EX or Mewtwo EX

this game is great! if you can afford to keep up with the meta for most people though online battles are unplayable when you have to go up against someone whos spent 300$
I definitely see the pay-to-*WIN* aspect, but at least not pay-to-play. There's a degree of being able to open your daily packs every single day and doing Wonder Picks as you can that will allow you to at least compete a bit after maybe the first week has elapsed. But obviously it's an uphill fight that way, but I myself am free to play other than what the Pokemon Company gifted me!!! Thanks for viewing
@@PokemonMasterKendo I've played for roughly a week and have open numerous packs and while I have a few decks I only have about 400+ cards to work with being free 2 play the complaint isn't that you have to pay to play however you actually do in any kind of competitive format because there are tons of people with over 1000+ cards that are able to create meta decks and you just don't stand a chance free packs are great but as someone who likes to actually play the tcg portion its virtually impossible right now and possibly the next few months to actually play outside of the offline tcg battles
@@meganrivers3982should’ve reset your account at the start to get some EXs you can build off of. Can’t really call it that P2W when most people don’t even have tournament level decks. How many people have you played using quadruple EXs? Battles are very much winnable with a somewhat decent deck and a little bit of skill. If you think this games P2W have you even ever played other mobile games before
Rng = beats everything
I think RNGesus still reigns supreme with not only this meta, but many of the typical “best” cards used. Fortunately more will be released, but the other good news is that the competitors will evolve with time, especially since there are tournaments every week
Imagine if they removed all Ex cards. How would people play then ? That's what they should do. Remove the Ex metas and let people start cooking.
I think something like that might be a specific event one day, tbh! I know you're talking hypothetically, but they could totally have PvP battle-related events where they do something akin tot his :)
I build my deck without ex and still can bet em
@@capturedbyote251 Yeah I'm really enjoying the Victreebel/Pidgeot combo and Arbok/Weezing combo :)
This is no way the best decks. My water deck I run is the best.
I want to make sure it’s clear from the title (and commentary) that these are the Top 2 (best) competitors’ decks from that tournament specifically. Not a claim on best decks of all time or anything of the sort
Auto win Mewtwo deck vs Auto win Pikachu deck 😂
Mewtwo is not autowin. No where near pikachu deck. Pikachu have no bad draws. Mewtwo has
Both lose to my Charizard deck lol
@@Odin_30 Either that or you outspeed with blaine/ninetails/rapidash
Both decks should also struggle hard vs weezing/arbok/koga
@ can happen but only good draws lol so basically 100 rounds vs pikachu your charizard stand no chance
@callmecheese4696 thats not my experience 👍🏻
At this point those card must get a nerf
Not that I think it's outside the realm of possibilities since this is an app/digital (unlike physical TCG), but I just really don't see them changing cards ever. Just something inside me feels that way; but I think what they *will* do is occasionally release promo cards or one-off types of deals that counter or answer to the Big 3 or Big 2 in the meta as time goes on...and then of course, the regular release of new expansions and all that, since those new expansions will likely shake up the meta every time. Thanks for viewing!
They won’t nerf cards they just power creep em which means they’ll add new cards with better stats or effects and the new cards will balance out the old ones
it becomes a boring game when there are just 2 viable decks 🥲
Unfortunately I worry about that for the time being, but I know there will be other expansions down the line... ultimately, I bet there are other decks that are currently viable, but people see a consistent trend across all the tourneys right now where the Top 8/Top 6 decks are either Pika EX or Mewtwo EX
