My first car was a 1981 280zx. Then I swapped the manual and the engine into a 1980 auto 280zx. Then bought 2 more zx's and swapped the engine and manual tranny into the 3rd. I love the 280zx. Cant wait to see what the final result will look like.

Being a 280zx owner since of 2012, and I was 15 at the time. I can tell you that you couldn't picked a better time to resto-mod a 280zx. It was only a matter of about 10 years ago that there was almost nothing in the market for the S130 chassis. The S30s were always the favorite child but I couldn't blame the Z community given for it's origin and race heritage but the 280zx was also a great successor to the S30 chassis model. Doing the powertrain swap is a jab to us purist people but I also don't blame you if you're looking to punch high HP numbers. Many will argue that the stock L28 can still make respectable power too, especially with todays ECU advancement and ProTuners being another direct source to keep the L28s alive and strong but to each of their own. It's your build so tailor it for yourself. Side note, the rear differential is STOUT, so to make your life easier if you didn't know. Buy a different internal carrier to have it LSD and convert the Half Shafts to CVs with companion flange adapters. The R180/200s are very capable of holding up to 500hp easily. I'm also In the works to bring my 280zx back to life. Been down since senior year of High School and I haven't been able to drive it again since sadly. Always remember!.....WE...ARRRRRE....DRIVEEEEEN!
😶 10 years ago was a perfect time to resto-mod a 280zx. Not so much now. They were much cheaper then. And so were parts. We still had Black Dragon Auto, which had almost anything and everything you needed for a 280z/280zx, but they went away in 2017 choosing to drop the Z line. There are still many vendors for the ZX chassis, but now those parts are way more expensive then they used to be, even for small items. In 20 years of owning Z's, I've only seen less and less availability and more and more inflation. As time goes on, more cars are crushed; more parts discontinued, and more demand for those parts to remain available, which leads to prices being jacked up. Its very sad. Get what you can now, while you still can.

2jz is too heavy and big of an engine for a beginner to put in a datsun. 1uz would be much better in every possible way, including price.
Not pushing for 1000hp. Car will be properly built to handle the power I want to build lol
