That sound you're hearing is an old rockabilly guitar trick. This is Johnny Cash on acoustic guitar with The Tennessee Two - Luther Perkins on electric guitar, and Marshall Grant on upright bass. That percussive sound you're hearing is two things: Marshall Grant playing "slap bass" on the upright; and a dollar bill slipped under the strings of John's guitar, mimicking a snare drum as it rattles with the vibrations of the strings. They sound like they have a drummer, but they wouldn't have one for another five years after this recording.
Thanks Joe. Great explanation there.
Exactly ✌️❤️
Thanks! I would have guessed someone was playing a washboard. It's a great sound.
Joe, you hit it out of the park! interesting explanation
Smart !
Its such a minimalist, bare-bones tune but its also so full of emotion. Cash was a treasure.
"bare-bones" yes but as Elon Musk says "The best part is no part".
Man In Black, Folsom Prison Blues r just 2 more Cash masterpieces. Love you guys ❤ stay safe
One of my favorites from Johnny Cash. Because your mine mine, I walk the line. One his most famous songs, "I Walk The Line" details Johnny Cash's values and lifestyle. It was a promise to remain faithful to his first wife, Vivian Liberto, while he was on the road.
Love all his songs. Sun records were his firsts
You need to watch the movie (Walk the Line) staring Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix about his life. Such an amazing movie!!
Brilliant movie 1 my favourite bio movies They both sing the songs themselves also
My absolute fav movie of all time!!!!
Love it
Yes
The movie "Walk the Line" with Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon is one of my favorites as well as the soundtrack that he and Reese did together.
The part that I liked is that there was no lip syncing in the movie. Both had to learn how to play an instrument and actually played it on screen. Both have surprisingly good voices. Made for a great movie. Much like Sissy Spacek in Coal Miners Daughter... another great film
@@TonyM1961 Absolutely! Coal Miner's Daughter is a classic!
@@dawncarpenter9869 I am pretty sure I have gotten on some folk's nerves by having it memorized (-;
Johnny Cash was a Legend very unique , he could take a guitar and captivate anyone ,I agree Folsom prison Blues ,Ring of Fire , should maybe be next to react to Jonny has so many gems . A Great story teller and activist . good vibes and much love. 🤗💗❤️
Love ya guys. You made me smile. Keep walking the line, Peace out.
Hey guys, please check out Johnny and his wife June Carter doing "Jackson" live! Really cute and fun. "Big River" is another great one
The different sound you heard is the customized guitar. He put a dollar bill underneath the strings about 3/4 way up the neck of the guitar. He said made a snare drum effect on song (s) that he did. "I Walk The Line" was one of them ! Thx and keep up the good reaction thing !
I've been listening to Johnny Cash talk nearly all my life.
Still waiting to hear him actually sing...
He was humming to get in key for the next line. He changed keys every time.
That other sound was Johnny "humming" real low and deep into the microphone. He always did that with this song. In fact, it is what I loved the most about it. He had that ability. I've never heard anyone else do it.
*Yes...I love the message in this one, and always have. It being "you're the one...and I won't cross the line, because your mine."*
Love your vibes.
Johnny composed this song in dedication to his wife Vivian.
While he was already kinda getting sweet on June!
@@loadedorygun No, June came on the scene much later --in the early 1960s. IWTL was released in May of 1956.
@@timcarr6401 they met backstage at the Opry right after this song was released, so yeah she wasn’t specifically the inspiration but she put the thought there early on. And of course he knew of her from listening on the radio as a kid. And she was touring around the same circuit he was (John was with Elvis ironically as i recall)
@@loadedorygun June got married in 1957. June and John were married in 1968. Even then Johnny wasn't faithful to June. I don't respect either one because of all their broken vows to several spouses.
Johnny was a troubled soul. He was super talented, but it makes me sad how he treated Vivian.
@@timcarr6401 you know what, people grow apart. I was married for 21 years. Then I was a long term relationship until he passed. I married a man 1 1/2 years ago and I’m in the midst of divorcing. He lied to me from the moment we got married and he physically threatened me. Although, I think I could take him in hand to hand combat situation (once a soldier always a soldier) He moves to slow and has no idea how to block. He doesn’t understand balance and a square center of gravity. (I could go on and on but I won’t.) I own a weapon he know longer has access to. I also have 3 sons he is terrified of after threatening me. This momma taught her boys to fight. One excelled at fighting and became a special forces airborne soldier in the Army, prior to ending his career in an IED incident in Afghanistan. Im over 50 and a veteran, I will not settle to live in a house where I am threatened. Plus my son lives with me, I would prefer him not to go back to prison. Life is to short to be unhappy.
Johnny said the hums weren't suppossed to be there, he did it to get the proper key, but he liked it so they kapt them in
That sound was Johnny cash humming. it’s sounds like a vibration his voice is so deep
With Johnny Cash, it's all about the voice.
I walk the line, refers to remaining faithful while on the road. Great song.
The key changes make this song unique.
That's the genius of the tune for me. It's like he's crooning his woman and proving the depths of his vocal talents.
You sounded pretty good B J now you can become a millionaire covering Johnny Cash songs ...Good luck !! Love you guys 💝
The humming between the verses made an unforgettable touch!
Another good reaction to one of the best. Johnny is one of my favorite artists.
Lol lol lol lol lol. Right on and you guys are so funny. Yeah man it's rare to hear somebody that is a true bass and become popular and that's what Johnny Cash did and you could also say Patsy Cline as a contralto. Which is one of the lowest registers a woman can sing in. Both of them slayed.. So glad you guys did this.
You get the impression that Sam Phillips didn't spend too much effort on Cash's early recordings for Sun. What it left us though was some truly beautiful unadulterated gems, this track being one of them.
He walked the line until he met June. But...he's human. And this is a great song.
Those first 3 chords are very recognizable and if your a country fan you instantly know it’s Walk The Line. It’s the same with Fulsom Prison Blues and about anything Alabama put out!! ❤️❤️❤️
As I recall this song was written and performed to quiet this wife, the mother of Rosanne Cash, but he couldn't stop with women on the road, particularly June Carter, whom he eventually married and recorded Jackson.
Elvis was backstage at a johnny concert one time and said that guy is going to be the biggest thing to hit the industry. 2 legend's.
This is the iconic johnny cash song
I love Johnny Cash, and love your reaction!
Johnny wrote this song for his first wife Vivian, whom they had 4 children. Vivian was black so the biggest country hit ever was written for a black woman. Vivian should be honored in the country hall of fame
Very true! I had forgotten about that. She was mixed. I believe her dad was white.
"Ring of Fire" kicks things up a bit. For humor try "Jackson" or "A Boy Named Sue." For social commentary, try "Man in Black" or "Folsom Prison Blues." If you want your heart broken, try "Hurt."
That is pure truth.
Love me some Johnny!!!!! Folsom Blues is good too.
There is a GREAT movie about Johnny Cash called "Walk The Line" from 2005 starring Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny and Reese Witherspoon as June Carter Cash. Joaquin Phoenix learned to play guitar for the movie and does all his own singing and sounds JUST like him. It's a really good movie worth watching perhaps even for your new movie reaction channel? Cheers.
His honesty and simplicity are touching. "Walk the Line" was a great bio pic, with Reese Witherspoon and Joaqim Phoenix, as Cash. Great reaction.
That sound was a drum being hit with a brush instead of a stick. Its used often in jazz.
YES HE DID!!YES HE DID!!High Five!
I won’t cheat or play around. I’ll walk the line because your mine and you are worth it the happiness I feel proves it’s true.
The sound mimics a train going down the tracks. This is a common and reoccurring sound in both old blues and old country songs.
Both poor blacks and poor whites knew about the train tracks it was a sound of their youth.
That train track sound the clicking was made by putting a playing card weaved through the strings of an acoustic guitar.
The other guitar part was Travis picking made famous by Merle Travis. The thumb alternates between the two bass notes of a chord and fingers play the higher notes of the chord.
The thumb is like the left hand of a piano player and the fingers are like the right hand.
Btw the same clicking sound was made the same way by The Bee Gees in jive talking
You done good, BJ---I loved it!! ❤️
I was a kid when this was a hit. I love this early Cash. Luther's Boogie. Get Rhythm. Give My Love To Rose. Hey Porter
BJ's got an awesome voice.
Great song. He walks the straight line. BJ ! You did great!
Always their sound is like a “train”
Very unique
Nice ✌️🎶
Man in black!! Great selection 👌 One of a kind!!
Johnny Cash is a legend.
Y'all need to do some Johnny Paycheck, you will love this dude. Take this job and shove it,Fifteen Beers, that is just a couple of great songs
Johnny Cash had a distinctive voice, but there are some other great basses in country music, for more of his music check out "Folsom Prison Blues" then react to Cash and Roy Clark duet of the same song. A great version but Roy totally changes it.
Another great Country Bass lead singer is Josh Turner. "Long Black Train", "Would You Go WIth Me", and "Your Man" are suggestions for great songs of his.
Get Rhythm, Ring of Fire, Jackson, and Folsom Prison Blues are worth watching also. Soundtrack versions are amazing.
pretty good Johnny Cash impersonation BJ!!
Asia, that sound you are referring to I believe is brushes used on the drums instead of sticks.
Johnny Cash.
An American Poet.
An American Treasure.
Amen.
Cash had a piece of paper between the strings to make a drum effect 🙂
Like that low bass check out home free. They're a total instrument free group that dude hit a very low F# they are awesome
Chukka-chuff,chukka-chuff, that’s a train friends!
He liked the sound of a snare drum he put a paper in his strings and made his own! 1956
He fought depression, bad marriage, drugs alcohol..June Carter made him a happy man straightened out and walked the line
The ‘chika’ sound you can hear is a washboard
Y’all sing better than my joyful noise. Please react to Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash.
That did sound like Johnny!
Josh turner and randy Travis also deep voices in country
He killed it! lol
Arkansas legend.
I think there was a snare drum being played with brushes in there!
Classic Johnny... Gotta love it.
Was also a 1970 Gregory Peck movie pretty good “I walk the line” song was used in that also , thanks again
I love this song. A little kid in maybe 65/66 with my dad in his truck with AM radio.
Probably a closed hi hat with brushes. Giving it that train shuttle. Maybe a kick drum too.
It’s a dollar bill stuck in the guitar strings that’s creating that sound, the paper and strings vibrating together when strummed. I don’t believe there is a drummer on this song.
Hey Asia, You need to give BJ a pen and paper. Let him write or both write few songs about how everything that is great about Your Marriage. Go to Nashville and let'm have it . This reminds me of a song of Johnny's who sings with his Wife June Carter. Could you react to ONE WAY RIDER to give us a sample ! I love this Channel, Thanks !
1st...and ❤ Johnny Cash....Thanks Guys!!!
Our pleasure!
If you want to hear a beautiful bass voice in country, also check out The Oakridge Boys, The Statler Brothers, and some of the other country groups.
Man in Black!!
You were talking Johnny's deep voice. You need to react to some Jim Reeves. That guy had a beautiful deep voice! Try listening to "He'll Have To Go".
This is a classic from Johnny Cash , real love story.
I saw a documentary about him - "Walk Hard" I think it was called.
BJ got that real-man voice. 👍
As a little bitty kid, I loved this song better that kiddy songs! Please, listen to The Wreck Of The Old 97 version on the album I Walk The Line and all other albums. The instrumental introduction is different.
Trace Adkins also has a deep country voice. Try "Honkeytonk Badonkadock" or "Hillbilly bone".
You got it BJ,and Asia.. lovelovelove ❤️✌🏻🌸
Fam! Great content (as usual)!! Just a thought tho, i saw quite a bit of stutter in the video and when i used to stream mine did as well. Turns out that Google Chrome is a resource BEAST and every extra tab you have open is maxing your processor out. When i closed all unnecessary tabs, smooth as butter. Preciate the awesome reactions fam!!!!!!!!!!
A heart monitor....walk the line...
The different sound was the drummer using drum brushes. Checkout I've Been Everywhere.
Wish i had BJ'S low voice. Bj you sound great!
Thank you!
This is a great song and one of my favorites by him. You should watch Walk the Line movie if haven't.
There a old old movie called I walk the line a long time ago he's in it great movie
I think they made a movie w/ G Peck w/ title... Johnny & June😍
A true American Legend !!
"To prove his love, he climbed the highest mountain. He crossed the widest desert. He swam the deepest sea. She divorced him. He was never home."
Y'all are too funny!!
If you want to hear a country singer with a great deep voice, try Tennessee Ernie Ford. Recommended song, Sixteen Tons.
I have the words I walk the line tattooed on my arm in dedication to my papaw.
I thought BJ sounded good like Johnny Cash when he sang that verse of his song. He is a good Johnny Cash singer.
If you like his baritone voice listen to streets of Laredo, love his versions of it.
He didn't walk the line and he fell into the burning ring of fire. But she was his true love
You guys have to hear A Boy Named Sue!
yeah ver was a vocal line quiet, tink it was john harmonising wit v guitar i tink?, i nvr noticed it b4 n i heard vis song 500 times i reckon.
Love Johnny Cash but it had it's day in the sun....40 years ago.
I grew up on johnny cash love his stuff a true legend of my opinion
If you want another deep voice, try Josh Turner. Pull up the video for "Your Man". You'll get a kick out of it.
If you think that was low, you should hear VoicePlay "Hoist the Colours". It may not be country but ...
Pretty close there BJ. I can't even get down there.
