Fred Lindalen You're missing the point. It's not supposed to be a perfect mimic. The voice is different, but the character of it is spot on. The same kind of rhythm and inflection and general speech pattern, but a different tone because it's a different body.
Bane called Neo "Mr. Anderson" with such similar voice, tone and face expression as Smith and yet Neo still took some time to recognize Bane as Smith. Just like what the oracle said in the first Matrix, "Not too bright, though...".
Ikr. :) Those 3 factors, in addition to that neither Morpheus or his crew have ever used Neo's real name themselfs, should have make him recognize Smith right away. The mystery on how he was able to take over Bane's body, was just a single tiny puzzle that should not ben clouded those more remarkable hints.
Cyber Reshrihm “the real world” is another layer of the matrix. Zion was basically a program like the matrix but instead of the inhabitants concurring with the rules, they were outcasts and separated themselves from the creator. That’s why the Oracle never knew about it’s existence because she was created within the matrix. They were too but they abandoned their programmed ways to live organic. It also explains how neo could stop the sentinels with telekinesis.
The Oracle was spot on when she said that Neo wasn't too bright. If Bane was wearing an "I'm Agent Smith in disguise" badge on his chest he'd still have a hard time working out the clues.
Ben NCM No Einstein......YOU are the one who failed to understand the implications of this scene. Neo cannot see the "obvious" ..... because it is so unbelieveable.
Jesus. What you just suggested is so cheesy, it sounds like garbage. The obvious is just plain obvious and is called as such because it is the first thing that comes to mind. But Neo is not too bright though, as the Oracle confirms.
Ben NCM See, you did not get the movie AT ALL. The disbelief is OBVIOUS on Neo's face, nothing to do with him being dumb. It would be like if you were walking down the street one day, and out of nowhere a 20 foot tall man is casually walking down the street......your brain would not accept the information your eye's were sending it.
This actor who played Bane is REALLY under appreciated. He did a great job if acting out Smith's mannerisms, his quasi emotion, even his speech pattern.
Well what’s funny about Smith’s speech pattern is that Hugo Weaving is a New Zealander attempting to do an American accent in an effort to make Smith to sound neither robotic nor human, so he’s kind of fighting with himself to pronounce things in such a weird inflection. But in the end, it gave Smith an iconic and unique inflection, and this Ian Bliss actor mimicked it perfectly! That’s really some next level acting right there. I read that Ian Bliss was actually handpicked by Hugo Weaving and the Wachowskis themselves because of his slight resemblance to Weaving and his perfect impersonation of Agent Smith. It’s a shame he’s not recognized as a bigger and talented actor, he really did a good job.
It's the source Neo is connected to it because of his programming so his powers don't reside just in the matrix they extend back all the way to where they came from.
Maybe he still feel it as his name, since it was his name throughout his life. And the fact that Smith was able to leave the Matrix is so impossible for him to believe that he reject his suspicion. Of course, he can simply be dumb as well :D
xxlCortez But no one in the real world called Neo this way, and Neo did not know Bane in the Matrix, so how could Bane known this name? And Neo knows Smith can copy minds (he stopped Smith copying Morpheus, remember)? So I think Neo is a dumb.
Lucas Veiga There was never an example that Smith was able to enter in the real world via copying. Neo kept saying that it's impossible even when he realized it's Smith.
all you guys are nuts, it was perfect. he was so blind to what was possible that he couldn't make sense of it. you would think its a joke first, if it weren't so intense.
"The matrix has cost you your strength. Victory has defeated you, Mr. Anderson." "Calm down Mr. Anderson, now's not the time for fear; that comes later."
I've always loved the small detail that Neo and Trinity CANNOT use reality-bending fight moves outside of the Matrix, because this is a fight in the real world - BUT that they still have downloaded, high-level knowledge of various martial arts forms. So we see Neo using complex martial arts moves, but at a NORMAL pace this time, with realistic damage from punches that he can't just shrug off.
Yes and it shows him actually bleeding from the hits he's taking. That's why this is one of my favourite fights. It's intense and brutal and they are both literally trying to kill each other
Bane/Smith: "Look past the flesh, look through the soft gelatin of these dull cow eyes and see your enemy!" Me: "Also, focus on the fact that he's calling you "Mr Anderson".
This is like the only time you remember, learning Kung Fu for the matrix also means you know Kung Fu in real life haha. I mean, they can't pull off all the real cool moves without reality-hacking physics but they can still throw some mean punches and holds.
I don't think it was a requirement in casting. However by all accounts his impersonation of Hugo Weaving got him the part and his slight resemblance to Weaving certainly helped.
I would guess this was choice 2 for Smith and they kept his number on hand. In Hollywood, the adage about interviews/tryouts not just being for that one role is the truest it ever is.
Well, to be fair, It was originally impossible for a program like smith to leave the matrix, and in a human body none the less, so his first thought would be that Bane simply went insane. Neo already knew that Smith can possess redpills, but that doesn't necesarilly mean that they can use the exit once they are possessed. Well, actually we all know it does, but nobody save for the audience knew that.
Arthus850 Yes. Smith basically did the same process the red pill program does... It "shuts you off" from the Matrix, your archives - your blue pilled mind - are replaced with reality. In this case, he just made the same process, but erased Bane conscience and replaces with his "personality".
Yep, there’s a term for that: Dramatic Irony. A literal device where the viewers/audience/readers know something that the character themselves don’t. It’s a usual go-to in building suspense.
Bane, Neo and other Matrix-born humans are of course cyborgs with man-machine interfaces. It's something the Matrix series could have explored further, programs "possessing" real world humans even if only temporarily. But the IP is in bad shape after Resurrections
It's also the only fight in the entire franchise that had shaky cams, flashing lights and lots of cuts; and it still made sense because outside the Matrix neither Anderson and Smith had their powers in the Matrix with them.
It's one thing to portray a character, but a whole other demanding challenge to portray another character just as an actor of Hugo Weavings caliber would. Ian Bliss should of got an Oscar for this, the illusion of him being smith was so deep and delivered so well.
Agreed. It's one of those performances that is so fantastic and to the letter, I don't see someone doing a Hugo Weaving style performance, I see Hugo Weaving/Agent Smith in someone else's body. Fantastic, truly memorable acting.
4:28 I have so much appreciation for how the music stab doesn't appear the second Neo dodges the attack, but rather goes off when Smith realizes he did.
This is basically the moment when people should realize that Jonathan Groff doesn't have as much of range as the casting personnel expected him to have. He's no less of a good actor but this role is not for him.
Agreed. Even the Neo's "boss" character in the first Matrix movie (Mr. Rhineheart as portrayed by David Aston) resembled Smith far far more then Jonathan Groff (I'm not saying the latter is bad actor in general).
To everyone saying you would have realized it was Smith when he called Neo Mr. Anderson you gotta remember something, Cipher was working with Smith and betrayed his fellow rebels without his body being controlled by Smith. That was at least one ability he clearly did not retain, so Smith's code was limited by the fact that he was in a basic human body (which he despises). The software being limited by the hardware so to speak.
Yessss, that’s it Mr Anderson. Look past the flesh. Look through the soft gelatine of these dull cow eyes and *see* your enemy Such a chilling line delivered exquisitely by the actor
I was todays year old when I realized that the guy who played agent Smith didn't actually switch bodies with the bane actor and so that means that the bane actor was actually pretending to be agent Smith. Which he did so well that I literally didn't question it in the slightest and I saw this movie in theaters
My favorite scene in the entire trilogy. When you see Smith on fire like he's ripping through a multi-dimensional universe of Matrix and reality through Neo's sight.. just pure awesomeness.
It makes no sense, there are no superpowers in the real world, thus Neo couldn’t have superpowers here. In the first movie, he survived because he was in the Matrix and he took control of it, including bullets. This reinforces my belief that there shouldn’t have been any further movies after the first one.
"Agent Smith" in the Resurrections comes across like a jealous gay ex boyfriend. "Hey Tom. What's up Tom. Nobody knows Tom like I do" While Flamboyantly prancing around and wearing some silly looking sunglasses. 🤣
Neo has been Thomas Anderson all his life, but even then, the idea of Smith or any other program leaving the matrix was thought to be impossible, so if he had any suspicions, he might have ignored them until it became the undeniable truth.
elcap22 Maybe in the actual Matrix, characters like his boss and maybe even his landlady probably called him by his real name, but I don't think anyone in the real world does. In fact, I seriously doubt any redpills or citizens of Zion refer to their Savior as something as arbitrary as Mr Anderson :/
"Oh yes mr anderson look past the flesh, look past the soft gelatin of these dull cow eyes and see your enemy" *two minutes later shoves electrodes into his eyes and cooks them to the point he can see code in the real world* TALK ABOUT PROPHECY. SMITH IS THE ONE.
The facts that Agent Smith was able to "download" himself onto Bane, that Neo was able to see even after loosing his eyes, and that he was able to stop some machines (in another scene) just by raising his hands are indications that even the real world is not real. It's just another layer of the Matrix. Waiting for part 4 eagerly.
The real world is real. Zion is real. The architect literally lays out the nature of the universe in part 2. Neo is capable of seeing things the way he does and stopping machines because his connection to the matrix is wireless
Eh...The issue is that Bane wasn't even really introduced in the second film, there was the scene where he got copied on to, then the scene where he considered stabbing Neo, then of course the scene at the end. If say for instance, Bane was introduced as a side character in the first film and established a relationship with Neo, then got copied over. THEN I would vouch for a final fight showdown with him.
@@paulgraves1392 I’d agree with that in the context of the movies as they were presented. But as a concept, the final showdown between neo and smith being in the real world, would have made for a superior ending to the trilogy.
I kept thinking about this scene wondering why Groff's Smith doesn't act like THIS... Everyone on set had to know Weaving's Smith had this specific tone and cadence to his dialog. I guess they didn't want him to do it like Weaving because the movies we watched are actually just Tom Anderson's video game telling his story, and the Smith we know never existed. At least that's the copium I need to take to make sense of why, why why....
@Mike John Obviously a Mahmeeeeeee's-basement-Hipster, who knows nothing about the deeper meaning of The Matrix.................consider auto-genocide.
Having another actor do the same character with the same speeach and tonation takes the character to a whole other level always loved this. They also both say to him "we both know appearances can be deceiving".
A bunch of people who had the benefit of watching Bane get assimilated by Smith, judging Neo for not realising a human being he's not that familiar with who still looks like that human being literally had their brain fucking altered by a computer program after 3 seconds of contact. Yeah, sure, you all would have known straight away.
Maybe some people would've known. There is some tell tale signs and maybe that's of a hint for some. Others might take longer like Neo did. I think it depends on how a person thinks really. To me the big thing is, it's a movie and it worked out better for dramatics if Neo didn't know right away who it was
I never thought about motion capture for that before. I just remember getting chills with how spot on Ian was at capturing Hugo's essence during this scene
@@Golmerian27 Exactly. The only reason i thought it was mocap in the first place was because of how much of it has been used throughout the trilogy in a way that was considered to be groundbreaking back then. So i was quite suprised when i found out that Ian's portrayal was all him, especially because of how convincing it was
He kinda knew but he was unable to believe it (and I mean way before he said "I don't believe it"). And I don't blame him. Even plotwise it doesn't make sense.
+RC Slyman Bane's actor apparently intensely studied Hugo Weaving's tone and body language from the first movie to get the character down pat for Reloaded/Revolutions.
RC Slyman a movie cannot be terrible, that is impossible, therefore it is impossible for this movie or any movie for that matter to be terrible. All movies are good in at least one person's eye. It's all a matter of perception....Mr Anderson.
"Look beyond this dull cow eyes and see your enemy" Neo: "It's impossible" Smith "No, not impossible, inevitable". This scene and the scene with Neo and the Oracle is why I love the Matrix Revolutions more than the other movies, this movie was deep, the others looked like they were too concerned with flashy moves and that's cool, loved the fighting but love the dialogue even more
It had to happen he was destined to lose his eyesight in the real world so that he could embrace a new power notice how had a hard time recognizing smith from the beginning but soon as he lost his vision he immediately saw smith & not the guy he disguised himself to be in the real world.
The actor playing Bane is awesome. You can almost see the Hugo Weaving creeping under his skin, and during the strobelight flashes, he looks like Hugo Weaving's clone.
Ninja Buddha It just needed more resolution than what we actually got. For instance, it would have been fascinating to see the real world begin its reconstruction after the war, know if Neo will really be seen again or not, and if the others who are still in the Matrix want out. They don't answer any of that, which are the main reasons the movie became a huge disappointment. I still like it though.
Neo: [to Trinity] you've just made a serious mistake. Bane: Not as serious. I fear. Neo: [to Bane] Bane... Bane: [to Neo] let's not stand on ceremony here, Mr. Anderson.
I'm sorry but Neo is slow as hell to not realize Smith was possessing Bane. He's basically spelling it out to the man that he's Agent Smith! I mean seriously, who else that he knows that calls him Mr.Anderson? The voice and mannerisms are a dead giveaway
Man the contrast between this fight and those in the Matrix is unreal. It’s brutal, messy, bloody. They are no acrobatics, no cool moves, just punches and makeshift weapons, and they get hurt pretty bad. Fitting with the fact they’re in the real world.
Damn, the actor who plays Bane NAILED Hugo Weaving's voice. Absolutely perfect.
No.... Hugo Weaving has a darker and more Clear, voice.
Bane sounded like a 25 years old compared in voice.

Such a chilling line delivered exquisitely by the actor
Neo opens hatch, "Trinity!"
Hahahaha
@@Golmerian27 what😄😀
I was todays year old when I realized that the guy who played agent Smith didn't actually switch bodies with the bane actor and so that means that the bane actor was actually pretending to be agent Smith. Which he did so well that I literally didn't question it in the slightest and I saw this movie in theaters
2:31
Most epic line you ever get from your enemy.
Pretty much
He can see him because it’s code, they are still inside another layer of the matrix.
My favorite scene in the entire trilogy. When you see Smith on fire like he's ripping through a multi-dimensional universe of Matrix and reality through Neo's sight.. just pure awesomeness.
*TRUE SIGHT/GOD VISION*
It makes no sense, there are no superpowers in the real world, thus Neo couldn’t have superpowers here.
In the first movie, he survived because he was in the Matrix and he took control of it, including bullets.
This reinforces my belief that there shouldn’t have been any further movies after the first one.
"Agent Smith" in the Resurrections comes across like a jealous gay ex boyfriend. "Hey Tom. What's up Tom. Nobody knows Tom like I do" While Flamboyantly prancing around and wearing some silly looking sunglasses. 🤣
Long bad guy monologue works against him everytime.
Hahahaha!!!!!
"I can see you."
boiiiiiiiiii the goosebumps
Neo loses his sight, he develops extrasensorial perception
Reminds me of another character lol

If I was Neo, I would have clocked it was Smith as soon as he said "Mister Anderson..." . Surely?
Neo has been Thomas Anderson all his life, but even then, the idea of Smith or any other program leaving the matrix was thought to be impossible, so if he had any suspicions, he might have ignored them until it became the undeniable truth.
I guess so. Even so, I wouldn't have guessed any freed minds or people from Zion would have called him by that name.
yeah, because Smith is the only person who calls Neo "Mr. Anderson."
To quote the Oracle "not too bright."
elcap22 Maybe in the actual Matrix, characters like his boss and maybe even his landlady probably called him by his real name, but I don't think anyone in the real world does. In fact, I seriously doubt any redpills or citizens of Zion refer to their Savior as something as arbitrary as Mr Anderson :/
Also that Weaving/Smith Impression was freacking amazing!!! he din´t even need to call him Mr Anderson!
Agent Smith is still Neo's Area Manager.
"When Zion is in... ashes, then you'll have my permission to die".
I was so upset about him blinding Neo... and the overall ending with Neo.
People who think the new guy played Smith well should rewatch this clip.
Yeah he definitely had Smith’s mannerisms down way better
Damn smith brings his glasses everywhere...
😂😂 that's what I thought too
4:29 that moment when script writers decided to return to first movie's style.
I was so glad that the machines were at least kind enough to fix Neo's eyes when they brought him back to life in 'Resurrections'. 😊
3:32, R.I.P Neo's Eyes
itss aod thing hes theon and hass that extra site
yep
In the memory of, Jesus Eyes.
More like RIP OUT Neo's Eyes..
having no eyes suits him
"Oh yes mr anderson look past the flesh, look past the soft gelatin of these dull cow eyes and see your enemy"
*two minutes later shoves electrodes into his eyes and cooks them to the point he can see code in the real world*
TALK ABOUT PROPHECY. SMITH IS THE ONE.
He's not.
2 minute foreshadowing lol
The facts that Agent Smith was able to "download" himself onto Bane, that Neo was able to see even after loosing his eyes, and that he was able to stop some machines (in another scene) just by raising his hands are indications that even the real world is not real. It's just another layer of the Matrix. Waiting for part 4 eagerly.
The 4th movie doesn't address the layers at all, unfortunately. Very disappointing 4th entry
I’ve seen it yesterday, totally recommend seeing it.
@King Dingeling I keep thinking that everyone in these comments that says it's good work for warner bros, lolol
The real world is real. Zion is real. The architect literally lays out the nature of the universe in part 2. Neo is capable of seeing things the way he does and stopping machines because his connection to the matrix is wireless
You waited for nothing...
Bane does a good Hugo Weaving impression.
This should have been the final fight of the entire film. It was the one with the most suspense and the one that made the most sense
Red Flag True.
@@paulgraves1392 good thinking
@@paulgraves1392 I’d agree with that in the context of the movies as they were presented. But as a concept, the final showdown between neo and smith being in the real world, would have made for a superior ending to the trilogy.
2:25 that's when Neo realized that Bane is Smith
His Hugo Weaving impression is spot on, not gonna lie
It was incredible! I'm curious how long he prepared for that role
It's truly remarkable how the actor that plays Bane manages to capture the exact voice like Hugo Weaving's. 😮
That's a sign of a good actor to me
Still a lot better then Jonathan Groff in Resurrections...
0:33 yeesss.. Shoot - fry us -
*BURN US ALIVE !!*
he speaking yet you can practically hear smith when he speeks.
so neat
my favorite scenes in movies is when the hero has been crippled or injured in some way, it just makes them even greater when they strive to win
"I can see you."
Now if Neo was fighting John Cena...
0:06 As soon as he said Mr. Anderson I would have INSTANTLY knew I was talking to Agent Smith
4:34 since he's able to see like that, look at bane, it shows the image of smith now.

To me the big thing is, it's a movie and it worked out better for dramatics if Neo didn't know right away who it was
The part where Bane says “inevitable” is the icing on the cake. Neo’s like: “Ah crap it is this fool!”😂
Ian Bliss did such a good job recreating Smith's mannerisms that for years i thought it was a motion captured Hugo Weaving.

Neo is not sure if it's Smith
He kinda knew but he was unable to believe it (and I mean way before he said "I don't believe it"). And I don't blame him. Even plotwise it doesn't make sense.
"Not too bright though."
it's one of the greatest and smart scenes in movies history
As terrible and contrived as the two sequels were, perfect casting is perfect. This guy nailed the Hugo Weaving impression.
+RC Slyman
Bane's actor apparently intensely studied Hugo Weaving's tone and body language from the first movie to get the character down pat for Reloaded/Revolutions.
RC Slyman a movie cannot be terrible, that is impossible, therefore it is impossible for this movie or any movie for that matter to be terrible. All movies are good in at least one person's eye. It's all a matter of perception....Mr Anderson.
This is arguably the best scene in this movie
*i think of NOTHING else*
He’s so chilling I love it
There's so much conviction in his words that it makes it seem as though Bane has been Smith the whole time
a lot of you are sad at how the end of this fight went
but this was the final step to make new truly see around him
I don't know why so many people hate it either, it felt like an incredible finale to the series.
I though when I first saw the movie that it was the same actor that played the agent but with some make up, damn great performance
That would've been really interesting to see
awesome scene, that idea of neo able to see him, and also how they depicted smith like he was the devil
Thank you my DVD skipped this part and went right to where he had no eyes this explains so much, back to the movie!
"Look beyond this dull cow eyes and see your enemy" Neo: "It's impossible" Smith "No, not impossible, inevitable". This scene and the scene with Neo and the Oracle is why I love the Matrix Revolutions more than the other movies, this movie was deep, the others looked like they were too concerned with flashy moves and that's cool, loved the fighting but love the dialogue even more
caw* hes not got bovine eyes lmao moo
Neo’s first fight in the real world gets his eyes completely fried. That sucks. I always felt bad for Neo in this scene.
It had to happen he was destined to lose his eyesight in the real world so that he could embrace a new power notice how had a hard time recognizing smith from the beginning but soon as he lost his vision he immediately saw smith & not the guy he disguised himself to be in the real world.
Dude does a pretty good Mr. Smith impersonation
The tone in the way the actor speaks is amazing
"Not impossible... _inevitable_ "
OK Thanos.
Neo went straight for the head though.
The actor playing Bane is awesome. You can almost see the Hugo Weaving creeping under his skin, and during the strobelight flashes, he looks like Hugo Weaving's clone.
Wish this movie had a better ending. It was going great until after this epic scene...
what didn't you like about the ending?
Reloaded and Revolutions are pretty fine if you cut some of the fat.
@@fjoelprice Really? I kind of liked the open-ended finish to it. Left things to the imagination in my opinion.
@@fjoelprice man that's just asking for too much

he should of realized the moment he was called mr. Anderson
Remember, when Neo met the Oracle she did say he wasn’t too bright.
Amazing imitation of Hugo Weaving by Ian Bliss! Good job, sir!
Can't believe it's been 10 years.
This movie had some weird dialogue but wow this scene was incredible between Neo and Smith.
That was probably the best dialog in the whole movie
3:32 He had the prettiest eyes ever. :(
Don’t get me wrong these movies are fantastic, but I think they were made to give you a seizure
Hahaha for sure there are some scenes that make you wonder
I'm sorry but Neo is slow as hell to not realize Smith was possessing Bane. He's basically spelling it out to the man that he's Agent Smith! I mean seriously, who else that he knows that calls him Mr.Anderson? The voice and mannerisms are a dead giveaway
4:38 He went from imitating Agent Smith to imitating a crying woman! 😂
Man the contrast between this fight and those in the Matrix is unreal. It’s brutal, messy, bloody. They are no acrobatics, no cool moves, just punches and makeshift weapons, and they get hurt pretty bad. Fitting with the fact they’re in the real world.
