    Speaking of old stuff my grandfather used to buy out entire libraries when the close down. I never really got to know him that well cuz he had Alzheimers and died just a couple of years ago. But my family tells many stories about him, a tale tells of a great library he once had. Although, I think it was just a house with bookshelves lining all the walls. They said everywhere there where just books all over. Bookshelves lined every wall in the house. Countless collections, some of the books where almost a century old turning to dust. And all of that, for some reason in his will he left it for me, but in the end there was a fire and most of his grand collection was lost. But I still hold countless treasures of books entire worlds all held within the ever so thin pages bound so loosely together. So much of that destroyed, lost, but I have some of his oldest collections. He had a copy of every single Shakespeare writing, book on cooking from France the original over a hundred years old. Famous poetry, all of edgar Allen poe's stories and poems. The grim tales. Mythology. Religion. Cultures, history and so much more. I'll never know why he chose me trusted me with his collection, but I feel as if I some how got to know him through his past. The music records he kept, books he liked, drawings, diagrams and designs, his writings, movies, and the stories I hear of him from my grandmother. I even more so want to learn about him because of how everyone that knew us both day that we are so much alike. So yeah, I got a butt load of very very old books from my grandfather before he died. Ever since I've been adding on to his collection my collection our collection no our connection to eachother separated by time. Sorry this was a bit long, though that maybe someone would find it interesting

    If there's one thing that's important for a beginner violinist it is to learn where to play the notes and how to read sheet music for the instrument. I taught myself the violin too and after I spent the first few weeks becoming comfortable with where the notes are located it was so so much easier to get better fast.

    I play the viola and the violin, and here are some tips: 1. If you want to take care of that old violin, please don't turn that case around like you did in the beginning of the video. That case isn't very good to protect you violin so yeh. 2. If you want to let it sound good, it would be good to search a teacher or like some one of you school who can learn you how you need to play the violin. 3. One of the most important things is that "stuff" you showed (I also don't know how it is called in english bc I'm from Belgium) that helps you to get a good sound.
    I hope that these tips helped a bit, if you have any other questions, you can always ask them!

    • @heikebekaert2193
      @heikebekaert2193 6 років тому +1

      Also a good tips is to put like little tape on the places where you need to place you fingers, maybe you can ask a person on you school who plays the violin or viola to place the tape on the right spots.

    violin tips: put stickers on the board under the strings where you need to put your fingers for corrext tuning, try to use lots of the bow and try to bow straight, dont bow too close to the bride or the finger board, put enough rosin on your bow, don’t try anything fancy like vibrato or spiccato or whatever

    That's a really nice violin I love the carving. Also I play the violin and one of the first songs I learnt was silent night (when I was seven) and it wasn't hard at all. As long as you properly rosin the bow, and don't press too hard it shouldn't be screechy. You are very musical and talented so I'm sure you'll manage to learnt it by Christmas! :)

    tip from a violinist - get a lesson or two from a teacher just to get you going , they’ll help you set it up , tune it etc . i’ve taught myself multiple instruments but violin is one that i don’t think i could’ve done by myself (at least not without breaking it lol). idk about where you live but teachers where i am often do free first lessons so you could do one of those if money is an issue ... good luck tho!! you’ve got this :)

    That’s so cool!! I’ve played cello for quite a few years so it’s not really the same thing but definitely make sure to keep your bowing hand loose while playing with the bow! It helps a lot and I bet there’s a ton of videos on how to do that. And maybe start with plucking first? Idk bowing is really fun but plucking can help when you’re first starting to learn techniques and notes and stuff but definitely keep updating on your progress!!!! The violin is so cool!!!!! :)

    Play viola, it’s great and beautiful and people always need more of us lol
    Also, that’s the coolest scroll I’ve ever seen.
    Edit: you can take it to any shop and have them replace the bridge; that happens with them a lot. Also, when they replace the bridge, they’ll replace the strings.

    Violin terminology
    Thing you put your chin on: chin rest
    Thing in the middle of violin: is a bridge
    Under the bridge or in the instrument is the sound post without that there would me no noise.... it's not the best to play the violin without its bridge the sound post can fall and it's a pain to put back
    Tune pegs at the top: tuning pegs
    Also viola is pronounced with a e at the I so it's more like veola

  • @tacosmexicanstyle7846
    @tacosmexicanstyle7846 6 років тому

    Good that you've started practicing holding the bow! It's not very natural is it... I'd also recommend practicing controlling the movement of the bow across the strings to keep it straight (the bow tends to angle up towards the fingerboard the further you draw the bow down and makes this horrible scratchy noise)
    Also, there's a lot of musical notation that's specific to bowed string instruments! You can familiarise yourself with the symbols for up-bow, down-bow etc while you wait for the bridge to arrive (and maybe read a bit about bowing technique as well). Don't worry so much about getting the notes right and your fingers in the right place, you can probably work it out by ear if you tune strings well anyway (half of the challenge with violin is that depending on the day, your fingers will be in slightly different places to get the same pitch anyway)
    :)

    I play the cello I have been for around 3 years, (6th to 8th) and it's so cool that you take an interest in the instrument, I haven't really met many people who take an interest in the cello. Also, with a new bow, you're going to need to rosin, the thing you were putting on the bow hairs, it for a long while.

    Honestly I think you should try to play whitout the tape on the finger board because they usually just distract and aren’t really helpful at all. Also I think you should start whit playing scales (scales are also a good warmup)

    the resin (that wax stuff you rubbed on the bow) you scratch it with the end of the bow that you tighten it with and then rub it on the bow. also it's called a chin rest in english. i don't play violin but i played it for a year and played cello for a year. also i commented it on another comment but don't touch the horse hairs on the bow!

    A tip for when you get a new bow is to always loosen the hair after playing and to try not to touch the hair with your hands. Over time the hair will get dirty and will sound horrible when you play. Also you should get a cleaning cloth for the violin to clean the strings after playing

  • @absmithstar
    @absmithstar 5 років тому

    I play the cello and the violin and I gotta say, the cello is way cooler. But the violin isn't that bad. Some tips would be not to touch the bow hair and try to play on the e, or highest string, as little as possible. It can be very obnoxious but in some cases, it is needed. Your bow hold looks pretty good, but make sure to look up the correct posture and stuff, it's pretty darn important. Good luck, and have a nice day

    This is my favorite video! Your Grandpa and my husband would spend hours and hours talking about music and, if he could get your Grandpa to play, they would have a session! :) A session is when ppl get together and play for themselves, not for money.
    That carving is gorgeous! I hope you find out the story behind it. btw: A person who works on/builds stringed instruments is called a "luthier".
    I just want to grab my husband and kids and hop on a plane and go see you now! :)
    Oh, yeah, it sucks playing stringed instruments without frets. My husband plays the banjo and he has a fretless banjo. eek!
    Your teachers will go insane for this!!!!!!
    I hope that you use it as a fiddle instead of a violin. Fiddles rock! there is a great song called "Rosin the Bow".
    Was the accordion a button accordion? Czechs are big into accordions, but we play the massive accordions.
    Much love!!!!!!

I'm trying to teach myself too and I think it's going well. I found out that you should loosen your bow when putting it away. Also the English word for that old thing that you rub the bow on is called rosin and the Wawa instrument is called an accordion 😁

I have played the violin since I was 7 (6 years) and I bet if you got the violin fixed you could play Silent Night by Christmas :) You shouldn't touch the hair on the bow and should buy more rosen :) Reading music is hard but you will get it soon. I learned it using a mnemonic and then forgot the mnemonic and just memorized the notes. You should definitely put tape on your violin to tell you where to put your fingers, I still have mine. Don't be discouraged if you look up videos of people playing and it looks super easy and then you play and it's not. I'm so excited for you to play, please show us progress videos! :)
