Long, Long, Long- The Beatles (Guitar Cover)

- Long, Long, Long was written and sung by George Harrison. It was recorded on October 7th 1968 for the White Album. The Beatles recorded overdubs the next day on October 8th
John Lennon did not perform on the song. The backing track consisted of George on his Gibson J-200 Acoustic Guitar, Ringo on Drums, and Paul on Hammond Organ. At the end of the song, Paul's organ started making a rattling sound. It had a bottle of Blue Nun wine on top of the Leslie speaker that made the cabinet buzz
The overdubs consisted of Paul on Jazz Bass, their producer Chris Thomas on Piano, and George overdubbed a second Gibson J-200 part
The song is in the key of F major. George put a capo on the 3rd fret of his guitar. At the end of the song, when Paul's organ was rattling, George scraped the low strings of his guitar fast (in time with Ringo's snare drum fills). The last chord he plays is 000000, all the strings played open, also known as an Em11 (Gm11 with the capo on 3rd)
I'm using my 1970's Ibanez Jamboree, which is a Japanese copy of a Gibson J-200. I positioned the capo on the 3rd fret in such a way that it produced the buzzy string sound of George's track. I did this by placing it closer to the 2nd fret, so it sustained less and buzzed on the lower strings
When my video splits to two screens, you are seeing the main guitar track on the BOTTOM and the overdubbed guitar on TOP. The overdubbed guitar mostly consisted of the low pentatonic hammer-ons played during the intro and verses

For all the gems in the White Album, this is (by far) the most precious of them all. Lennon and McCartney (and George Martin) were really blind (and deaf) to George’s increased prowess as a songwriter.
Great job in here, Sam!
an underrated jem and I never knew that 2:43 was in there with all the other noise
great cover!
Sounds great Sam! I’d love to see you cover Not Guilty, it’s one of my favourite George songs from the white album era.
I 2nd this! One of my favorite tones and solos of his.
Fun fact: According to Mal Evans, Not Guilty was the first song where George used his 1957 Gibson Les Paul "Lucy".
Me too, I don't know exactly why but this song always touched me, it's amazing ❤
Great idea! Its a very good song
One of the most underrated tunes from The White Album…and you nail it once again! I tried to do a version of it, but something sounded off. Your video is a big help in me seeing what I was doing wrong.
Something about this song gives me this feeling that I can’t describe, I love it
Awesome cover! It's definitely a rather overlooked George song, in my opinion. Also, rather convenient that such a peaceful song follows Helter Skelter, huh?
One of the forgotten gems of the White Album. Great cover too! I'm always surprised by George's weird rhythm pattern on this song, it feels really strange to play
Absolutely love this song and the sound of that guitar
God, what an amazing cover. Really shows how great George was with his progressions
Great cover, Sam. That opening riff is so haunting. One of George's best 'underrated' songs. Very deep too 🙏🕉️
Best song on side 3 of the White Album, IMO. I never get tired of hearing the beautiful, ethereal guitar/organ intro. Noteworthy drumming by Ringo, as well.
Nice cover as always my friend 👏👏👏
This one is my favourite GH song on the White Album, it's calming but there is also something a bit haunting about it, such an underrated song.
The wailing at the end of the song, it's like a soul that is lost. I know I have said this about some songs, but this song will always be my favourite. George's capabilities as a songwriter was on another level compared to John and Paul. I always loved this song, because of the mood of it. It doesn't have a specific emotion, but it felt very ethereal and almost divine (especially with that guitar intro).
Nice!
This was one of the first songs I started loving to learn how to play.
It was easy enough for me, and sounds beautiful.
Great job recreating 👏
Amazing 🤩 you are a top scholar of The Beatles 👌🏻 Great channel
Nice job, Sam ~~ Thanks for posting !!
so glad you did this one. a truly underrated gem. wonderful as always.
So simple and so beautiful! Love George so much. Great choice to cover!
Probably my favourite George song very underrated
Fantastique job!!!!I love this song so so much.
❤❤❤
I was waiting for the very final chord... Well done👏👏👏👍 Excellent version 👍
Thanks Sam for another great cover.
Love this one !
You nailed, way to go!
One of my favourite George songs.
Sounds great Sam
Great job as always, this is among my favorite George Harrison's songs , form White album that it's my favorite Beatles album, I hope that you'll cover more songs from White album.
Very great Sam , I love this Song , George was a great Songwriter. We all missed him 😢
Sounds terrific...!
Well done, great skills 👍
¡Grande Harrison!
Gran compositor....y con contenido en sus letras.
EXCELENTE FINAL 👌 ME RNCANTO EL EFECTO QUE HICISTE ! GRANDIOSO❤
This is a Beatles song I really like but DO NOT listen to enough! Thanks for giving me more appreciation for it with the isolated guitar part. Beautiful!!!
Awesome, as always. Love this song immensely. You really got down all the nuances just right. Splendid!
Now I'll patiently await Revolution 1 cover.))) Has many cool lead lines.
Very beautiful guitar you got there! Great cover too, as always
Awesome cover again. I also liked that screeching part at the end :)
waited a long, long, long time for Sam to cover this . Good Stuff man!
Love that tune, and really love how it follows the loudest song on the While Album, Helter Skelter.
Very, Very Nice !.. 😊👍👍👍
Awesome Sam, I love your channel, each and every video ❤
Class
Good job!!🎸🎸🎸
That Ibanez sounds BEAUTIFUL!!!
Great cover as always, Sam
Amazing job as always!
Thanks Jess!
❤
i was struck by the group of cyberbullies today and this is exactly what i needed, great job sam
Ignore the trolls! You’re better than them
@@sampopkin thanks sam, there is no way they think beatles and guitar stuff are gay and i'm not gonna let that slide me !!!
If someone called me gay I’d take it as a compliment. People are idiots and homophobes
@@sampopkin I‘m really glad you’re so good with my best friend.🥵🥺
@@sampopkin oh lol ur funny sam sorry for not responding a month ago
Here comes the moon!
Great work as always Sam!
Thank you! Cheers!
it sounds to me that the song was played with more dynamics originally... more differences between the soft and hard parts .. maybe i'm wrong and it was just done in the mix
You’re probably right
Sounds amazing Sam! I’ve seen it in other comments, but I would also like to see George’s Not Guilty. Keep up the amazing work dude!
Will definitely do that one! Thanks
Thanks Sam; awesome song. I wouldn't have known it was Capo 3rd without your video !
This may be a dumb question but As a non-guitarist how does one know when a song has a capo especially if not done live or written about by the song author
@@davidzenner7040it’s a great question. The common open chord shapes on a guitar have specific intervals/the order of notes. For example a D chord starts with the root note, then 5th, then root again, then 3rd
Without a capo, going up the neck you have to play different shapes to play the same chord up higher. So regular guitarists can hear a D chord shape being played with a capo up higher because the intervals remain the same. I hope this isn’t confusing haha
¡Great hard work excellent bro!, now "Junk" (Esher Demo) please... :)
Hey Sam! thanks for the music! It would be wonderful to see you play Dear Prudence.
Hi Sam, I loved "long long long" a recommendation "Free as a brid"😃☝👌

Another poorly rated masterpiece, but a very favorite of mine. Thank you so damn much.
I always wondered about the scratchy part at the end. Now that I see how it's being done, it seems so obvious😂!
It was done by a wine bottle rattling on top of an amp I believe
@lancep4164 Only partially true, but it's not the entire part I'm alluding to.
@@lancep4164 And the wine was Blue Nun. All hardcore Beatles fans know this.
@@BeatlesCentricUniverse Sorry. I didn’t realize you were being sarcasttic
Amazing video Sam, I think I learn songs with you than with tutorials jajajaja
Beavo.
You deserve a real Gibson J200
Very cool cover. Kind of a shame your J-200 copy didn't have a tune-a-matic bridge. That way you get that shimmering attack.
I've been making myself learn this song using barre chords instead of using a kapo. I've been playing guitar for about a year and could use as much barre chord practice as possible, lol. But looks so much more manageable with the kapo.
Props for learning it without! But George definitely used one, as seen in session photos from that day
Sam, this is amazing. Well done! May I know what brand of strings are you using here?
Thanks! Martin Monel Retro 12’s
Not that this proves anything but Ably house talked about this on their Patreon.
They suspect that George used his truss rod to cause the ringing and buzzing. They claimed to see a picture from the white album sessions where George had his truss rod cover open with a Allen wrench hanging out of it. I’ve never seen the photo but I doubt they lied!
Great job, I was not expecting to see this, especially the ending!
That’s interesting! I don’t think would have produced that buzzing sound, more likely it was just George adjusting the truss rod to get better intonation
Also, another interesting fact was that the buzzing/rattling chaotic ending wasn’t planned. It started after about take 50 or so when Paul’s wine bottle made the organ cabinet rattle. The rest of the takes they recorded afterwards were intentional in this way. But the pictures of George with truss rod you mentioned were from before they started take 1
@@sampopkin While intonation is definitely a possibility, John and George’s sometimes played with their guitars set up like that. When they used the 160Es, they tended to have that buzz and ring even all the way up to Let it Be with George’s J-200. It’s possible they just liked that sound, I kind of do too!
I like it don’t see many covers of this one, are you still intending to continue the medley?
At some point, but pausing for now. I don’t own a jazz bass that was used on Golden Slumbers
@@sampopkin I am always impressed with how much thought you put in to using the right gear for all of these covers (even down to the outfits!)
Great cover! For Waves Reverb, do you recommend getting the entire Abbey Road plugin bundle, or just getting individual ones? I've never used the software before but everyone highly recommends it, but if I can avoid paying the full price for the bundle I will try 😂
I didn’t buy the bundle, I got good deals on the J37 tape plug-in, TG12345, Abbey Road Plates/Chambers and REDD desk plug-ins. They’re all great. Just depends what you already have or need
@@sampopkin fyi, UAD plugins fairly recently went native (as in many of their plugins work now on either mac or pc without requiring any of their hardware) and they have a Fairchild compressor. Might be worth looking into around Black Friday season.))
outstanding video! never knew George was contributing on his acoustic to the loud outro.
is it know specifically when george got this guitar?
Not sure but it shows up during White Album sessions. Probably summer of 68
I’ve heard he gave it to Bob Dylan, but I do wonder what actually ended up happening to it. Given that he wrote and recorded a lot of his later-era Beatles songs on it, I’m sure it’d be a very valuable guitar.
(Anyone who has a Gibson J200 certainly isn’t hurting for cash!)
嫌いな曲だったが、こんなにいい曲だったんだ。
Just need to revisit the 6th to 7ths that are dotted about the song, but good effort.
What brand of guitar is that Sam. It looks like a Gibson
J 200, but the headstock doesn’t. 🤔
A 1970’s Ibanez Jamboree. A lawsuit era japanese copy of a J-200. Very good quality
Is it fair to say George loved using capos? 😅
Yes! Haha
You just needed the bottle of wine on the speaker that vibrates near the end.
Where did you get the Ibanez?
Reverb
@@sampopkin Those ain’t cheap 😳
Was $500 ish. Not bad for a vintage!
@@sampopkin I saw it for $1,500ish!
@@A_BeatleLad they can go for $1200+ but sometimes (like mine) are very affordable. One of the best acoustics!
Can you please do Dear Prudence… by The Beatles…😊
He doesn’t have a J-160e
I’m still deciding if it was Casino or J160e
@@sampopkin i think it was J-160e, making that the last time John used his J-160e plugged in
Dropped D. Basically he got through D, C, G mostly but uses movable chords down the neck with Travis picking.
I think it's a Casino!
Subsequently, Pink Floyd will grow out of this.😁
George achieved that scratching sound at the end by actually using one of the AKG D19c microphones against the strings, of all things.
Wouldn’t that be hard to make it sound that fast? It sounds like pick scraping to me 🤷
@@sampopkin That's straight from Ken Scott himself, who was there engineering the session. I'm inclined to believe it.
Mother Nature's Son, Please.
ight now its time for some oldies 😅
