  • On 26 September 1978, ITN's Carol Barnes reported from London as the UK capital rehearsed its flood drills. Utilising the wartime technology of air raid sirens and loud speakers, the Greater London Council (GLC) sought to protect the city's residents from the potentially catastrophic effects of a flood. The system largely consisted of giving the population advanced warning of the approaching tide, evacuating public areas, and urging people to shelter at home (preferably upstairs). A full six years before construction of the Thames Barrier would be completed, such drills were critical to mitigating the risk of flood in London, which was sinking even quicker than the national rate of 30 inches a century.
