In this video series, Chuck Dorsett makes a leather knife sheath from start to finish. In the first video, we will be making and marking the pattern for the sheath.
Later on, we will be covering cutting, sewing, and assembling.

Beautiful work, really easy to follow and expertly done. Just what I wanted, cheers.
I do blacksmithing and this will definitely come in handy
Awesome man, this is a great vid, made it real easy for a beginner like me!
Glad to hear it, thank you!
Iv made around 16 knives all different kinds the only issues I have rn is the sheeth and Iv only been making knives for about a year all self taught but iv sold a few now for a pretty penny just like to learn more
I trust this guy
you're the best Chuck, got me into leatherworking and I've spent a couple thousand with Weaver over the past 4 of 5 years, you deserve a raise
This guy is awesome haha
Chuck, I know that patten is all holes but shouldn't we do some pattern maintenance for consistency? Circle the holes to be punched with a black Sharpie?
Absolutely! Thanks for pointing that out.
What ounce leather do you recommend for a knife sheath? Thanks
Hi Mike,
We would recommend somewhere in the 8/9 oz. area.
@@WeaverLeatherSupply Thank you! I ended up watching all of your videos and also visited your website. I will make an order very soon. Thank you for your video series.
Another great video. However, chuck you make me nervous with that open blade utility knife 😬 while you move your hands around. Close that blade. I can’t concentrate.
You’re a little too fast for me
I watch tutorials in 0.5 times speed sometimes
Perfect timing. I was asked by my dad to make a sheath for a custom knife he was given. It'll be my first one, and this video series will help tremendously. I love all of the Weaver Leathercraft videos. Keep up the great work Chuck! You always inspire confidence and positive learning!
Thank you so much, we're glad you're finding the videos helpful! Have fun making the knife sheath
I watched this series and made a sheath for my homemade knife that night. It turned out amazing! Thank you so much!
As a knifemaker I had to learn leather sheath making. It really upped my game.
@WeaverLeatherSupply, I really like this series, and I’m going to use it for my G.C. Company stag handle bowie knife. The only thing is that I would very much like to have fringe along the blade side. Would you just add that in so you have 4 layers on that side (the lace being a thinner layer)? Or, would you skife that side of the back layer to help reduce thickness? Or is there another way? Thanks!
..just think of how, we poor lefties, are grateful to you...
Your videos are awesome. And it’s because of you I buy from Weaver. Quesion: on the handle not too sure what lentght to make. I believe you said to the top of knife handle? How far down should end of handle go to attach to body?
I really do enjoy this format, breaking a big project up into several elemental videos.
Thank you, Charles. We kept going back and forth as to what the best way would be, glad you like them broken up!
First, this series convinced me I can make a decent sheath, so thank you for that. Trying to buy them was ridiculous. Quick question on the patter making: if you are making it on paper and the corners are hard to cut with a box knife, aren’t scissors an easier choice?
Hi Mark,
Yes, you can absolutely use scissors for both the paper and the leather!
I've seen people glue hard plastic or wood inserts to the inside of the sheath so the blade doesn't cut it. Is there any worry about cutting the stitching when drawing the blade out over time on one like this?
Hi there,
The leather welt that was added in the video will keep the blade from cutting through the stitching. Hope that helps!
Hello, Chuck, from Far-Far-Away! COuld you please show us next the PROPER way to make a nice leather-discs handle? Thanks for your work!
Hi Alexandru,
Thanks for the comment!
Are you referring to a stacked leather handle for a tool, similar to the handle on this maul? www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/65-2500-24/barry-king-maul-24-oz-/pr_8613/cp_/shop-now/hand-tools/mauls-mallets-hammers
Hay I finally found a welt, =////=====> 11:26Thank's again.
Noice
I wish I could make this comment have a snap sound affect
So many different knife form-factors, its incredibly frustrating as a beginner to find aids to customizing a sheath. I would have liked this to have been a slower speed for focus on the customization pieces, inconvenient to have to start and stop to try to comprehend key info. Also including relevance to a couple other basic designs (taco, fold over etc.) would have been right what the Dr. ordered. Literally the only video I've seen just focused on the sheath customization part so thank you.
this is the best 'hot to make a pattern' I have seen in two years. Thank you
ditto.
Had to, mute olé Chuck. But watched the whole video, and going to build a couple of the S.A.P. sheets.
Jesus loves you.
Have you noticed any rust issues with storing blades long term in leather sheaths? Thanks
Thanks!
This 6 part series is a great tutorial in how to make a sheath. I’ll be giving it a try for my forged knife as soon as the leather arrives. Thanks Chuck for the easy to follow instructions
Can I ask what oz leather you are planning to use? I looked at the link for the “complete list of used materials” to find out but the website is down. Idk if he mentions it in the videos or not but I haven’t watched them all yet either.
Thanks again for sharing your skills and taking the time to teach us some new things. I love the steady conversation and speaking skills you got. THX again.
I really like the way you explained it I'm really thankful for your video thank you
Great instructions thanks a lot. Best wishes to you.
i have sword 1' 9" 3/4 that i am making a leather sheath, what zo leather should i use?
Hei Chuck, fantastic work. I followed your series of 6 videos and made my first sheath. It's a pity that I can't post it. My very humble opinion, it came out gorgeous. Congrats for your work. It is straightforward. Anyone can do it. Just follow your steps. Easy. 👏👏👏
Great to hear - so glad it turned out good for you!
Thanks great series, I have several knives that need leather.
awesome
What if the blade is wider at the tip than at the hilt?
What size is the paper you are using?
Hi Jeremy,
This was 11" x 17" but you could also tape together two standard 8.5" x 11" pieces. hope that helps!
I want what this guy drinks in the morning!
Excellent explanation. Thanks.
You are so welcome!
Chuck is the Bob Ross of leather.
Handsome leather sheath for a handsome leather handled knife.
Is that a Randall knife?
Nice Randel pattern
Cool
thanks!!!
What if I want to make shafts for left hand person.
Hi Christopher,
You would just need to flip the knife to face the opposite way when you go to make your pattern.
brilliant
Best instructions I could find. Thanks, thinking about getting into some sheath making. Well done, thanks for posting.
Thank you, Len!
Thanks for video.
Thanks for watching!
enjoy your videos what make utility knife do you use
It's just a Stanley, not sure on the exact name but it's a retractable blade with the hole at the end to tie a string to it.
@@WeaverLeatherSupply thanks for the info really like the videos
i just want to know what knife hes making it for and where to get one
@Danny Moore yes i heard that part. i was kind of hoping his buddy had a sight where i could buy one.
It's a randall model 1
I see right handed knife and gun but I’m left handed so both left handed right?
I'm not sure if I'm reading the question right but the knife sheath and holster videos are both right handed so for left-handed you can just reverse the way I made the pattern. So for the knife, you can flip the blade the opposite way and for the holster, you can add the tooling on the opposite side of the leather from what I did. Let me know if that didn't answer your question!
Weaver Leathercraft thanks I was wondering so I meant that I’m left handed so should I flip the side for the leather
@@Texo_McKevo That's correct!
Great video! I am planning on making a sheath for my Japanse Nakiro kitchen knife, but it has no tang. How would you make the strap to hold it in place?
instagram.com/p/BqdRGkGnXw6/
Like that. Go from back to front with the retaining strap stopping the blade from slipping out. And you mean it has no guard, not tang.
@@bajanpiper thank you so much! Sorry for the late response. But doesn't the rivit scratch on the blade of the knife?
Holy caffeine dude!!! Slow down, brah! This obviously ain't your first knife sheath. I respect your art/craft and you clearly make awesome products, but HOLY SCHIDT!
This dude has no chill
IMO, you would be well advised to SLOW DOWN, SPEAK PLAINLY and give PEOPLE A CHANCE OF FOLLOWING what you are RANTING about...! Jeez...do you ever BREATHE?????????
You can adjust the video playback speed
