      @@TheObsidean Me too. My first concert was Nana Mouskouri as a 10 year old. Front row centre. I was mesmerized. I also happened to look like a mini version of her coincidentally. Dark long hair parted in the middle with dark glasses. I remember learning to stand to give a standing ovation, my dad shouting Bravo, the crowd not wanting to sit. Some man running up the centre aisle and handing her the loveliest, biggest bouquet of roses. But most of all I remember she paused and deliberately came to the edge of the stage and just took some time to look down and smile at me. People started to look at who she was paying attention to, including my dad. I could tell she was genuinely pleased to have a child in the audience. My father was thrilled. And it was just kind of amazing for a little girl off a farm to come to the city and see such talent and beauty. It opened up the world to me. I loved the Greek songs. And her band was *incredible*! I was dazzled. Yes she was just as good as her studio recordings! My mother told me the next day that Nana had children my age at home while she was on tour. She thought Nana likely missed them and connected to me because of that. She did give me the biggest, widest smile. Thank you Nana. A class act with such a sweet temperament.
      This was in Canada 1981. Centre In the Square. Kitchener-Waterloo.
      Her music takes me back to life that is just memories now. Her music will always connect me to my father. He just loved her. And so do I.

    That lady rocks! It's not only her undoubted vocal charisma, mostly it's her performing, her interpretation of every song that gives the impression she means & understands every single word or punctuation - and she does- !
    Last time I watched her live was on the last day of her farewell tour. One could guess the effect age (74 at the time) & a 4year world tour had on her voice, but on the other hand her technique was impeccable, her breaths were amazing and she could mask any vocal issues easily. Believing this was her last day on stage and without cameras that always make her feel uneasy she gave 200% of her capabilities. More than two hours of pure artistry and class!

    I actually met her during the 2004 Athens Olympics when she came to talk to The Olympic Youth Camp, to young athletes and us volunteers, I believeon behalf of UNICEF. Very sweet lady. A music legeng. Maybe unknown to many nowadays but she has recorder "over 200 albums in at least twelve languages. She has sold in excess of 350 million albums worldwide, and globally speaking, she is the biggest-selling female artist of all time". I am not sure if that still applies but for sure she is among the bigest selling artists out there and she did it before the Social media era. Can't wait for this analysis. Considered by many critics as Europe’s answer to Barbra Streisand, Mouskouri’s was truly something amazing and totally different from the big voices coming from America. From the 60’s, 70’s, and most of the 80’s, the voice was dulcet, creamy, and clean as flowing water. She could color even the softest phrases as if it were the easy thing in world; a brilliant voice to say the least.

    Fantastic reaction Jess! ❤️ Took me right back to my childhood, running into my grandmothers home, the smell of fresh baking and her belting out vocals to Nana M, Vera Lynn, Julie Andrews or some musical album that was on the record player, a truly emotional journey for me, God bless her, the wisest woman I ever knew & I was honoured to call her 'grandma' (She was one of those grandmas who was grandma to all children if you know the type, she was truly loved by all in the village a true force of energy & good in the community, also thought to be a bit potty as she would sing down the high street as she'd go shopping.) | Much Love, Peace & Respect | Stay Safe Ya'll

I loved her voice and I thought she was beautiful. I think I still like girls/women with glasses because of her. She is a politician now, I think, and from what I've seen (not much admittedly) she hasn't aged much at all (but I still might have a bit of a crush, so I could be biased).

      In Fairy Voice Mother's breakdown of Wicked Game by Diana Ardukhinova, she notes that despite all the vocal skills on display (which FVM can list anatomically on first hear!), it's still all within an octave and a half. So range is also not necessary for great singers. Think Tony Bennett or any of the 80s emo singers, esp on songs like "All of my Heart" or "Enjoy the Silence".
      One thing that now drives me nuts in vocal reactions is tapping keyboards to check high notes, or in the video itself, silly cheering for high notes like it's athletics. In the immortal words of David Letterman: "This is NOT a competition. So please, NO WAGERING."
      If we discouraged people for lacking a distinct trick or a given range, we would never get self trained wonders like Sharon den Adel or Angela Gossow...

    Nana Mouskouri is some kind of musical chameleon. She adopted very well for the countries (markets) she used to sing for. As examples, it was very much chanson like in France and more the "Schlager" type in Germany and probably more traditional in Greece.
    But what's really outstanding is her Jazz recording "The girl from Greece sings" from 1962, produced by Quincy Jones. Maybe you find the time to react to one of these songs. My recommendation would be "No moon at all" - ua-cam.com/video/ayzzWQSj-eE/v-deo.html

    You should react to Ofra Haza - The Whole Soul. Please, please do. She was the biggest Israeli vocalist of all the time who also got very popular in the 80s and 90s internationally, often called as the Madonna of the Middle East, or the Barbra Streisand of Israel. She was the iconic voice behind the iconic 'Deliver Us' from the Prince of Egypt. Please check this out!

      That's a great question. As a French person, I always assumed that she was Greek AND French, as her prononciation sounds flawless. However, she isn't, and it looks like in fact she didn't even grow up in France! I'm genuinely impressed and would love to hear about her French background story if anyone over here has a clue?

    Erm I'm just wondering if you've had any requests to Austin Browns solo project of "Ain't No Sunshine" which in itself is amazing but more especially to what he says afterwards. Been hunting your videos comments sections for anyone else telling you about this and couldn't find anyone. Apologies if you've been inundated elsewhere, which I have to think is likely as I can't imagine you wouldn't have been, but because I couldn't see anything really felt you should have someone tell you. Just felt it was really something that was important and good for you to see.

      After having a look at you channel I can see you don't often react to the same person more than once which it totally cool, that's actually why I thought it worth telling you. I thought even if you didn't react to it on camera it would be good for you to just watch for yourself. 😊

    Please please react to Home Free's cover of 'Mayday' by CAM soon. I think you are familiar enough with Home Free that you'll get the surprise they spring on ya in the video. Just remember those crazy low notes you heard from Tim Faust as you watch. I know you'll love it. Aside from the surprise its just a great song. It was the second song Adam Chance did with the group after he replaced Chris Rupp. Speaking of, Chris Rupp, after leaving to pursue a solo career, worked with a Russian American youtuber to make 'Wayfaring Stranger - Epic Version' by Simon Khorolskiy feat. Chris Rupp. The title _does not lie,_ it is quite epic and I think you would love it. Simon also does an AMAZING version of a song called 'Wonder as I Wander - Epic Version' again, the title does not lie.

    Just a little correcting: unlike Italian, in French words that have an "à" with the accent as in "delà", the accent is purely graphical, i.e. it doesn't affect the "a" sound in any way (at least in standard French, which certainly is Nana Mouskouri's French). I think that here she pronounces the a kind of open rather because "au-delà" means "above", so there is a (very nice) progression to a "lifted" sound. Sorry, that was the French teacher nerd coming out of me lol But ofc great video as always!

    • @jessicasopranonotes
      @jessicasopranonotes  3 роки тому

      Thank you Jasmine!! Looking back, I instinctively knew that the sound of the 'a' vowel isn't changed, but musically it sounded like she gave it a certain type of energy not on the note before. Do you know why the language uses the accent if it doesn't alter the sound at all? Why not do without? Would love to know! ☺️

    • @jasminebouguerouche6384
      @jasminebouguerouche6384 3 роки тому

      @@jessicasopranonotes You're very welcome :) My students ask this all the time haha
      For the "à" it mostly is because of homophones: in the written form of the language, we find it useful to differentiate words that are pronounced the same way but have different meanings. For example: à (preposition "to") is written with the accent to differentiate it from the verb "to have" (avoir) in the 3rd person singular, which is conjugated (il/elle/on) "a"

    • @jasminebouguerouche6384
      @jasminebouguerouche6384 3 роки тому

      It's the same logic for "delà" because it is composed of de+là. We write the "là" (meaning "here") with the accent here so as to differentiate it from the determinate article "la" (feminine "the" in French)

    • @jasminebouguerouche6384
      @jasminebouguerouche6384 3 роки тому

      There are other graphical accents in French that follow the same logic, for example "ou" (or) VS "où" (where), "sur" (sure, certain) VS "sûr" (preposition on), "mur" (wall) VS "mûre" (blackberry), etc. However, some other accents are effectively used for a true change in the vowel sound (mostly é/è/ê/ô in standard French).
      Finally, some just don't make a difference nowadays, but used to be pronounced differently in an older layer of the language and we kept them (mostly â, for example in "château", castle, the â is pronounced just like a regular a in modern standard French, so there is no effective use of the accent anymore, however we still keep it).
      This goes for standard French though, some francophones would make a difference between "a" and "â" in speech (mostly in Quebec accent -in France this isn't widely used at all as it is considered somewhat "arrogant" and non-standard)
