I was a radio officer in the Australian merchant navy from 1967-1992. The morse sent in this tape is from a hand driven straight key, it is not perfect timing but it is easy to understand with a touch of panic in it. OM during my time at sea was an expression meaning 'old man' which was commonly used for the name of another radio officer. For example - .... .- -. -.- ... --- -- (thanks om). It sounds genuine to me. RIP Titanic.
True or not you did a great job of taking us back in history! I am retired as a Commercial Radio Operator and worked HF Morse Code for 2 years straight in 1962 and 64. We worked through all kinds of radio conditions, near blackouts, static crashes, fade outs, etc. You did a great job on this story-Thank you👍👍
A great presentation I read many years ago a operator in England heard the messages from the Titanic no one believed him at the time. The recorder at the time may be a wire recorder they were present at the time. CW will be back even God use it to communicate with people it happened me one night. The message was : In God we trust: I was a Leading Telegraphist in the Irish Navy 1975 to 1979. It was C.W. most of the time. Morse code never left anyone down. EI3EA
@@willstadnyk7209 I just reposted this video, it's Jack W5FG's narration, not me, it's a recording he found, I didn't find it, I didn't say "Port Race, New Jersey", Jack did. I just thought the recording was interesting!
ITS A CQD OM DE MGY POSITION 41/46N 40/14W SINKING CANNOT HEAR FOR NOISE OF STEAM DE MGY CQD SOS = You're exactly correct; a great comment! See www.novascotia.ca/titanic/wireless-transcript.asp for a log of reception in nearby Nova Scotia.
Glass arm does not mean bad sending but a painful stiff arm resulting from bad position.

"it's a CQD Old Man".
Even in the 1990s we were still calling each other OM on 500kHz.

That’s not “port race, NJ” it’s “Cape Race Newfoundland”
Isn't Cape Race in Newfoundland??
Cape Race is on Avalon Peninsula, southeast Newfoundland.

@@djringjr You say "Port Race New Jersey", that's what has KW8G and myself confused! Can you explain that. Excellent story by the way.

100% a straight key IMO. Vry gud sending in a panic. You can tell it’s second nature to this officer.

The coordinates transmitted were 41/46N 50/14w, (not 40/14w). At least, that's what i heard I believe.

Lots of speculations and non solid arguments.
