Jack Najork XE1/W5FG sent in this recording of Titanic, some very experienced high speed (over 25 WPM straight key operators) say that this is surely a top notch radiotelegrapher using a straight key, others have their doubts of that, and that Cape Race/

A look back at a vital profession. Radio operators all over the world maintained communication between land and ship using shore and ship radio installations and provided emergency, search and rescue communications. Today, this type of communication is primarily used by radio amateurs. Thanks to Radio Officer, Rolf Marschner, DL9CM for the copy of these fine videos about DAN Norddeich Radio.
Short Video N1EA with Begali Russian Bug with Two Levers

Short Video N1EA with Begali Russian Bug with Two Levers similar to those used by UA3AO and UA3AMY originally used by the elite radiotelegraphers in WWII (The Great Patriotic War - as they called in in USSR against NAZI Germany, and Fascist Italy, and Imperial Japan. These keys can really send beautiful numbers because the repeated dashes are very well formed.

memories of 15 years a Sea - fantastic
Wirklich tolle Zeitkapsel! Helden!
Vielen Dank an alle Seenotretter für euren Einsatz! Tolles Zeitdokument.
What a gem! Thank you for sharing so much! + de DL7HH . .
Hello, George Manning was my grandfather, he died when I was pretty little so it was nice to be able to see video of him. I was wondering if you have anymore footage of him? If you do and you'd like any proof that I am who I say I am I can provide his call sign.
George's call sign is already mentioned. K1CG. I have no more videos of him, only memories of him.
@@djringjr ah thank you, my dad said I should mention it if needed. Thank you for responding though, from what I remember of him he was an amazing grandfather and my dad always talks fondly of him
I remember well the day it all ended and later with GMDSS which was the death nail in the coffin for RO,s
Sad time but worse was to come. RO's and now extinct. Still pounding my brass pump here. Vive Le CW
My Dad was on the H.D. Thoreau. THOREAU got caught in a North Atlantic storm, bombs broke loose in the hold and were rolling around! Sent a distress. The "solution?" All ships ordered to MOVE FORTY MILES AWAY from THOREAU! 🤣 After they got through that, they were diverted to Savannah to unload. I know he went to Murmansk, and somewhere else he went they took horses(!) and had a Veterinarian with them. 73 DE W8LV BILL
People have forgot the Power of Radio and shortwave and morse code to get information through. I been a ham since very young and now 44 years of radio hobby fixing and operation when i can - video makes me proud that i know morse code very well. Big thank you to all the radio operators ship, land and ham radio . Thank for the video posting. Anthony ve4akf.
I wish I had a German Olympia all capitals SM4 portable typewriter (MILL) with a USA QWERTY layout like the one that appears at the beginning of the video at 0:21. 73 de N1EA
"it's a CQD Old Man". Even in the 1990s we were still calling each other OM on 500kHz.
Jede Sekunde Spannung. Ein Zeitdokument von bleibenden Werten
I was a Radioman in severals ships in Chilean Navy operating CW mode...it was a beautiful time and experience...best regard to all radio operators from those years...
I was in the Irish Navy it was c.w. also for messages. true it was a great time in communications I served from 1975 to 1979.

To me, almost certainly it was sent with a straight key. I use both straight keys and a Vibroplex; the length of the dits in the transmission has variation that you don't have with a Vibroplex bug (its dits are very consistent) but is common with a straight key. And at that speed, sending good 3:1 dah-to-dit ratio code on a Vibroplex is very, very challenging; typically the dahs are much elongated, giving the familiar "swing" characteristic of most Vibroplex operators. Also, a Vibroplex could easily be disabled on a swaying/lurching/etc. table, whereas a hand key can be easily operated in unusual attitudes (even held in one hand and keyed with the other). So generating code that good on a Vibroplex on a sinking ship, is highly doubtful in my view. Amazing recording,. That was some amazing sending..... 73, AI5QA
Great response! I agree, a very talented straight key sender like we often found from the UK and German professionals.
ITS A CQD OM is "It's a CQD OM" - "OM" is a common telegrapher's abbreviation for the brotherly affectionate remark "Old Man".
Just watched the news broadcast out of New York. The ships musician and his wife lost everything on the ship AND came home to a house that had been burgled.
Nice
I can only hope to be half as good. 73 WP4TGK

Triste ricordo 😩
I loved the KDM sideswiper. Came across it on the russian-built ships in the 70s. Made sending OBS messages a lot less tedious. I liberated one and have it now in a transport museum.
Been using a ST key for 69 years. Thanks for the video. fm Pete, WA2JMG

Nice speed 26 WPM… like the agc action as well… sounds great.
No mention of Portishead Radio (GLK/GLA) a famous British HF maritime station, maybe they didn't work on 500KHz? Great video just the same, long live the A1A emission...
Portishead/GKA was HF only, no 500 kHz and was on the air after the 500 kHz shut down.
@@djringjr Thank you for that.
