- I'll teach you how to paint your sculpture in just 3 steps! Using only acrylic paint and a couple of brushes.
These painting techniques can be applied to pretty much any organic paint job.
STEP 1
Block out your sculpture with a base colour
STEP 2
Add highlight with the dry brushing technique
STEP 3
Low lights. Creating contrast and depth with colour washes.
MATERIALS USED:
Pebeo Studio Acrylic Colors
A variety of art brushes - nothing fancy
water
This clay sculpture was modeled in FIMO air natural, over an aluminium and tinfoil armature.

My biggest take-away was the whole dang video. I was struggling with painting clay but you actually showed the techniques so well that I feel a little more confident with using your techniques in my next painting session. Thank yooooooou!
I've never before seen the wash applied _after_ drybrushing. The usual process is a middling dark base coat, a darker wash, and the lighter drybrush.
I love the flicking technique. I'm definitely going to have to try that.
Normally I use air dry clay but because of your videos I feel like trying the polymer. I just love watching your videos!
You make it look so easy!
yessss this is exactly what i needed. ive been putting off painting a sculpture because i didnt know where to start but this video gave me the perfect push start. thanks!!!!!!!!
That's great to hear :) Hope the paintjob turned out well.
I've done drybrushing and washing before, but it's been awhile and I have a new project I want to use it with. Thank you for the quick and straightforward memory refresher (and the one or two details that were new to me)!
Hi Robert :) Glad you found it useful as a little refresher! Such simple technics, but makes such a big difference in tying it all together and making it more realistic.
Ok…I have watched a multitude videos on polymer clay and the painting of them…your’s by far are the best! Thank you.

This was the exact type of video I was looking for...so helpful & awesome work! Thank You :)
Hello I am new to your channel. But I absolutely love you nature creatures. The bonsai creature and the mushroom creatures. Love them. I am hoping you can do more of this style. I thank you in advance. And appreciate you and your work.
I'm just getting into clay sculpting and I've found your videos to be very helpful. Thank you.
My five-year-old Isla and I love watching your videos together. She says she would like you to sculpt a girl whale with blue fins.

Thank you soooo much 🙏
Hi pretty new to painting and sculpting very good video. How do you determine where the highlights are on the sculpture since it can be facing light from multiple directions depending on its placement do you just choose the high points as higher elevation or the part that are mostly extruded out of the sculpture?
Oooo
Hi do you need to varnish your sculpture after painting it or can I leave it thanks?
Do you have any tipps on how to make the paint more opaque?🙋♀️
I need 6-8 layers just for the base coat to be covering and I've tried like 3 diff. paint brands🙈
Your work is gorgeous! 🥰
Have you tried a primer that fits your base coat? Colors like yellow seem to stick better with a white primer, for example.
@@scheve1994 Thank you for the tip! I got one from my local craft store, but it didn't change anything. Maybe I used it wrong bc it got kinda crumbly as well. I'll give it another shot ^^
Not related, but what breed is your dog. They look super cute and a lot like my dog
What about back nail varnish on the eyes to bring some life to this masterpiece ?
Yes that would have been a nice touch! A gloss varnish is great for eyes our to make other parts of a sculpture look wet. Nail polish is fine for air dry clay, but with polymer clay it can react badly as stay sticky.
Can you please make a hognose snake?
You don’t need to prime first?
What about how to prevent the clay from cracking if I want it dry before I paint it?
good brands of air dry clay shouldn't crack. small cracks can be fixed by adding a bit of fresh clay and then letting it dry again.
I want to learn on how to make a human head. .i get interested of making sculpture made of clay but i need to learn more of it. .how about human head . .
Thank you for the suggestion :) hereby added to my list.
y not do lowlights before highlights?
What kind of paint is it
This was done with PEBEO Studio Acrylic paint. However, my new favorites GOLDEN Heavy Body Acrylics as they have great pigment and coverage (eg: amzn.to/3APhGoZ)
