And there are places like Ikea that, even with shipping, you can get a decent mattress with a good warranty at a reasonable price.

Yes mattresses and cloth furniture like couches and comfy chairs are always purchased new around here. However when I ran across a doctors family that was selling their $13k Pennsylvania House king-size bedroom set with 2 dressers for 3500 I said sold. At habitat for humanity I purchased a solid mahogany credenza and executive desk for 300 bucks. It had belonged to a lawyer. They just do not build furniture like it anymore. Zero plywood. One thing I would like to get rid of is the formal dining room and all the chiba and crystal my mom assured me I would need. We have only used it a couple of times and only because I made a point too.

But how often do you buy new mattresses? When you get married you buy one and the last till you die right. Lol No actually me and my husband did go out and buy a new mattress and we had to make sure it was something extremely comfortable for him because he had back problems. It was so expensive I was nauseous thinking about spending that much money. We were only married a few more years so him and his new wife got to enjoy it I guess. I agree with always buy new mattresses.

Yes!! I finally bought a relatively inexpensive mattress for the first time after 20 years of marriage. I have pain/health problems, and this new mattress was causing me a lot of increased pain, but I didn’t want to return it, or pay more for another, etc. My hubby, who works in health care, told me that some long term care centres are using sheepskin wool blanket pads under the sheets for comfort and to reduce bed sores. I found a huge sale of sheepskin rugs at Costco a while later, and my bed is now the most comfortable bed on earth! It feels luxurious, and my pain is much lower! I wanted to share this with you all. :)
But please do buy new mattresses for health, or at least know their history. Then put a sheepskin rug or two on top!!

Best furniture deal is to act like great grandma. Accept good stuff handed down from family and expect it to last a lifetime. Clean it, care for it and expect the kids to respect it! My fav. comment from 5 years old grandson, " Grandma, when your dead, can I have this chair? I'll need it for my grown up house!" 😄😆

The thrift stores have gotten way expensive in our area.
Goodwill and Salvation Army are the very most expensive here, and they get everything donated.
I would rather shop at Salvation Armt, though, because they are always there when disasters happen.

I was in a Salvation Army shop, a group of senior staff members came in and I heard the one woman in the group say "increase the price of everything, people are buying our goods and selling them on ebay" Buying a teddy with its ears missing or little kids underwear, bigger sellers on ebay. Yes the prices in these shops has gone up.

There is also a really wonderful Catholic organization called St. Vincent DePaul that has thrift stores that are truly low, low prices as it is considered a mission and not for profit. When my friend was in dire need, they even gave her free furnishings, dinnerware/cookware, and a toaster oven to cook in. You don’t have to be Catholic, they help everyone. They’re always getting great things from estates left to them to help those in need. I shop there because it gives free stuff to people who lost everything.

Wow, I do most of these things. Just not the haircuts. Our lady charges $5 for each of our boys and my husband. About once a year my daughter and I get ours trimmed and she doesn't even charge us. Afterwards we go out and get the dollar menu. So, for us it is a once a month treat. You always share such great ideas, thanks!

You are so right that these things add up! My friend cuts hair in her garage, and cuts mine about 4 times a year for $12. Who cares about manicures when you play in the garden? For clothing, I sew and shop for fabric at the local swap meet where on Wednesdays the leftovers from the LA garment district is sold for $1/yard. I'm currently sewing corduroy pants (fabric $1, zipper 25 cents) that will fit me perfectly though I'm toying with the idea of lining them with flannel for the winter. I sew sweater sets for less than a dollar a piece. Never had cable, and am losing tolerance for the free antenna shows. Here in southern California, we've had years of drought so a dead lawn is acceptable - no mowing necessary. What we do pay is high taxes.

100% agree across the board. This is why, even though we are retired, we can afford to do pretty much anything we want without having to worry about having the money. We've taken two trips to Alaska and didn't have to pay a dime for plane tickets because we use our miles card for purchases and then pay it off every month.

I get my lawn mowed every other week for $30 a month in California. When the weeds in the back get high in the Spring it's another $30. That's it! We've been in a drought and we don't water much, so it doesn't grow excessively.

This depends on your state of health. My husband is 79 and I'm 67. We run a 6 acre homestead, grow our vegetables and much of our fruit, keep poultry for eggs and care for my mother who is almost 100. We now our lawns and my husband mows hay. We take the view that lack of exercise and suddenly doing something strenuous is dangerous but just keeping working hard continuously extends your ability to be active and healthy.

Y'all are spot on. We live by these rules all the time. My hubby always calls dibs on the doggy bags for his lunch the next day. We have had such wonderful luck with our used cars. Our last new car just turned 22 years old and we sold it bc we did not need it and it was costing us insurance taxes and registration not to mention driveway space. We are trying to figure out how to lessen our bills in our high rent area (the 1%ers are just across the street). We bought a small house that was a foreclosure in a top neighborhood. And though it is not paid off we have a lot of equity that should pay for our retirement property in full. We have zero credit debt and our boat and camper are paid for. We have been unlucky with our 401ks as they have been wiped out twice. 911 and the great recession. I wish we would have paid down on the house instead.

I agree on buying used cars always did and will do so in the future but the one exception is I once had a job where I drove 52 miles every day through the snow belt. I bought a brand new 2008 Honda CRV at end of the year sale, took out a 6 yr loan and paid it off in 3 years. Ten years later still have the old girl (but gave up the job) Except for regular normal maintenance you do on any car, I've only had the air conditioner repaired and that is it. I will keep this gem as long as it holds out. I cut cable 7 years ago. People ask us all the time what do we do in the evening. We talk, cook, go outside and garden in summer, have a glass of wine and solve the world's problems, play board games or read. We do sometimes watch Amazon Prime but I agree with you on Netflix.
I also didn't like who they have recently hired for the board. Will only get worse.

Five years ago I bought a 2012 Altama. It was a year old. I had saved my money and paid 1/2 down. I borrowed the rest on a 5 year loan. I paid it off in 2 1/2 years. After I paid it off I saved what I made at my job and only lived on my SS and worked a year and half and retired last year. By buying one that was a year old I saved $9000 off of the new price. I am still driving this car and only have put 18,000 extra miles on it. I don't go a much since I retired so m car should should last the rest of my life. I worked till I was 76 years old.

I bought a 10 year old car from an older woman who bought the car new and only drive it once a week to church. It had never been driven on a dirt road or driven in the rain. It still had plastic on the floor. And only had 5000 miles on it. It now has 90k miles on it and I’m not ready to get rid of it yet. It’s in like new condition and I love it. I have only had to replace the battery once. And no car repairs yet. I keep the oil changed and us synthetic oil. Oops I forgot I have had to replace the thermostat twice because it got stuck. Best Buy I ever made.

My daughter just wore a $3 Goodwill fancy dress to our local Daddy Daughter dance. It was very fancy, kind of a mini 'prom' type dress and I dare not guess what it retailed for new, but a LOT more than $3, no doubt. That price was just right for me, for something she'd only wear a few hours!

It only has 90,000 miles on it so I'm planning on having it another 10-15 years. I think I'll get my money's worth. You can do that with a Subaru. Yet, as I drove it over the property line of the dealership when I first bought it, I "heard" the clink of massive depreciation!.

I wish I could give a million thumbs up to the new car topic. I know someone who made that mistake and had to have a family member help bail them out. They have told me that they probably would never have been out of debt if they hadn’t been able to get someone that could help them. Since most people don’t have a wealthy parent or family member their back pocket most people would have been stuck with it. And then on top of that the family member who bought it from them (in cash) discovered it was a lemon even though it was brand new. We also don’t do car payments. I could not agree with you more on that topic!

Buying a new car advice is so true! A new car loses so much value the minute it leaves the lot and continues to lose a ton in its first 4 years. No need to throw all that money away. Just do your research and get what’s right for your lifestyle and features you feel are best for you. They have so many great points in this video. It is much harder with a girl when it comes to the clothes and hair stuff though as our society is much more critical when it comes to us females. Stinks but true. However, there are some tips and tricks to help your girls. Several gas stations that have a car wash will often give a free car wash for 10+ gallons of gas. If you’re filling up anyway, why not get the free wash too? We as a society have become so lackadaisical when it comes to physical work. We pay needless money for things we can do ourselves. I find it ridiculous but I was also raised on a farm and taught to work from sunup to sundown. Best thing for our family is living as minimal as possible and selling things once we are done with them to buy anything we need later. We mostly do garage sale, estate sale, thrift store or used clothing lot shopping from EBay or straight up after season clearance sales. I have bought things for as low as 50 cents at department stores off of end of season clearance. (Only way we do brand new clothing) Driving to your college areas at the end of the semesters are a great source for household things such as dishes, furniture, and decor for free. A large majority of college students just toss these things out when they go home for the holidays and summer. You can often also find expensive, food quality clothing too. Sad to say, but many parents just buy them new every year so you can benefit from this if you stay on top of the college schedule for the last few weeks of the semester. Overall, this is Fabulous advice! Thanks guys 🙃😀

In my area the used stuff is more used and not a lot of the high quality stuff. I spend a lot of time searching but it works out in the end. We don't find those 2 and 3 dollar sales on the sale clothes unless it is junk. We do a things the way you do them. I love how blunt you are. Keep 'em comin'.

Used upholstered furniture is not something I would want and always buy new mattresses and pillows---bed bugs would be the reason. Salvation Army and Goodwill here in Washington, DC will not take these items due to possible infestations. So be careful. I got professional scissors and have been cutting my own hair for some time. My hair is in a pixie now--which was professionally done the first time--then I learned by watching You Tube how to cut hair. I get asked a lot-- for recommendations as to who cuts my hair. Short hair for ladies is fun and a time saver BUT expensive. My hair grows too fast to pay to have it cut every four weeks to maintain a certain style. It was cheaper when I had it shoulder length, but took a lot of time to style. Now I can grow it out again and maintain it myself. (LOL! I should have been a hair stylist instead of a nurse.)

A number of years ago we bought a brand new Kia van. It broke down constantly. We live in Texas and made a trip to California to visit my sister. We broke down three times on the way out there. We finally got to my sisters and she showed us where the nearest Kia shop was and it was in the shop the entire time we were there. 2 weeks! and it broke down once on the way home. We gave it back to them and refused to pay anything more on it. We informed them what happened and they said they would fix it and we told them it was in a KIA shop for 2 weeks and it still broke down on the way home. I told them they needed to paint it lemon yellow.

I live in the suburbs of Charleston SC and it's amazing what people throw out! My dining room bar is a garbage find😁. Someone tried to paint it, must have not liked it, and threw it away. Score for me! I looked it up and it's a $600 piece of furniture if bought new. One day I found a huge all wooden 9 drawer dresser and brought it home LOL I didn't even need to paint it! It was already pink for my daughter's room 😁

I'm frugal but no way I'd buy used mattresses, upholstered furniture or clothing. I won't attempt to cut my own hair.
I purchased my home and cars cash. Make sure you know tax rates in the communities you're house hunting in. I review my insurance policies yearly. I wouldn't have cable except my spouse insists. I cook from scratch, cook almost daily and make enough to pack lunches with. We don't eat out, we occasionally cook indulgent meals at home ($10 salmon meal at home -$60 meal in a restaurant). I rarely use a credit card and never carry a balance. I don't buy on credit, if you do, add up all the finance charges and consider that the purchase price.
All that said I have pets. Never, ever get a pet if you can't part with money. I'm frugal not cheap.

Right now our habitat store is getting rid of old inventory which means there clothing is 25 cents per piece. I don't have a TB (25 years). There are plenty of things to do. TV is programming and propaganda. As a gift I had my feet manicured and hated it. Furniture I find free or super cheap. I have an upholstery cleaner and I am good at refurbishing furniture. I love cooking at home natural organic veggies. I rarely go out because of food allergies, GMO, processed nutrient devoid foods.

I am a grandmother and now I give my grandchildren 25 dollar gift cards to their favorite restaurants. From the time they were six, yes six, the majority of them ate adult meals with no leftovers... They are required to take me with them for their birthday meal. I thought this would make them more conservative with their spending, but also not the case. They also have to pay the tip :) ... We go after church on these excursions. Most go to their favorite Mexican restaurant, but one of them Steak and Shake, so she can go more often. She is seven and on Sunday's, she gets her meal for free LOL... I am raising up Frugal grandchildren!

In my town, there's a car wash you can spend $20 month for a membership and you have unlimited car washes & vacuums. I don't buy it, but a lady that attends the senior center lives on a gravel road so she uses it every day.
I have internet and not cable.
I've never bought a new car or furniture.
I make $16,200 yr and I'm raising my grandson (he's a HS senior). When you make that little a year you think about every dime before you spend. I shop at thrift stores and garage sales. I go to the food pantry and we have a free food distribution in my town twice a month. So, I get free food 3 times a month. (some of it I can't use so I share it with other people). My food stamps are being cut by 60% starting this month and that's going to hurt. It's hard enough to feed an 18 yo male (you know how they eat) without losing 60% of my food budget.
Also, check with your insurance agent. He/she might have some new insurance plans that can save money. I was astounded that my agent found a Medicare Advantage plan for me that had a zero monthly premium, zero co-pay at the primary doctor, and only a $3500 out of pocket maximum. The plan I'm on is going up to $24/mo in 2019 and co-pays were going up too. I also found a good deal on car insurance even with a male teenaged driver.
If you're a senior citizen, check with the senior center in your area. The one in my town provides free tax preparation, free rides to the doctor's office, and has a bus service for almost nothing for other necessary trips such as Walmart or grocery store. The bus comes right to your front door so you don't have to walk to a bus stop. They also provide home-delivered meals, in-house dining for a nominal cost, and free exercise classes, social clubs, and wellness checks.

$22,000/ year with 4 mouths to feed. Thank goodness my house and car are paid for and local taxes here in Virginia are less than $60/month. Also this year we had Medicaid expansion so now no insurance costs, just a few medical costs that aren't covered.

Touching on the cable...I cut my cable 4 years ago. I DO NOT MISS IT!
If you have WIFI, Buy a RUKU stick that can be purchased online or at a local store like target or Walmart for $50. I stream FREE channels all the time. I have Netflix too, but that’s all I pay for. Everything else is free. I also bought a digital antenna that picks up local broadcasting (I pick up close to 20 local channels). Before, I paid over $100 per month for just cable, then I dropped my cable package to basic at $20 when things got tight...now after research, I ONLY pay for Netflix at $9.84 per month. I do pay for WiFi (which I have bundled with my cell phone), and that was reduced to $40 per month. Basically I went from $100 per month for TV/Movies (not including WiFi), to $49.84 (including WiFi).

We did buy me a brand new car. Toyota Corolla with a very good trade in and 0 interest. The car was $20,000 and is paid off now with only 20,000 miles on it :) ( I bought a used Toyota truck that I never should have. Long story) I love thrift stores! I buy clothes, books, housewares and yes, even gifts at a thrift store. WAIT!! We are the lawn care people! My husband raised a son on the side job of mowing yards. I love those people ;) My husband bought an ice cream for a friend's daughter. After a few bits, she whispered to me, "I can't eat all this." I told her it was ok. We can put it in the freezer for later or take home. Stop feeding your children so much! The waste of food in America is crazy! Working in a day care, I see so much waste! Great video, Tawra and Mike! I have learned so much from you guys!

I don't purposely go out unless it's a church or family event,I can't afford it,plus I cook a certain way that's helpful for my medical issues. So that means I'm treated to dinner out or eating out in a social setting about once per year average. In 3 years, maybe twice. We are always shocked to see people(mostly families),look like they got the food, touch it and leave. They leave the tables filled with food and drinks.
I love the talk about the haircut and buying of new clothes.
I tend to only buy 2 dresses on clearance per year for church conventions or special church events out of town or country. Otherwise,I purchase discount fabric and sew something to my fit,or get handed down from friends or now my grown daughters. When my children(twin girls) were small,I shopped the salvation army for quality rough wear clothing, then donate them to family members as they grew or back to salvation army. I would purchase some new church clothes on clearance or sew them. When my son came along,I worked 2 jobs and was in collage. I shopped the clearance from my store, plus my discount after they were brought back and marked down to the lowest, only because I couldn't get to the thrift stores and such between these jobs and school, but I still saved tons. I cut my son's hair until his working sisters decided to take him to a barber a few times,or a guy from church volunteered to give him an excellent line-up and cut for free. As he got older and I bought him a new kit,I was his supervisor as he did it himself. As a working adult,he stopped paying after 3 times having to fix something, now he's very good at making his own style that makes him maintain Christian physique. I could testify to every which point that you brought out but this should be too long and not fair to others. I am so enjoying these videos and so glad that I found your Channel and hopefully I can learn some tips as I go along. Thanks so much for sharing and God bless you.

The stuff on the side of the road is crazy sometimes, the other day I seen a beautiful wicker sofa, perfect condition , just put out with the trash .
