Hammer Making Tools Hammer Tongs Part 1

- Hi, I'm Andy and Welcome to FORGE WRIGHT.
This video is Part 1 of the final video in the series of making the tools required to make your own hammers at the anvil with no power hammer, press or striker.
I start with a 16mm square bar 500mm long and make the blanks for a set of hammer tongs inspired by Dan Moss over @ Trust Me Im a Blacksmith.
I'm still developing my skills at making tongs so they are far from perfect but every time we as beginners attempt what we are yet to master we take another step closer to achieving our goals.
Part two will be shaping the nibs, setting the rivets and the final fit up.
Thanks for watching this video and if you enjoy it please give it the Thumbs Up and make sure you Hit the Subscribe Icon and Share with your friends.

"..but every time we as beginners attempt what we are yet to master we take another step closer to achieving our goals." You said that right Andy. mine are still uglier than homemade sin on Sundy but they'll do for me. Good job sir...!!
Thanks Oljames I hope I can make these tongs look like something other than 'Sunday Sin' LOL, but if not as long as they can pick up a hammer billet that's ok as well. Thanks for watching 👍⚒
Good job, Andy! Cheers!
Thanks Martin they are coming along ok I think. 👍⚒
Hey mate I'm home so can comment. Well Done, I hope you don't mind me giving an opinion about the set downs, just want to help. That second one and you talked about a 30 deg or something and you got that awful gauge or cold shut. Yeah mate, just hold it flatter on the anvil and just concentrate on the 45 deg one. i.e. When you go straight do do the second set down and then turn left for those who are left handed holding the tongs, then move it 45 deg to the left. Hope that makes sense I can do a vid you you with close up if that will help mate. All a learning curve. Can't wait till the next vid.
Hey Len, welcome home mate. Yer that makes perfect sense Len. I only tried that 30° tilt as I watched Dan Moss do it that way on the hammer tongs video he made that I based these tongs off and he actually said tilt it 30° in his video. But hey he is so experienced he can do that without getting the gauge I got. If you notice I didn't get that on the second reign as I was much more careful after the first stuff up lol
@@andywright2606 Thanks mate, Yeah I went and looked at that I think he meant hold it up off the angle at say 30 deg. The other thing I forgot to mention and Dan mentions in some of his tong video's. Is when you give it the first few whacks. make sure you push it into the anvil and for the 2nd one hold in back to you against the anvil. Yeah the second tong was good aye. Good on ya mate, let me know if you want me to do a vid for you.
@@andywright2606 Oh hahah another this you might want to think about putting some round radius on part of the edge of the anvil near side and Offside.
@@lenblacksmith8559 Yer actually I was planning on doing that as it's still quite sharp. Just going to do it on a section near side and far side.
@@andywright2606 Yeah that's all I did some on the near side and some round on the offside.
