    Farmers are racing to grow and sell the perfect apple, one with the best texture, the best crunch, the best flavor - even an apple that won’t brown.
    The most innovative apples on the market are patented, trademarked, and have catchy names, logos, and slogans. And consumers have shown they’re willing to pay a premium price for an apple that guarantees a flavor-packed bite.
    Watch the video above to learn more about why Red Delicious apples have dominated the market for so long (despite less-than-sublime taste) and how it all changed when the Honeycrisp sparked consumer demand for a superior tasting apple.

      Australia has extremely stringent biosecurity and phytosanitary restrictions, so a lot of branded apples such as Jazz, Envy, Pink Lady and Pacific Rose/Queen from NZ have been unable to enter the market. Just finished reading "The Botany of Desire" which gave a lot of attention to American apples. What's really interesting is that the breeds we eat represent only a tiny fraction of the apple gene pool - I mean the cultivated gene pool, not even considering wild trees. There are so many rare apples that few have ever tasted. ...we might have to soon though, monocultures have a tendency to spontaneously go extinct.

      Theres nothing inherently wrong with genetically modifying food through selective breeding. Although, when only one type of plant is used and bred without any variety, it becomes prone to being completely wiped out by a disease it is weak against. Have you heard of the potato famine? I believe it was caused by similar reasons.
      Genetic diversity helps prevent a large amount of one crop being wiped out or becoming insecticide resistant. I used to think anti-GMO people were crazy, but if you actually listen to what some of the more educated people have to say, then you might change your mind. If youre interested in hearing it better than i could ever explain it, search GMO kurzesgat

  • @KyleLi
    @KyleLi 5 років тому +16

    Personally, I'm just worried about the coming lack of genetic diversity as strains in apple growth that are inefficient for taste and growth are removed over time despite their importance in preventing diseases or improving plant immunities.

    • @maninredhelm
      @maninredhelm 5 років тому +6

      The added costs of patents and trademarks should make sure that generic breeds can compete by being lower price. That in turn should actually increase genetic diversity over what we've had in the past. With patented apples, even if you don't sell as many as generic apple growers, the orchard can stay in business because they can charge more per apple and some people will pay more. Whereas if it's all generic, you're more likely competing purely on efficiency. If you have two boxes that are just labelled "apples" without trademarks, and one is $1 while the other is $2, people won't buy the $2 ones even if they're secretly better, because it's too hard to distinguish them.

      @guinness: my point exactly. this is such rampant capitalism that it's actually counter-productive - anyone remember software patents? and while it's a slight improvement that there is competition now, why can't we leave the simple things be simple? it's like me patenting my genome so anyone who produces an offspring using it will have to pay me royalties.. lol think how rich i'd be in a few centuries..

      When I visited a nunnery I was allowed to pick some apples from an ancient looking apple tree in their back yard. I never had anything like them, the aroma was intoxicating and slightly herbal, and the flavor was deep and complex.
      Supermarket apples seem rather flat in flavor in contrast. I wonder if that has anything to do with how long (and how) apples are stored before they end up in the supermarket.

    The "rigorous standards" will cause food waste from apples not "up to standard". Consumers and producers need to be more accepting of all the eatable results.

    • @annieschwartz3701
      @annieschwartz3701 5 років тому

      Mythic IQ nah, the ones that don’t pass standard can be sold like generic (see Pink Lady vs Cripps Pink 3:04). Plus, if you’re paying money for something, you have the expectation that it will be good, and worth the money. I’m not buying apples that taste worse to prevent food waste. That doesn’t accomplish anything except wasting my money on something I will not enjoy. You. Any male people buy an inferior product. Maybe the “waste apples” can be donated to food banks or school lunch programs. Lord knows those need more vegetables.

      @@TheGrandOptimist95 Sorry I didn't try to make it political but there's not really a good way to point that out otherwise. At the end of the video they said that fruits and veggies might go up in price but in turn they would be better products. That by definition is a free market idea. I wasn't trying to make a political statement, I was just trying to give props to Vox (a generally left leaning company) for being positive about something that is associated with the right. It shows journalistic maturity so I just wanted to give them credit. No harsh feelings btw. My comment can obviously be interpreted as politically charged and it makes sense why someone could get mad at that.

    The Rome apples are my favorite along with Fuji and Galla apples. The Rome apples are like a somewhat but a sweet but regular apple like a Galla. They are usually a burgundy red and have red lines inside of the apple themselves. My only peeve about them is the tough skin, and you can’t have any syrup or honey with them, basically anything sweet

    Oh good my math teacher just gave me a lecture on apples today like for real XDXD
    So we just finished a test and when the teacher was collecting the papers this guy just randomly asked him something about his favourite apple or something IDK but we spent the rest of the lesson having a serious class discussion about apples and brewing apple ciders and then yeast and somehow got to the stage where we ended the lesson talking about grapes lol
    Yes I know I'm lucky but on the other hand we have a science teacher whose cologne smells like full-cream milk powder and shouts at me with a mouthful of food *and* when he was our homeroom teacher, spent *fourty-five* minutes *literally arguing* with us and getting all *sarcastic* over his insistence of the girls wearing formal skirts for our concert performance. We were *dancing* around to pop he didn't really expect us to agree on flashing our panties on stage did he?

    Where are the cons of such practices?????? If you guys were so limited in the depth and coverage of content due to your sponsor(s), that's just unfortunate. However, if this was due to the "recommended" time limit of a normal VOX episode or basically almost any other reason, this is a major hindsight on your end. I love your videos and I really appreciate the great work you guys do over there, but seriously this episode has such gaping holes in its content that I believe I, as a member of the community watching this video, should bring this up at least in the comments section. (I am also aware that VOX's Climate Lab has made a video on food wastage and a part of it, if my memory serves me correctly, does address this issue. So, maybe at least briefly mention the general cons of such practices and also direct them to that video from climate lab or something.) At this day and age of such polarity in the social structure all over the world, lets promote looking at things from a more balanced perspective.
    Edit: Just checked Climate Lab's video and they only seem to touch on it as that is not the main point of their video. This is all the more the reason for you guys to let the world know what the consequences of such stringent selection criterion does to our society.

      Some of the apples aren't that easy to grow and maintain (honey crisp, while delicious, are a pain to harvest and keep in a decent state due to how delicate they are, so they don't bring in as much revenue). Too many orchards of the same fruit leads to limited biodiversity. Very bad if they all catch the same disease.
      It's always best to grow a few generic wild apples here and there so the apples won't go the way of the banana.
