Please do the Fiat 124 Spider! I’m mostly through my first resto-a ‘72-and it’s really a great car. The styling, the Lampredi engine, the rally heritage, Abarth etc make this an awesome choice for those who want to restore a classic but maybe don’t have tens of thousands of dollars.
    Thanks for another great video!

He showed two photos of a fiat spider but only mentions it in passing towards the end, surprising since it's considered like the cousin of the Alfa spider, both pininfarina designed, both DOHC 4cyl, both more or less unchanged for multiple decades, and they share some parts as well. alfa is a little prettier in the front but the fiats got a more unique rear end with subtle winged fenders.

@@zane_sporrer_design Yes, the rear is my favorite. The designer, Tom Tjaarda, had used that shape in the Corvette Rondine concept, but of course that never was produced. He snuck it into the design of the 124 Spider, and it looks great.

The Alfa Spider really showed the world that you don't buy an Alfa with your brain. It costs more, it does less, but it sure as hell feels a lot better to have it.

PS - A video on the history of Honda would be amazing (I drive a 2013 fb6)

There were actually 2 Alfa Spiders you missed before the 4c from the 2000s. There was a Spider based on the Alfa Brera (the Final just "Spider"), and another on the 8c, if you're counting the 4c Spider. I'm speaking from the UK though

I can't say if the series 1 Spider was designed in a wind tunnel, but the series 2 definitely was, as it lead to the kamm tail and the lower more steeply raked windscreen.

alfa introduced a 1.8L engine version in 1967 and called that the 1750 veloce. the early spiders have to be driven to really appreciate the magic of the handling. it goes round corners better than most cars at that time. Its fluid and reassuringly fun.

I own a 3rd gen Spider. It’s the favorite car I own. Even more than my V8 AMG. It’s the femininity that I love + the driving experience. Cruising through the countryside of West Virginia and Pennsylvania. I think it makes me look happy! Which I am!

the reason today's car design are more angular and "masculine" is because today's men have fragile masculinity, i always loved mazda's car because they have a cute face like the nc miata or rx8 and their 2010s line up

The best thing about the Alfa and its contemporary Italian competition, is that they beg you to flog them. As the revs go up, they become more and more happy and willing. So responsive - so fun! One of the weaknesses of the Alfa, though, is that I think the oil sump on these things was typically about 3 inches off the pavement - Watch those speed bumps!

My Daihatsu Copen is an achingly beautiful, very feminine little roadster. She's so feminine, a young Japanese woman loudly reminds me to put on seat belts, lock the car etc etc, in curt Japanese. I'm a huge fan of soft design language in sports cars. But also reliable lol. Cheers from Australia Bart.

Hi Bart. This comment is not on you. But for people who think they know car design. The term "feminine design" refers to the styling. The cars looked "sexy". These days the designs originate from some drug-induced fever-dreams of over-dosed junkies trying out their computer graphics programs, after a night on the tiles. None of the contemporary designs will be sought after in 20 or 30 years from now. "Sexy" feminine car design is TIMELESS. Like women. If car is not sexy - it is a piece of metal with an engine. A piece of shit that you can drive. Like men.

I work at the Pininfarina wind tunnel as an aerodynamicist, I can ask around to see if we have anything in the archives about the ossso di seppia doing wind tunnel testing. Any testing would have been done with a scale model as the full scale wind tunnel didn’t open until 1972. We have a bunch of scale aerodynamic models of other cars from the sixties laying around so it’s definitely possible.
The third and fourth generations were almost certainly tested int he full scale tunnel which is evident from the modifications that were made.

There was a new Alfa Spider in 1994, right after the 4th gen of the old one. It was built until 2005. 2006 another Spider came out, based on the Alfa 159 Platform. It stopped production 2010 and there has not been another Spider ever since.
The 4C Spider isn't really a cabriolet, its just a 4C with a Targa roof.
Of course being in the US you missed half of that and Wikipedia is so much work to read.

I really enjoy Bart's videos. I'm stunned, however, by the "feminine" characterization of so many of the cars in this video. It doesn't matter but just to be clear, I'm straight hetero male. I would characterize these cars as soft, not feminine. They're beautiful but the evoke speed, even if they weren't always particularly fast. Even 2024 Alfas are soft, especially relative to all the sharply angular competition--competition cars that have things glitz randomly glued onto them and protuding from the body for no reason at all except to create an irrelevant ugly angle. Were the Austin Healey Bugeye or the 3000 considered feminine? The old Shelby Cobra? The Datsun 240z? I don't think so. Maybe the Miata although in handling it is a true sports car. Guess I'm a luddite but i think the designs of most modern cars are basically styling exercises that are just ugly. I've got a 2011 Saab 9-5 Aero. Curvy, fast, fun to drive. Unfortunately, at least for me, GM cheaped it out then shoveled into the graveyard. Anyway Bart, you do great stuff and I like that you have an old Triumph 500. I rode a BSA Royal Star (500cc) through Europe a long time ago--what fantastic fun that was. I brought it home even though it was useless on Interstate highways.

  • @citronr1

NO. You have goone one Alfa Spider too far. The Alfa Romeo Giuletta & Giulia SpIder available from 1957 to 1965. Those were direct descendants of THE MOST BEAUTIFUL POST WAR TWO SEATER SPIDER THE LANCIA AURELIA B24S SPIDER WITH ALL BUT ONE PRODUCED IN 1955. Lucky me had one 1962 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider, one 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider Veloce and finally my Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider (chassis 1077) with all but one sold only in 1955. From 1956 to 1959, Lancia modified the Spider into the "pretty enough" but far more ordinary Lancia Aurelia B24S Convertible to satisfy the main US importer Hoffman who insisted that the Aurelia offer roll up windows to Americabns thus turning the once extraordinarily stunning car into a slightly fancier but also ordinary Alfa Romeo 2000/2600 Convertible lookalike ... a real design blunder. So if you're hesitant ti pony up the nearly 2,000,000 US dollars for a Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider, you may be able to put together $75,000 to $90000 for a very nice Alfa Romeo Giulia or Giulietta Spider. Try to find a 1965, then only Giulia Spider with disc brakes.
