  • Let's talk about oily scalps, dry hair and ends and so much more. The truth is there are a multitude of reasons that you may be struggling with oily scalps and dry hair. But with that there are the common reasons that you may be struggling with oily hair or what you think is oily hair, but is often just from too much oil production from your scalp. So let's talk about the ways we can have healthier hair care routines to help solve our oily scalp problem and fix your dry, damaged hair - or your "oily hair" as what we commonly refer to it as. But we'll be diagnosing this problem from the scalp first.
Also also, less washing is ok if you are rocking a blow dry - and also when I said wash brushes weekly thats a lot so like monthly is totally fine 💁🏻❤️

Can anyone HELP!! I cut all my hair off. After I had my beautiful baby I had some hair loss. So I buzzed it all. Iv been washing my hair with my face wash. Wall iv been doing my skin care on my head for 1.5y now. My patchy spots are gone. I’m ready to start growing it out. I want to do it right and I don’t know where to start. What do I use. I’m nominally just a cheapest shampoo will do girly.

These are great tips for most people, but some people like me truly do just have oily hair. I wash it 2 or 3 times a week, avoid sulfates and silicones, and put zero product in my hair. It’s still super oily 12 hours after a wash. If this is you too, don’t feel bad ❤

    • @luckyDancer100

I can make my wash day last for 4 to 5 days without oily roots by spraying a dry shampoo every night before putting my hair in a sleep cap. It soaks up the oil before the oil has a chance to become visible.
Even my short fringe makes it without me needing to re-wash.
I do recommend finding a dry shampoo which doesn't give any tinted residue. I use L'Oreal Air Volume Dry Shampoo. It has no visible residue & using it before my roots get oily works brilliantly for me.

I recommend using shampoos with sulfates bc it actually cleanses your scalp. Bit of course only like once a week cause it can be drying if used too often but once a week or even every other week will probably help. Also there’s the inkey list salicylic acid scalp treatment that could help!

Thank you for justifying the “double wash!” As a gray haired curly girl, I usually wash every 5-7 days, and have to double up to get product out! I have been told by well-meaning, friends and hairdressers that I should only need to wash once. It’s just nice to get the facts from one who knows soooo much about hair / skin care! Finally got to a good place with not overwashing, my best trick is to use conditioner around day 2-3 instead of shampoo, but kind of giving it a gentle scrub. Every single one of my stylists I've had asked me to flip my hair over while they dry it because it's so fine. Be aware, if you have heavy wet hair on top of that freshly blown under hair, it will flatten right back out. I usually do it twords the end of the drying process.
Just be sure you don't fry a single spot by holding it there too long.

When I started working from home, I pretty quickly switched up my shower routine and I definitely noticed an improvement in the oiliness of my hair after a couple months. And then I started using this shampoo bar which made everything about my hair feel better. But because my hair is so thin and fine, I am still super aware of the oil and I still have to wash it every other day if I plan on leaving my house at all, lol. But I'm definitely going to try the oil treatment because I would like a little more control over the situation!

I grew up being taught to wash my hair daily, with cheap shampoo like prell and suave. I chose based on the scents, and was never taught how to care for my hair. I air dried it, slept on it wet. My mother pinned me down and chopped off my hair into an ugly bob from 5 years old to when I physically fought her at 11. At that point I didn't let anyone touch my hair. In high school I washed daily, but with the wrong products and was shamed for being greasy, but never taught. In college I copied my friends, who were using shampoo made for more curly dry hair. Finally I decided I just have oily hair and I bought clarifying shampoos that I used daily. I'm just now starting to challenge the idea that my hair is innately greasy and learn more about hair care. It took until my mid 20s to really start figuring it out. I now have enough days off and the opportunity to decide to wash my hair before work if I really need to, so I've been experimenting with skipping days, overnight heatless curls, blow drying on cool etc to see how my hair responds. I finally actually like my hair and feel pretty most days😊

    Love your personality on camera.
I'd consider consulting a board certified dermatologist about this though. An oily scalp is more about genetics, diet, topical ingredients, environmental exposure, hormonal fluctuations, and hygiene practices like you mentioned (shampooing effectively, touching your hair less, cleansing frequency, clean towels and styling tools, etc).
Sebum production is simply a biological function, not a response to whether you've shampooed recently or not.
Personally, I've played around with shampooing frequency and I just can't go without washing every day or every other day at most. Using a salicylic acid shampoo semi-regularly seems to leave my scalp feeling pretty clarified during oiler times.
I also don't think dry shampoo should be a frequent go-to for most people. It's not a cleansing agent as it's marketed, it's cost prohibitive for many, and can be really irritating to the scalp and respiratory system causing more problems. With an oily scalp, I find it's best to use only in a pinch to freshen up midday/event strictly to help maintain your hair style, but it's not a rinse and lather shampoo replacement.

Will JVN be producing a dry shampoo in the future? I hope so!
Is there a dry shampoo you recommend? I’ve only ever used Batiste due to them having a dry shampoo for darker hair. Open to recommendations!

Jonathan recommended around 8:55 using the JVN conditioner that had aloe leaf juice, which reminds me: a dermatologist on yt recommended to *not* use conditioners with oils in their ingredient list, because that can contribute to your hair looking oily faster… so aloe leaf juice is a nice alternative for delivering moisture to the scalp. I haven’t been _regularly_ conditioning my scalp for a while, just focusing on my lower shaft and ends, so I’m very curious about trying a volumizing conditioner for my scalp. I’ve seen dermatologist on yt recommending salicylic acid shampoos and pre-poos treatments, as well as clarifying shampoos to treat an oily scalp, I’m curious what Jonathan’s perspective is on those recommendations. I appreciate the wealth of other thoughtful tips provided though and can’t wait to see how they work for me!! 💖💖

My hair did not use to be overly oily. Since my late teens early 20s it has progressively worsen over the years (I have even lost half of my hair density). I kid you not I have tried "retraining" my hair. I went over 6 months washing my hair every other 3rd/4th day and it's still excessively oily. I have tried all these tips over the years with no results 😢. Do you have any other advice?

This sounds like it might be related to hormones or diet or something internal. You might want to check your hormone or thyroid levels. I believe there are home tests available these days at a drugstore.
I have always had very fine, prone to oily hair. When I was in grade school, I used to flip my hair over in sections and dust (used a makeup brush) the tiniest amount of baby powder (or cornstarch) on the roots, just to absorb some of the awful greeseiness that would build up literally overnight. It's gotten much better in my adult years, and I've discovered other products that are less risky.

I started using a frizz free shampoo for 2 months and my scalp has become sooooo oily. I haven't had this much oil since I was a teen. Can the wrong shampoo really do that in is it something else? I follow all of these tips already. My routine hasn't changed.

You're like my hair Mom! At 36, I'm still trying to figure out how to handle my thick curls. I am a construction inspector and work outside everyday with a hardhat on. At the end of the day it's a sweaty mop of dirt grime. How do I handle it when I HAVE to wash it everyday?!?!? I'm dying here and might shave it all off 🙄 I absolutely love my job but it's killing my locks.

love u but there are just ppl with greasy hair. i have had very greasy hair since i was a young child. i have never heat treated or dyed my hair in my life (in my mid 20s now) and for 4 years i was washing my hair twice a week and following most if not all of these tips at time. i have very fine and thin pin straight hair. even after these years of trying techniques, my hair was still getting noticably greasy about 6 hours after washing. i now wash my hair twice a day before bed and when i wake up as my hair is greasy by the morning time but also is very greasy by bed time, making me feel gross. i now use no products in my hair besides shampoo and my hair looks and feels the most healthy it ever has.

I've been suffering from hair loss and flakey scalp especially along the hair line (caused by the product). After seeing the wonders JVN did on queer eye I hoped I could finally feel secure about my hair. After a month my scalp is still itchy and flakey. It's not working 😭 JVN please help me beautiful. I'm at a loss. I had to wear a hair piece for my wedding just so I could wear my vale. I long to have bangs but I have no hair up top. 🥺

I have a question for us boys and girls that really WANT healthy luscious hair like yours and want to go days on end without needing to wash our hair but don’t know how. For example. I work as a ups package handler who sweats her ass off in 110 degree steel hot boxes loading 5-150lb boxes into trailers. So… needless to say when I get off work it looks like I jumped in a pool fully clothed. Oh, and! The dust floating in the air that gets kicked up in the trailers latch to my sticky body and hair (literally turns into mud). I could go on and on about all the bugs (since we are down by the river) and such that lead to the decision that I feel like…. I neeeeeed to wash my hair everyday.. 😢 heeelp, is there anything us laborers can do that work in extreme heat and nastiness?
