Making stone fishing weights or sinkers

- Using stones as fishing weights has to be the oldest fishing hack there is so I thought I would put my spin on. Does it help you catch more fish? I personal don't care it was just a bit of fun.

Very pretty sinkers. For those that don't have all this equipment: I find that it is a heck of a lot faster and easier to just wrap a stone in sewing thread. You can wrap in a metal loop if you want, but I just use a loop in the thread. I fish in an area where everyone loses loads of lead. Stones work great (humans have been using them since time immemorial), and cotton thread is certainly better to be leaving in the river than lead!
and with basic tool and a softer stone you can just make some cut on both side to make it more secure.
stone sinker would also (i think) be less prone to get stuck between small cracks and small stones.
You’re a legend, dude. For rock and surf, I always feel “un-ecofriendly” when lead sinkers get caught and break off and remain in the ocean. This is the solution.
Great Idea, good video. Using stones you're not only saving money, you're very variable with the weight you need and you dont pollute the nature with lead.
Awesome idea. Instead of leaving lead at the bottoms of our lakes and streams.Well done and thanks for posting.
Great job on the stone sinker! Environmental friendly! Thanks for inspiring me to do the same.
Seeing as in the UK we often see videos encouraging us to 'drop the lead' these would be a great alternative. I'm off to the beach!
you r not just a fisher man , to make these diy and with that filming quality , u r an artiest !
Not the first time i have seen these used but the first time i have seen the fabrication made so simple. Thanks.
Spectacular idea. Many tanks from mother earth. Your idea promotes low-impact, low pollution, and responsible behavior.
this is not just a good idea its life changing.
The environment thanks you for not littering the ocean bottom with leads. If u lose these, they're merely pebbles from nature! Great stuff.
This is better than putting lead in water and fishes. Good job man!
As a "thinking angler" I found this very interesting, always looking at ways to fool wary fish and I daresay a tad less expensive than the ones I purchased at a tackle shop. I also purchased some a while back shaped and painted to look like mussels but they are far too nice to risk casting out with the chance of maybe losing one . My grandkids will probably auction them off when I go to that great fishery in the sky and think to themselves how eccentric their granddad was lol.
This has always been part of the joy of fishing for me... making your own stuff. When I was a teen in the 70's my parents were skint, so any tackle I wanted I had to make myself or go without. The satisfaction to be had from recycling materials into fishing gear far outweighs shopping with a credit card and paying ridiculous sums of money for stuff you can easily make yourself. Same goes for bait... bollocks to paying 4 or 5 quid for a small pot of boillies in some exotic flavour.
Thanks sir, one of the most beautiful video about fishing i ever saw
This is the first video I've seen of yours, and it definitely won't be the last. The video itself was enjoyable to watch with no unnecessary footage or waffle. There was obviously a lot thought that went into making this and you made this process look so simple. So I'm going to try to make a weight using your method. Thank you so much from a fisherman in France. Top man !!
thanks
Easier way to do this without drills. Just take any stone (of correct weight shape does not have to be perfect). Create a paper mold and pour in some quick set cement with the stone hidden inside. At the top embed a paper clip for your fishing line.
The essential key to doing this is a "HAMMER DRILL" to pop the hole in the stone. A regular electric drill is futile. Good video. Also you can use fish hooks for wire
Awesom Awesome Awesome ! Easley in the top 5 of the most valuable videos in the fishing community
Stones are 100% Less toxic than lead !!!
Great Idea !
true, but they still hurt if you get hit on the head with one, I know lol
@@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman lol
Wow you should join the DIY Tackle group on Facebook as they would really appreciate your work 👌👌👌
@@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman I was Salmon fishing next to a guy one time and he got snagged up and was pulling super hard on 25 lb test and the 3 oz lead came right back and hit him in the forehead ..an
indentation of the weight on his skull!
Smmmmmmaaaaackkkkkkk!
@Sparka yep...brutal boomerang factor!....Everyone is down there at the hole right now....Salmon are in Town! When that happened....I was wincing!Stay safe! Eric Underwood class of 81 Downey High School California
They need to do this in Hawaii. There is so much old lead weights all over the reefs.
I use to use 2p's for weights. Glue two or three together and just drill a fine hole. Your way is so much better than my defacement.
yep but think of the luck you will get by throwing money in water, cheers
this has got to be worth a billion likes it saves the planet and does what it says on the tin well done
What a great UA-camr with awesome tips!! No dancing, no singing or shouting in front of his camera, just doing the job with a perspective explanation and respect to watchers. You are some man!!!
I've been making stone ledgers for years. I use a large swivel and cut one loop off and then gorilla glue the swivel to the top of the stone. holds up really well and the glue is totally waterproof and if I did loose a stone there plenty more around.
Eu de ani de zile am renunțat, motivul la recuperarea răsucește firul.
That is a really great idea because you can make them really heavy or really light
I`ve been buying and using "stonze" weights for years. This will certainly save me a few quid.......many thanks for sharing it .
Nice Idea, and a cheap and easy way to make sinkers. Would work well for still water, but not for moving water. The specific gravity of that stone is probably 2-2.5 where as lead is just over 11. In a moving water situation the rock would move down current significantly farther, even a much larger rock.
That's a such a great idea. Well done, very environmentally friendly and super stealth so fish won't see any lead!
Andy's Fishing you got active on comments lately, Andy! Good to see we watch the same channels :)
I've been a fan for a while, and comment some times.
Hey Andy, love your vids
i wasn't really trying to save the planet I just could not be bothered cleaning out the lead smelter and messing round with that for a few weights so i went to buy some and they cost a small fortune and they put a coating on them to look like pebbles so I thought why not use some pebbles, thanks
The Handmade Fisherman well, i have to say that this is how most good ideas start as... i would love to do this too, but i dont havr the resources for a personal shop yet... but out of curiosity, do you think tgis will work for egg style (center hole slip) weights from the same material? and would this also work with commercial landscaping gravel of the same size?
Great idea! When I was a kid I would sometimes tie rocks onto my line for sinkers.
Heck yeah, and we'd tie on sticks for floats!
Nice! Especially in snaggy areas where you lose sinkers. So much better. Will try.
I just found this video after searching and searching to make my own low cost lead sinkers...bam!
Thank you😀
Nice, I agree about the weight being environmently friendly. Adn you can never run out of stones! :)
sooo true
Great fun project to teach kids about making their own fishing equipment but also weights! Cool idea! Thx
Down the beach and then into the workshop! Thanks for another great video and idea.
thanks
This is the coolest idea ever. Wondering how come no one thought of it earlier. It would have saved so many waters from lead pollution. And to anglers, it would have been sooo much less costly. And in the water, there is nothing more natural than a rock like this... The benefits are countless.
it is a very old idea, people have been doing this in one way or another for a long time
That is a great idea and better for the environment when you get stuck.
Awesome, I don’t know why it is, but there’s just something about making your own stuff, even though it takes time can’t even save money, but just knowing that you’re the one that made everything is such a good feeling 🎣🤟🏼
I see a shortage of smooth stones coming soon 😱
Awesome Idea and Great Job 👍
Being doing this for years.Glad someone put up a cool video about it. Thanks, makes explaining to my friends easier..👍👍
This is a great idea. No led in our waters. I fish all the time. I am going to do this thanks for the idea. ;)
Possibly the best edited video on UA-cam.
I used these with the Team Catfish weight slides to make a ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxdmsDj7fQXe77DC0l7P7ua8B3PiESUubM Carolina rig and they were perfect for the ponds I fish. I have also used them to make 3 way rigs and these work perfectly. Haven't had any issues with them snagging in rocks or in weeds yet.
Love this idea! Less pollution better for the water and us.
I make heavy casting weights with 1" hex nuts. While boring out stones may be cheaper if you have the tools, using the nuts is easier, and with epoxy can be ganged. I I tie a loop in one end of a piece of mono and a uni thru the hole with the other end. Casts easily and far, and probably more accurately than an egg sized stone. They do rust but I've never found that to be a deterent to use
That's a fantastic idea ,one witch i will definitely implement into my carp fishing 👍👍thanks for sharing 👏
Thanks for this, I've been thinking about using stones for an inline lead with pva bags, going to have a try this weekend 👍
Cheers Paul great fun. I have made a few of those but the flintstones along the coast here are tricky to drill. I collect stones with holes already throught them too but then the work emphasis goes on the time you spend looking instead of drill bits, so swings and roundabouts really. Either way it's better than putting lead in the river.
I found a good patch of sandstone pebbles but i only wanted a handful of weights, but a piece of something got in which the drill would not really touch probably something with quartz in
this is a good idea, I use concrete blocks for deep fishing 800 feet plus, if I lose the concrete block no problem, it just becomes structure for fish, I carry about 10 for one full day of fishing, I lose about 6 to 8 blocks but I'm only using 20 lb test mono
Hell55 Drake wow
that's nothing, while fishing i bring me self a boulder with a weight of 3.5Tons as a sinker
Is lime not made by nature?
I guess now I have a frame of reference for when someone says "that weighs 10 stone",
I am not sure about using puddy vs liquid epoxy unless there is enough undercutting to provide a mechanical lock
Nice job as usual
Just going to get into carp fishing after 30 years away from fishing. Being a tight Yorkshire man I was thinking of doing this as I'm damn sure I ain't going to be dropping expensive proper weights on the rigs lol
Brilliant one search and found this.
The two part milliputty is a great idea as I was thinking of two part liquid type epoxy and how messy that would be 🤔
I started making my own fishing tackle when I lived in Yorkshire, maybe there is something in the water, cheers
@@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman lol possibly
Happy New Year and tight lines
I love this. Enviro friendly. Thank u for sharing.
I will make some Thanks for the idea
This is what we should all be using for snaggy shore fishing ! No brainer. Saves dumping harmful lead in our shores
To be honest i have used stone weights when i first started fishing over 40 years ago as i couldn't afford lead sinkers. As i mentioned going on my experience the stone sinkers cost me more in the long run due to loosing lots of line due to snags and tangles. Since then i bought a sinker mould for a few dollars and i get as much lead as i want from construction sites for free. With this mould i can make sinkers for free. I am not mocking your idea i just think its impracticable when it comes to fishing
have lead sinker molds also, but in the uk you cannot use lead weights under an ounce
Sinks like a stone. Brilliant.👍
Brilliant thank you for sharing that's a great idea for gifts and it's natural!!! Thank you and good luck fishing my friend!!!
Man there are so many stones like that at my beach here in California. Im going to make a bumch of these for surf fishing. So much better than tossing lead
Nice lil workshop u got there
Great job. Very enviromentaly friendly.
Quality products are well worth the money !
I'm going to have to try making some drop-shot weights. A digital scale will help determine the right size rocks.
great idea! especially considering the price of lead sinkers these days
I have to admit my main motivation was financial, i generally go the tackle shop to talk nonsense and spend as little as possible, cheers
I used my mother in law worked great.
Questa è proprio una bella idea. Non mi era venuta in mente malgrado vado a pescare in spiagge di ghiaia. Complimenti e grazie per il tutorial 😉👏
That's kool definitely going to make some
Very cool! I love how you bend the ends of the wire to act like barbs in the epoxy, very clever.
One of the coolest videos I’ve seen!!!
Brilliant! Hopefully the new weights in the future....
Good and environment friendly idea! I will try it.
Many thanks!
I like this a LOT more than all the lead that gets left at the beach, the motion of the water grinds it up and now you've got lead pollution.
Great video great for Carp & Barbel fishing too thanks for sharing!
cheers, i did loose one of these fishing off the reeds with safety release clip, and I was all disappointed until i realised it was just a stone and i landed the carp
Absolutely brilliant
Great idea; with so many anglers using “drop off” lead systems this has to be more environmentally friendly. There are a few problems though; stones are not as heavy as lead and casting them is not as accurate. However, for shorter range or dropping rigs from boats stones should work ok. After seeing your method of making them I’m going to try myself 👍
I use pallatrax stonze they look very similar I got my record cast off a 2.5oz a couple days ago at just over 100yards 😂they look like they won’t cast but the right stone will do the job
Great video, thank you for sharing!
This needs to go viral
let us hope, thanks
Tench are very sneaky so the stone works well here. Good video 😁🍀👍
Absolutely brilliant!! well done.
Awesome! !! Great video, I will try and make some for myself thanks for sharing your tips 😊👍👍
Well done brilliant stuff. I use a hot glue gun to produce almost the same design. If you warm up the stones in the oven or on top of a fire it helps the glue to reach all parts . Love to see other methods though 👍.
I like your style great job
Hats off to you sir - excellent idea and demo!
it's great. the only problem is for same weight, it's much bigger than lead which makes some difficulty to cast, also makes a big noise when hitting the water.
What a great idea. Love it. Thanks.
Very environmental friendly, No Lead! excellent!
Can also use silicone mold and pour concrete and add thr hardware while concrete is still wet
Not only is this a really interesting video, the editing is very professional. Thanks for showing us how.
Thats a very cool idea! I love making anything myself. Subbed!
Beutfull
I used this a few years before
It's great to fish with that
Thanks for sharing
great idea. Thanks 👍
I was just thinking about the lead we put into the water. This is a great idea.
I really like this idea.
I’m gonna use these for a very natural looking drop shot rig.
Excellent idea, where I live its all rocks.
本物の石とは⁉️
鉛のおもりと比べて
環境問題の観点から言ってもすごくいいですね。✨✨👍
I just watched your video again and realised you are doing your fishing in rivers or lakes where the water is calm. In that case i agree stone sinkers will work as there is no turbulence in the water whereas in my case i go fishing off cliffs where the water is rough and there are big swells. Can't you make smaller sinkers than an ounce in the UK? in Australia can get moulds to make sinkers ranging from a split shot to 5 ounce. My local tackle shop sells the moulds for $12 each. If you want let me know and i will post one off to you
I love ur channel because of vids like this there so creative
Great idea! Mahalo nui.
When I lived on the Big Island of Hawai'i all I used was rock weights as the rough bottom would foul weights so buying lead got too expensive.. The rough uneven lava rock made it easy to tie a line onto. I'd use a weaker line for the rock weight so that if fouled I can break it off without losing terminal tackle.
Here on the geologically older island of Oahu smooth round river or beach rocks are easier to find so this idea should work great. Aloha.
thanks and good luck
Try that bread rig but on a chod ,you can also put a pva mesh bag with bread around the stone ,its a killer
Excellent video! It was thoroughly enjoyable, useful, and well-made. Thanks for putting it up!
I like those idea .cheap but very use full
Great for nature no lead contamination 👍👍👍⭐😀
