Inspectah Deck on Hot 97 Blackballing Wu-Tang for a Decade

- www.vladtv.com - Inspectah Deck opened up to VladTV about the events leading up to his group - and the majority of its members - being blackballed from Hot 97 for the better part of ten years.
He explained that it all started when the group initially blew off a Summer Jam show to go on tour with Rage Against the Machine, but when they realized they "couldn't afford to lose Hot 97," they came back to NYC. Inspectah Deck then revealed that after taking the stage, Ghostface Killah sealed the group's fate with the radio station by telling the crowd, "F**k Hot 97."

now we know who killed new York hip hop. hot 97!
And they tried to tell us it's where hip hop lived
Artists too
@Rico Risken In those days, Hot 97 was not weak...they had a monopoly on hip hop in the NY-NJ area.
Fuck Hot 97
Exactly
One of my all time favorite hip hop verses:
"I leave scientists mentally scared. tripple extra large, wild like rockstars that smash guitars. Poison bars from the gods, bust holes in your mirage, and catch a charge shake’em down like the riot squad. Invade your zone, ruin like ancient Rome. I span the universe and return to earth to claim my thrown."
Truth
Cris LeRoi I always thought deck was slept on, very potent lyricist, I gotta check that pete rock joint out.
Above The Clouds - GangStarr
I don't think he was slept on. I just think Ray,Ghost,ODB,Gza,Meth, and Rza were just better. In my opinion all those guys I named made better songs, while Deck just made good verses.
Other members of the wu had bolder personalities...more bravado. Deck, U-God, and Masta Killa seemed like quiet laid back dudes.
Deck had told a clear case of when keeping it real goes wrong.
That is funny right there😆
I would love to see Dj Premiere and Pete Rock produce a Deck album!!!!!!!
I wish it would happen because it would be a DOPE album plus inspectah deck is one of my favorite artist out of the whole wu tang clan.
graham lionel Now I heard Premo is doing an entire Nas album.
mansamusa2012 for real ?
graham lionel I am just telling you what I heard not sure if it's true.
DJ Premier produced the track "Let It Off" on the first Czarface record and it was dope. If you haven't heard Czarface yet you should check it out. Inspectah Deck sounds as dope as ever on it.
Wu Tang didn't need collabs when there's 9 members.
Darnell Jackson thank you I love deck but nah that extra room for guest should be filled by the more slept on members..y'all got super talented rappers in your group don't nobody care about they need the exposure
Eric DeVito YEAH
They didn't start off with money, bro..
@@oddballskull1941 oh STFU
He See's it different dipshit
Deck always had the most bomb opening verses.
Broke Ass Dollar Store Ellen best set off man in hip hop history. It is known.
Especially that verse on Raekwon album he obliterated that verse
@@pympinainezatall84 swordz yeah amazing verse
Murderous paragraphs smash yer phonograph in half, it be the inspector deck on the warpath
Hell yeah
Hot 97 still isn't that important.
At the time it was dipshit
In the 90’s and 00’s they were EXTREMELY important
They killed Flavor Unit, and cheated in competitions when ODB lost to Biggie by one vote. You know they ended the calls to prevent ODB from winning it.
Back then yeah it was
Hot 97 doesn't have the power to blackball anyone now...they had egos over there for a while because back then, if Hot 97 co-signed your shit, the rest of the nation would follow.
+Black Smith Yeah they could but it wouldn't have no effect like it did 20+ yrs ago. Too many other outlets out here Internet streaming and radio. When that that happened HOT 97 was the only hiphop station in NY. power105 didn't exist yet. Hot97 was the biggest station in the largest market, they had that power in the 90's.
They liked Method Man?
More like Angie liked Method Man
I saw Wu with Rage in the Summer of 1997 in Charlotte NC at the outside Pavilion . It was the dopest concert ever. There was a large space of grass for the people who paid a higher price for front row. When Wu came on the space wasn't yet full so RZA got on the mic about mid way through their set and said "Fck this everyone come down to the stage" . It was about 10-15 thousand people that were hyped up and we broke through security and rushed the stage and it was craziest thing I've ever experienced. Later that night on the way home the news reported that WuTang almost started a riot. It was completely exaggerated. It was nothing but love full of every race and gender in the audience. I'll never forget that concert for as long as I live.
Damn after reading this and seeing how Travis concert was a couple days ago. It probably won’t be the same for any artist
Dope💯
Lyrically perform armed robbery...flee with the lottery...possibly they spotted me..
Illest verse ever spit
Battle scarred shogun, explosion when my pen hits tremendous, ultra violent shine blind forensics
I inspect you through the future see millennium killah bees sold 50 gold 60 platinum
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hard shit
They should have stayed on tour and made their money. You live and you learn.
Look at what hot97 plays now😏😏😏
Fuq hot97🤣🤣🤣
deck that dude tho, man mad underated, uncontrolled substance is classic. ill ryhmes and beats, back when albums were anticipated, and jordans dropped once a year, source magazine was the social media, and niggas actually had to be lyrically nice to get a deal ya dig
Fya.lanski facts
Talk to dem niggas
WOW Rage Against the Machine & Wu-Tang on tour I would have loved to see that Concert !!!!
Had tickets to the Dallas show in 97. Wu Tang was replaced by the ROOTS.
Big Steve just watch Reunited video, it was shot during Rage Against the Machine tour...
It was an awesome show
I seen it..Dirty wasn't there.it was good though
and Atari! teenage riot
Inspector Decks verse on triumph was my introduction to rap. I feel terrible for young dudes that can’t understand how it felt to hear that shit for the first time!
I guess that explains why many of the artist that do interviews look forced compared to the breakfast club, & why Ebro be talkin so reckless to them. If they'll blackball WuTang imagine what they'd do to these new artists. Fuck Hot97!
This guy has some of the best openings in rap history. Salute King
Now the fans need to blackball Hot 97.
I seen Wu & Rage in NY on that early rock the bells concert shit. PE was there, Nas,Eric b n Rakim, whole list... idk bout that Europe shit but I seen Rage in Wu at once in NY so I’m grateful for that.
One of the underrated Wu members. And thanks for the Internet so we don't need payola stations to hear good music!
Where's Hot 97 Now? Wu Tang is still here!
I'm so glad the Wu didn't collab with those artists that he mentioned. Although the Nas/Prodigy/Raekwon collab was classic.... Oh well though.
Would've been nice to see a supergroup that consisted of mobb deep, ghost n rae and nas
The ghostface part was funny to me yo😂😂
Definitely sounds like Ghost
@@dominiquejones3805 he's such a hothead, my favorite rapper
That Rage/Wu tour would have been amazing
One Thing About Starks, He Gon Speak His Mind. 👐🏾
Fav Deck tune and still reload to this day... THE CITY...
"We beat up people who were writing us checks". Ha
john bissell 😂😂
That's unheard of
now that was dumb...
I love the Wu but it's obvious they not good businessmen
Trap Muzik Good and bad... cause they also innovated the record deal where a rap group gets signed and then each individual member is a free agent who can get signed by any other record label
You know Ebro had a hand in on the boyz getting block.... The old man was program director at the time.
besides a story with being with Rage Against is way better than some local radio station.
The White Van was roaming the streets lookin' for homie doe.
U no he did
Wu-Tang and Rage Against the Machine raised me this is crazy here in that they went on tour with each other its like gods collaborating. bring rage back.. Wu Tang Zach de la Rocha 4 life
Killa Bee still sold 50 Gold, 60 platinum. Fuck Cold '97. Lol!
[O.D.B voice]
_"Wu-Tang is for the kids!"_
Children*** get it right
He kinda told this story like Rick James on Chapelles show
Ohhhhhh. Explains a lot. Those behind the scenes industry stories are priceless. INS wasn't gonna speak on Starks at first, then said to himself "uck it" (full disclosure)
The WU and RATM?! What a concert THAT musta been!!
"I never got deep into the Wu Tang Thing" ?? THING???? 😠😒✋
Sin The Rebel Vlad us the biggest cornball to ever hit rap! Lmaooo typical suburban goofball
Vlad is the definition of culture vulture. There’s so many cases of his old ass not knowing much about some basic hip hop history or albums and groups
Finally they are talking about shit I have always asked myself. Why no collabs?! Tribe and Wu were my favorite always wondered that shit.
Tribe sucks dipshit
@@truthhurts79 that's not accurate. That's just your opinion, which is ok I guess. Good day sir.
@@truthhurts79 Tribe sucks so much that Busta Rhymes wanted to join the group. Yeah.
I remember going to Austin and went to see Wu and rage and Wu didn’t show up and the roots rocked in there place .It was still dope
Rebel INS one of the greatest ever
Wow. You learn something new everyday.
Giving up Rage against the Machine, for Summer Jam? Take a huge fucking L.
Wow! This is one of the realest interviews ever. Thanks Vlad!
Ghost probably had to get that off his chest. I wouldn't even be mad at him.
I would have. That cost them millions. Deck had a point. They would have been better off not going at all.
The Wu ain't really need to do collabs with the Jay-Z's or other flavors of the month that disappeared in their era, it would have seemed forced. Mobb Deep, Redman, Nas, Boot Camp Clik those collabs were natural.
I remember the interview with Star and Buckwild show and Wu Tang. and the Wu gave a very subdued almost shadey interview. that was around the time Iron Flag came out.. Raekwon, when Immobilarity came out, also had an interview with Star during that time. You could feel the tension .
Yeah Hot 97 just black balled us cause we didn't show............ Ghost said Fuck Angie and Hot 97 so they black balled us very reminiscent of Rick James grinding his feet into Eddie Murphy's couch lol
Now they see how southern artist felt
When they didn't play our music up north
Niko G truth!
Wu and Rage that is one hell of a concert.
Lmao at "stigmata"... Stigma Deck, Stigma!
So...we gonna act like inspectah didn't just lie and change his story mid-interview?
I was confused how he just changed the story lol
Lol I heard that. I'm like... Is this another time or what?
Facts lol
LynnJrMusic Well your right. but then i think he thought about it, and said to himself man I am making it seem like we didn't do anything wrong. then he cleaned it up by saying F'it i'll just tell all the details they weren't just anti wu we did fuck up and I just didn't want to say it cause it makes us look dumb.
***** no he did lie cause he said they chose to stay on tour with rage against the machine. then admits they actually left to do hot97 but ghostface said fuck Angie and hot 97 on stage so they black balled us and we couldn't go back to Europe to carry on touring with rage. so we lost out on money from the tour and couldn't get their records played on hot 97.
Inspectah deck I appreciate his honesty and openness
this guy is a legend. big up Inspectah
above the clouds!
+Chiney Charles wild like rock stars who smash guitars....
ua-cam.com/video/Ucvta7xDo_4/v-deo.html
....
The thing is is that its either international fame with a legendary Rock group or NY radio play. I dont blame them
People need to listen Deck's opening verse on "For Heaven's sake".it's superior to Triumph. I love Deck's triumph verse, but the opening bars everyone seems so impressed with are pretty easy to come up with. In high school in drama class we were reading this sophocles and since we weren't paying attention in the back we were freestyling and when they threw me "sophocles" to rhyme the first words that came out in my rhymes were socrates and philosophies and apostrophes. And we sucked we never freestyled we were just bored.
No I said back in high school now I'm 30 I can rap nothing crazy, I'm a big hip hop head and only follow real rhymers which is why I can't listen to all the new garbage coming out. Deck is great, the triumph verse is great but he has better verses, his opener on For Heaven's Sake is such a verse
omg, stop fucking lying!
In all honesty as a fan of Wu Tang and a ear for their music I honestly dont think they should have features on their music other than Redman Nas Busta and a few Wu affiliates it just takes that Wu sound out of its element
Wu tang and RATM is a sick ass concert
Listening to the old songs is just not the same like it was 25 yrs ago..or any other songs for that matter
i would like to see this rage against the machine and wu tang tour
But the collabs that the wu does have are gold.
Ghost face always calls it like he sees it
Deck Album Hot!!!
Now all I can think about is all the Wu tang collabs that coulda been 😓
They have a mystique, shit we will still never know.
Damn if Deck & Trae Tha Truth long lost brothaz lol
damn, thats depressing. id be so mad at ghost face
Right
Poisonous paragraph smash your phonograph in half it be the inspectah deck on the war path.
Michael Humphreys first class leaving mics with a cast
Causing ruckus like the aftermath when guns blast
Run fast, here comes the verbal assaulter
Rhymes runnin wild like a child in a walker
Cherchez La Ghost got AirPlay on Hot97.....Back Like That Got AirPlay.....
@ 0:43 ... I was at the Club "MUSE" back in 1993 when WUTANG CLAN was there DEEP !!!!!!,,,,,,, I was 21 years old in 1993 on that night
Instectah looks so fukn chill ahah
wil cervantes that’s that Bronx shit.
Da rebel ins . most underrated wu member besides da gza/ genius🔥🔥🔥🔥🏆
Damn. And it's funny that Hot 97 now wants to reminisce about Ghost and Rae's music when covering their verzuz. BTW Deck = best rapper without a classic solo album.
He was my favorite from the WU
Damn so WuTang had like a 5yr run
He looks like Andray Blatche lol
That Tour came to Hartford CT. I'm from HardHittinNewBritain. That tour Rage Against The Machine and WuTang was Monumental!!!! And when Killarmy and ODB came to the Sting in New Britain, I think Keith Murrey bust someone in a head with a chair.
Youth is wasted on the young, as they say. I love his perspective.
I really like how he gives the details or "being real" sabotaged their finances. Ghetto street realness has no place in business but in entertainment and street life only.
I'm a fan of Deck but when was this 10-12 yr period? Bc I've heard both Ghost and Meth played on that station. So did he mean Wu Tang as a whole or Wu Tang members?
didnt you listen ??
Hot 97 isn't paying you. I would have said the same thing. I can't remember but were any of them on a funkmaster flex mix tape?
Glad Gay Z didn't come on a Wu album. Silver shining.
Gay z indeed!!!
Deck always was my favorite Wu member
Oh wow! Deeper than the sea itself!
"As Gangsta as it was at the time" #behindthemusic
Method man had the most collabs.
I remember, it was 1997. But he forgot to mention that they also got on stage and talked about where hiphop was going in terms of the commericialized sound of the Bad Boy etc. Im paraphrasing here so dont quote me directly.
MaadAzzGang ghostface and reakwon didn't like biggie and puffy.
L1am21
When did i ask? I know. But they also went at Hot 97. It wasnt that they didnt like Biggie & Puff, just their sound. Its the typial hip-hop shit that fans do & have been doing for decades. But they also went at Hot 97 while at Summer Jam, which was the major issue.
If it was made public Hot 97 had blackballed playing the Wu, NYC would've blackballed Hot 97! Hot 97 run by Jews they aint want the original Gods shining! It had nothing to do with an onstage rant.
You just heard the man say it but ur brainwashed brain won’t allow you to hear it...😂😂😂
Made them even more of a legend
I miss the group albums. Not many groups can work it like Wu and feed off each other
more interviews like this
This is the Realiest Wu Memeber along with GZA!!! Fuck Radio...........
Vlad was so deep into hip hop yet he didn’t know Pac had died in 1996.
not to mention all the other worthy groups and artists this station has ignored for a lifetime now.
No disrespect intended to Deck, but Hot 97 definitely played "Rec Room" on the 5 o Clock Free Ride or whatever the mix show was called back in 99. I wouldn't have even known about his album if it wasn't for them. Now that I think about, Flex was playing Apollo Kids regularly around the same time. It couldn't have been that serious....
Ebro, Nigah is that you??
He said 10 to 12 years. 99 is 20 years ago.
Wu should re-release all their old music
How his story gonna change, like, 6 times in one interview..?
@Carl Rice his story changed halfway through. He obviously was thinking of some other story or forgot that they actually went back.
I would have loved a fucking tribe and wu album
alot of wisdom here
I hate to say it...but that was bad business. Two L's. Still Wu Tang Forever.
Wu Tang forever ✌🏼️
The Wu didn’t need Hot 97, the problem was, that Hot 97 was like the only Radio station playing NY Hip Hop back then. Later on other stations started to incorporate a Hip Hop Slot. Hot 97 probably still played featured spots with Wu members. I doubt that they weren’t playing cuts from R&B stars that featured Wu Members. Then again, those cuts probably came later on, well into the 2000’s.
Lol Mr Cee
