Good content and information as always carl...in my personal barbel fishing I always go with the Des Taylor approach and bait up for an hour before I wet any lines then feed small pouch fulls of pellets every 15 minutes or so...works well for me 🙂

I have been watching your instruction videos for a while now.
Your method and style of communication are, in general, clear and understandable. You support your audience, rather than a number of other video-makers who use the medium to show how good they are rather than make the subject their prioity. Well done. I have learnt an amount from you, and I've been fishing for 40+ years (badly, but....).
    You do a great job.
If you ever want to do a video on a not very good river which has a great deal of weed clogging the waterway, please come to the SUFFOLK Stour near to Sudbury, and see what I have to try to cope with. I have two knackered knees, so I am definitely a stationary angler, and I often have little choice of local locations due the the ability to get there. I have found nothing relevant on ANY fishing channel/group. Fancy a challenge?
    Ta muchly.

Want to say a quick thank you to both of you, two days ago I went coarse fishing for my first ever time, after watching your full 'fishing for beginners', float fishing, and 'knot tieing' playlists... it worked a treat!!
I went in the 'beginner' pool out of 4 pools in my area, and managed to catch a 5lbs carp within quite literally a couple of minutes! I also managed to catch a 4lbs bream, and multiple smaller tench, roaches and a tiny gudgeon!! Honestly you made fishing so much easier for me as a 25yr old who has wanted to try it sincw I was about 16 but didn't know where to start!! I can now join my mates confidently!😊🫶🫶

Brilliant this carl. As always very informative and just makes you want to get out there. I started two years ago at fisheries and park lakes using advice from people like yourself. Since i have had some great days on the Shropshire union canal. I like how natural baits such as maggot were mentioned. A good friend of mine who has helped me on my journey once said he would fish the Severn for barbel. This was late 80s to early 90s. He would find a peg and stick to it. 5 pints of maggots in before a rod! Large roach, bream and chub would come out first but with continuous feeding they would leave and make way for a good session on the barbel. Great to see these tactics you guys are sharing as my river fishing adventure is starting this year. Now closed season is over. Thank you

In almost any english feeder video anglers are using mono as mainline. Is braid with a monoleader not appropriate or just not necessary? Or just a personal choice?

Braid also has no stretch so is more likely to yank your feeder out of place than mono. And to counteract strong flow of you were to use thin braid you’re likely to have problems with getting cut off. Most bites are also obvious so might aswell use a cheaper more forgiving line you can change if you have a problem

in my area we fish for big barbel with squared shaped cheddar like cheese (like a yellow cheddar that is smoother and the taste is not so punchy for humans as "orange" cheddar) leave it a day in the sun to get that specific stink and it works so well :D

How long do you leave a rig in position? As in how long in flow does that feeder typically last before all the bait is washed out & is no longer affective? So basically roughly how often should you recast? I appreciate this will be dependent on the strength of the flow & the mix of the bait. But a rough idea?
    Also what size hooks?
Sorry if you did answer these in the video. I'm watching as I'm typing so I may not have got there yet...

Hi mate! It's so tricky to set hard rules for these things as there's so many variables. The harder you squeeze in the groundbait, the longer it'll stay in. Pellet heavy mixes will stay in longer too. I've had bait still in the feeder when reeling in two hours later! (that was with a pellet heavy mix and I squeezed it in really hard)
Personally I like to start of pinching the bait in quite lightly, to get the bait out there asap. Later in the session, i'll squeeze it in tighter to avoid filling the fish up. On a small river with low stock of barbel, I'll want to be making one cast and then waiting sometimes for an hour or more! On bigger rivers with a higher stock, like the trent or the wye, I'll cast every 20-40mins and keep a trickle of bait going in!
Size 12 up to a size 8 are all good, depends on the size of your hookbait. Maggots - 12, worms 10, pellet or spam 8. :)
      Good luck out there!

Barbel fishing can indeed be easy. Too easy, in fact. That is why I hardly fish for them these days. They are 'in fashion' (the new carp fishing), but they are not the hardest species to outwit and they are sensitive to disturbance and take a long time to recover. Many streches of certain rivers are heavily overfished, with constant pressure for 9 months of the year. There is no need for carp tactics. If there is, then it shows that the fish have been caught far too often. There is also no need for hammering the same swims for multiple catches and weighing and photographing every fish.
Angling should be about being in tune with nature. Not taming it, in a macho way, for bragging rights and Instagram accounts. If we lose sight of that, then we are merely bringing forward the day when we are not allowed to fish any more.

Barbel fishing doesn't have to be a big river, big lead business. I fish a river where two rods could practically touch in the middle. Feeders are less successful than leads, and leads less productive than freelining. Also very snaggy, and the fish are very smart.
