- Family and friends of an Osprey woman who was hit and killed by a Sarasota County deputy as she rode her bicycle home from her job at Walmart are trying to cope with her loss as the Florida Highway Patrol investigates the crash.

Especially when your riding at night, illegally without a light, and not waiting for the green light. Bikers think they have a special set of rules that allows them not to follow the laws. Sorry to see something like this happen, but this deputy is going to have to live with this the rest of his life.

I know a lot of people are struggling. But as a man, I would do whatever it takes (three jobs even), to make sure my wife wasn't out there walking/ riding or traveling alone at night.
Same thoughts I was having bro. Ain’t no way would I have my wife working at night and riding a bike home while I’m home with the child. I’d rather work multiple jobs

you do know that as willing as you are, there are 24 hrs in a day... Do you not plan to sleep or spend time with wife/kid, and do you take into consideration of other time used such as travel time, food etc.

This is why I ride my bike on the sidewalk...I've already been hit twice by drivers!
30+ years ago, I was hit on the same stretch of frontage road areas (while riding my bike to and from work) twice in a few months. Both drivers sped off. Fun times, baby. 💪😎✌️ Humanity sure is classy!
I've been nearly hit on the sidewalk, too, on a number of occasions by drivers who don't feel the need to check that the sidewalks and crosswalks are clear as they are making a turn or pulling out of a driveway. Being on the sidewalk isn't a magic bullet.
I was on the shoulder and my neighbor who works for coca cola forced me to leave my bike so I didn't get hit. In his company vehicle with his kid in the car. Maniac.
As a walker on a sideWALK, I’ve had too many close calls with bikes. This is not the solution.

Every time. They investigate themselves and find they did nothing wrong and in this case screw the investigation even. They magically come up with or intimidate citizens to say whatever they need to get the media to blow them 💋 kisses
They have to do a better job enforcing traffic rules on bicyclists. I have at too many close calls with cyclists who straight up run a red light without even giving a thought to stop.
And now with electric bikes going 35+ mph, in the roads on the sidewalks, always following their rules.

Yes. They make blinking lights just for bikes at night, you can't miss them they're really annoying to see.

So heartbreaking. Many bicyclists and pedestrians do not understand the rules of the road. They assume they have the automatic right of way. Sometimes that’s a gamble that results in absolute tragedy.
If you ride your bike on the road, all the same traffic laws apply !
I get so aggravated at those who don't signal, don't stop, don't let pedestrians cross , use the pedestrian crosswalk, etc etc.
And those recumbant bikes should be outlawed !!
The Amish in our town are the only ones who pay any attention to the laws. They have my respect and my thanks.

If this happened to any of us we would be sitting in jail. Did they preform any field sobriety test on the officer. If you work in construction and have an accident the first thing they do is drug test you. Did they drug test this officer or do officers get special treatment. Why do we hold a garbage truck driver to a higher standard than our police. Ridiculous to be excusing the officers actions saying he did abesoultely nothing wrong, abesoultely ridiculous to suggest that.

I ride a e-bike. Most of my small town is 30 mph. My bike will do 30 mph even though Class 3 bike is limited to 28 mph(it should be at least 30).
When I ride in a 30 mph zone, most people want to do 35 or 40 and are riding my tire and gives me no other option to ride the 2 foot cement shoulder too let them pass.
Yes there is bicyclist that think they own the road going way under the limit and slowing down traffic.
It seem to me that most cars think I own the road even if I am doing speed limit.
I have a bright motorcycle light, tail light and blinking red lights, rear mirror and still worried I will get hit because of so much distracted /drunk driving.

Doesn’t sound like they can sue under the circumstances, I worked at Walmart and rode my bike but I had front, back lights plus I had LED lights on both wheels. Condolence to the family so sorry for your loss.
bikes are ment to be walked across the street get off and use the crosswalk like you are supposed to you are not supposed to ride on a crosswalk anywhere

So they first not blame the rookie cop . Yet said he was responding to a call and they said he was driving the speed . I seriously doubt that. All heresay . An no video from the patrol car or anox bodycam or street cams . Just straight up blame the victim . I want to see all the video especially from the bodycam and dash cam . We don't believe those by their word anymore after all those officers failed in uvalde . An after seeing many bad cops caught planting evidence and tampering with evidence. We want to see all of the proof . Not just words from the officers .

In Europe, there are concrete barriers separating cars and bicycles. In America, separating cars and bicycles by a painted stripe two feet from speeding cars is insane.
Even pre-war Europe had a strong cycling attitude which continues to this day. of course, the American oil, gas, rubber and automobile industries killed mass transit and also frown on bicycling as it does not enrich them. Read the story of National City Lines, the largest transportation system in the country that was bought out by Firestone and GM then shut down. Sadly, the U.S. is controlled by big business and greed whereas Europe still has some modicum of decency. RIP to the lady, tough break.
Roadways are made for autos. No way would I trust the roads for my safety.

I'm sure she's probably made that journey many times and hasn't thought twice about it but that's part of the point ☝️. We're sorry for her and the deputy as well as their families. Let nothing go by that you cannot learn from.

I live across from the Walmart in Osprey and unfortunately I see it all the time people darting across the road when they should not do it. My prayers go to the family and the Deputy.
Of course, the cops investigation of them selves leads to not guilty .. believe nothing they say at times like this.

Even under what we might call normal conditions, you still have to go out of your way to ensure safety rules the day. We're sorry for the loss of her life, prevention isn't just a word used in law enforcement it is something we can do in our lives every day. God bless her and may the Lord keep her.
I hope they get the cameras and not just let this accident be swept under the rug. Police are to follow the laws also know matter if they are going to a scene.
I come from a state that enforces bicycle lights at night… Perhaps enforcement down here would also save some lives.
Yeah, people really need to follow the traffic rules even if you are on a bike. I see people going against the traffic lights and stop signs often in my area. I was driving to work last night and some kids with no reflective vest or flashing lights front and back where playing on the road with their bikes. Sad what happened to this lady but you have to follow the rules. Rules, crossing lights, and stop signs are there for a reason.

Very sad, as a cyclist I use my bright LED headlight and tail lights even in the day time. I also always wear a helmet. I also obey traffic lights.

I would have it checked out. I had a sheriff run me off the road and into a curb once. He denied it but his boss made him buy me a new tire. Check the cameras.

How fast was the vehicle going? Were lights and sirens being used? Those are bigger factors than her not having the right of way.
