Another great vlog Alex. I know that you want to remain neutral but it would have been nice to hear which city you preferred! Having previously spent 6 months teaching in HCMC, I moved to Hanoi in August. Personally, I have to say that I prefer Hanoi in every single way, the people seem friendlier, the weather is more bearable, the food is amazing, the portions are bigger too. There's more of an authentic Vietnamese feel to the city. For anyone who prefers a more traditional South East Asian city, brimming with old-school charm, then Hanoi is for you. There are more green spaces, numerous lakes, museums, and quaint coffee shops. If you are into photography, you will be spoilt for choice! I previously spent 2 years travelling around S E Asia, but I'm afraid HCMC just didn't touch my soul. Hanoi, however, has stolen my heart......
@Clare D You're right. I was born and grew up in Saigon but I have to say Hanoi is more authentic in terms of Asian feel. Saigon has only 300 years of history compared to Hanoi over 1000 years. People are friendlier to foreigners, but a headache living there as Vietnamese dealing with daily red tapes. Do you know even million of Hanoians move to Saigon to live . Just for fun, when you talk to locals there, ask them why there are not many southerners move to Hanoi.
Andrew Nguyen why do you have to bring that subject here? The answer to your question is simple , because Ho chi minh city is the economic hub of vietnam , that's where everyone has opportunity to chase their dream job . Hanoi is now also developing and soon will get close to HCM in term of economy . You can see there are lots of HCM people in Hanoi now , not as much as Hanoian in Saigon but still, hanoi has a lot to offer . HCM and HN is not diferent as day and night
If you want to live in a Vietnam's city that is closer to a Western lifestyle? HCM. Want to experience the unique culture of Vietnam? Ha noi. Its simple as that
Also GDP per capita in 2015 (vietnamese: thu nhap binh quan dau nguoi nam 2015) HCM City 5500 USD / year & Hanoi 3600 USD / year. HCM authority plans to increase their GDP per capita up to 9800 USD / year in 2020 while Hanoi authority also sets the goal for their GDP capita to reach 6800 USD / year in 2020. So there you go, HCM is developing faster than Hanoi but it could also mean there would be more competition in HCM than in Hanoi. Competition is why Thailand is not paying as much as Vietnam for English teachers even though Thai has the better economy than Vietnam,
zhubox03 I just stated the fact. There are no HCM people, only Saigonese even if there are such people as you claimed that I'm pretty sure they're Northerners moving south in the previous years and they're now back.
I lived in and around Hanoi for a year and a half. I'm working in Portugal at the moment, but I want to move back to Vietnam. I'm just in love with the country!
Thanks for the comment! Yeah, really is a great place. :)
is it true as someone from North America that you do not make much money teaching in Portugal ? and possibly break even financially , pay cheque to pay cheque ?
What about pollution in HCMC/Saigon and the increase in cancer, fatigue or breathing problems among the population who live there? There are many other towns who offer a good salary and lots of teaching hours. Danang or Nha Trang are just some of the examples. Nha Trang has lots of small schools, agencies, hotels and private hospitals who hire teachers. It is on the beach, with three amazing hot spring and mud bath resorts, lifestyle is more relaxing, people are more friendly. I would strongly recommend it.
Thanks
Hey dude I've just got to saigon from Cape town👍this was very helpful because I want to move to hanoi soon.
Great country, intriguing history, friendly people, delicious food, and beautiful scenery! Teaching English in Vietnam comes with a high salary and extremely low cost of living. What' else do we want?
Very informative, I had no clue where to start in Vietnam however now I got some idea
Thank you Alex for the comprehensive comparison. I cannot wait for my trip to Vietnam next year.
Michael Beregman you’re welcome!
Was anybody else trying desperately to figure out what the girls in the background were talking about?
This is extremely helpful video as outsider to new country this was very usefull advise!!!
GREAT comparison video! Seriously... Such useful information. Thank you!
I was literally googling this question yesterday. o.O
Good timing 😊
Loving your videos. Seriously looking at coming next year. Looking into taking a year of work. Maybe not go back and stay there.
Great comparisons! Thanks!
I've been teaching almost 10 years here (Ho Chi Minh city). If you’re sensitive to pollution live in the suburb (25 min by bus or motorbike) of HCMC. Sometimes it’s 5 times less polluted than the city center (I use Air Matters app). Lots of trees and parks. Lots of language schools, private schools and International schools in District 7.
Most people that i know usually call it Saigon or simply “City”. “HCM City” is just for filling in forms (like applying a job, banks, police stations....).
So so so diplomatic ..... but yes I would agree
hello

Great video! thats exactly the question I was asking myself
Good vlog buddy. Quite interesting and informative about the country. I'm in the country for several weeks, so let's meet up for coffee
exactly the video I wanted!
I like both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. It's a tough choice.
If you want to live in a Vietnam's city that is closer to a Western lifestyle? HCM. Want to experience the unique culture of Vietnam? Ha noi. Its simple as that
Paramoore Jorack I know Ho Chi Minh is the legal name but can you call it Saigon because Ho Chi Minh killed a lot of my people
KodyTRG uh, triple-stick, so Diem and Thieu not?
Good insight and great overview. Two questions: architecturally is there an area in HCMC similar to the Old Quarter, Hanoi? Also, is there a demand for Business English to be taught in HCMC or Hanoi? Thanks and Cheers 🍺🍺🍺
If you prefer culture and more laidback environment you choose Hanoi. If you prefer a vibrant and more western oriented city it's Saigon. Also in Saigon people are more friendly and open.
Kien Phan I have to disagree. The people in Hanoi are much more friendlier. Saigon is to much like people from the USA
Alex, I always love your videos. After 42 years I learned to forgive (never forget though) and accepted. To be honest, the old regime was not all that good either, and yes, there was corruption, harassment (if you have power). I have been crying for many years after my father killed by communist in 1968 (Tet offensive). I live in US for 42 years after the fall of Saigon, now is HCM city. My choice is not to suffer any more because it is very painful, psychological pain. I need to think differently now. I need to take care myself, be happy whatever left of my life. I need to forgive, be happy so my siblings can also be happy, no more bitterness. There was war, and war never pretty. I can see people' life are so much better in VN. I can see everyone wants to learn English, making money, do business, traveling, ect. and that make me very happy. I see changes in both sides, north and south, the same, people wants to live happy, make money ect. If I cannot forgive then I will have to live so suffer the rest of my life? Thanks for upload, Alex. I do like your videos, actually, LOVE all your videos. I am sorry if I'm upsetting anyone (so sorry). But I think I need to share this. Thank you so much for upload:)
KTT. I would just like to thank you, for sharing your story, and giving me a much more deeper understanding of your experience in Vietnam! Yes, you are so, so correct, in Life we all as humans have to find that place, where we can, forgive, forget, for it is us who will suffer on a mental and emotional level continually in life, if we hold on to painful, negative things done to a race or us as individuals, this is where the strength of our soul comes in, and our wisdom shines, as we have to have peace within ourselves, so we can build, live life happily, love and give to others we love and most importantly ourselves. Thank you for sharing, be blessed All your life x
North or South, communist or not, the culture of the Vietnamese people is slum and corrupted. It doesn’t matter what political system or government system or how rich the Vietnamese can be, it’s the culture of the Vietnamese people that keeps them from advancing. For example: 50 years ago, the Vietnamese people squat to cook, sell and to eat. 50 years later, they still live the same way: they squat to do everything. That’s the reason you see unsanitary food. Not only that the Vietnamese people throw garbage everywhere, they cannot seem to obey the rule of law or be organized. The Vietnamese society is dirty and chaotic. Not only in Vietnam, the Vietnamese people who live abroad live the same slum way. So stop blaming the system. But change the slum attitude if the Vietnamese wants to improve their society.
Giap Vo you copied and paste your past reply don’t worry I would do the same I wouldn’t want to write it all over again
Giap Vo that isn’t true my parents stand and cook
Giap Vo stop commenting this
hello
I from việt nam
Gr8 info Alex, thanks. What kind of camera and microphone are you using here? Good quality. take care.
Thank you for sharing!
The courses at ninjateacher are only for degree hokders though, that sucks
What about Nha Trang ? What is the opportunity to teach English there?
summer not much and you won’t make nearly as much like in Hanoi
Good video, very informative
Hanoi is way better to teach in than HMC
Have you done a video on working as a private tutor? I'm making plans for a trip to VN before the end of this year (hopefully). I'd be interested in hearing your input on this aspect of teaching.
I haven’t but it would be a good topic. There are lots of opportunities for private tutoring.
Do I need a bachelors degree to legally teach in Vietnam? I am interested in your TESOL class in Saigon, but the need (if there is one) for a degree would put the brakes on that.
Yes you need a bachelor's degree I believe
Steven G no you don’t need a BA
Ho Chi Minh city.
How did you learn to ride a motorbike? I never ride one in my home country
I am. Planning to go Vietnam nxt month and came acrosa this video. Are u free to be a tourguide? 😊
My parents are from Hanoi, but I prefer more Saigon. It's more modern and development, I think that's because I'm more Western oriented. Lol
Hi Alex. I’m considering doing the teaching cert with you, and will contact you separately. However, I have a question that I think maybe others would like to hear the answer. Are there adult oriented schools that you’d recommend that teaches Vietnamese to westerners, as I teach English also?
Hi Andy! There are definitely Vietnamese language learning companies in Vietnam. We look forward to hearing from you. :)
Andy Chan which language of Vietnamese are you learning south or north because some North Vietnamese words are different from South Vietnamese words so both sides are kind of different I prefer South because I grew up with it but you can teach north or south if you want
have you ever hear to night and the Ha` Noi they say to light mean to night or clip they say (( co` lip )) with two different sound lol
Alex, I am making explorations into doing teaching in Vietnam after I finish my B.A(Hons) and have spoken with TEFL, but I wonder also about on top of your teaching jobs do you make money from these videos as well and anything else?
I know you posted this comment months ago, but he's obviously heavily involved in ninjateacher, and they offer TEFEL course at between $650-1750 USD, which I suspect is very profitable
Any body know what would be a reasonable price for buying a motor bike? And what the process of getting a motor bike license.
Which one of the two cities you advise for a non-native English speaker to teach English in?
your weblink for your HostGator site does not work. error 504 time out,
Thank you for the great review. Are there fitness centers in Hanoi?
Saidia Reffell yes a lot
Saidia Reffell
yes,
they are called parks!
and they are called vietnamese restaurants (coz the food is so healthy)
Saidia Reffell yes mam. You may do work out all day long :))
What are your thoughts on Hanoi vs Ho Chi Minh City? 🙂
Davman "Basically I have no idea what I am talking about." Lol. You're crazy. According to the latest report, there're more Americans and Westerners to live in the northern part of Vietnam than its southern part. Go figure!
Ho Chi Minh city is a stupid name from a traitor Nguyen Sinh Cung (Ho Chi Minh).
Source pls?
city name: Ho chi minh❌ - ( Saigon ✔)
Hanoi feels very Chinese. HCMC feels more like South East Asia. Pho is better in HCMC in my opinion.
How much do you reckon you need to start out in Ho Chi Minh? I read you need three month's rent upfront and a deposit for single accommodation. Is this true?
We have a free guide on exactly that: www.ninjateacher.com/free-guide
Do air-bnb then negotiate longer term rent
Hey Alex, I have a question. I'm a native English speaker and I have a degree in English. I want to teach English in Vietnam, but I'd like to try it before I invest in the Tefl to see if it's something I want to do long term. What do you think are the chances that I would find job(s)?
mateeah if you have an English degree, you’ll be able to find work without one. Try icanread
Umm...Can you visit Cu xa lu Gia street ,district 11
Which city would be better for corporate or adult teaching? I'm not a fan of teaching young children.
Probably HCMC because of the business focus
HCM no question. Business people with better income are concentrated in HCM more than Hanoi
Mireille Jane Saigon.
The city has been famous for " PARTY and PLAY " during the French and American occupied even now.
District 7 is for foreigners.
Hanoi is the best city in asian
What about Hongkong? They have Disneyland there :D
give me a break, hanoi is same old shit, saigon is so much better
Vinh Thuc Hoang saigon is lost city :)). How about Ho Chi Minh city??
Saigon, Saigon, Saigon.
Và tóm lại là anh ý yêu Hà Nội hơn THÀNH PHỐ HỒ CHÍ MINH thân yêu! Tôi cũng yêu thủ đô Hà Nội ngàn năm văn hiến của nước CHXHCN VIỆT NAM
I prefer Saigon over Ho Chi Minh city.
So what?
micheal lee deeply agreed, don't know why Alex was so lack of knowledge like that to call that traitor
Batorfamily Ferry Court Are you drunk or high on something?
Hoàng Dzũng Ho Chi Minh betrayed South Vietnam and Killed the people living there
ALEX make sure you teach them pronouncing correctly ,i mean Ha` Noi or north peoples lol
I'm teaching in Israel, I suppose Western Asia. I wouldn't recommend it, complete hell.
Ben j
why?
Ben j why?
When you call the city as Saigon, everyone feels normal, but when you call Saigon as Ho CHi Minh, many people feel insulted.
The past belongs to the past. Vietnam's younger generation prefers Ho City Minh City to Saigon.
Uyen Trang I prefer Ho Chi Minh City over Saigon. So what?
Saigon is more cute than HCMC , that's long and people in Saigon usually called Saigon
Give it up and accept it. The victors have won and declared their rights to name whatever they want. The losers didn’t have the courage to fight for freedom, but exile. So suck it up.
Uyen Trang I think they feel insulted because they are south and Ho Chi Minh killed lots of South Vietnamese and he was like hey China I just killed my people help
Mình là người HN nhưng rất thích những người trong Tp.HCM. Nhưng Tp.HCM có nhiều dân ở mọi miền nên khá nhiều tệ nạn hơn HN !!!
Tphcm cung co nhieu dan Ha Noi :P
Vinh Bảo hà nội càng có nhiều dân hà nội , sao ko tệ nạn như hcm?
HCM co nhieu dan Tay hon Ha Noi.
Sorry but it's called Saigon, not Ho Chi Minh Mummy.
All people I know call it HCM city. Young, middle-aged or older, doesn't matter.
Thuật Hùng Biện Nobody even cares about sore losers like you.
Sorry, but I don't believe you.
I care, and those who liked my comments care, plus millions of Vietnamese people living in Vietnam and abroad care.
Thuật Hùng Biện I have something to make you feel better. Now repeat after me: Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City
English teacher = Nothern? 😊
