    Another great vlog Alex. I know that you want to remain neutral but it would have been nice to hear which city you preferred! Having previously spent 6 months teaching in HCMC, I moved to Hanoi in August. Personally, I have to say that I prefer Hanoi in every single way, the people seem friendlier, the weather is more bearable, the food is amazing, the portions are bigger too. There's more of an authentic Vietnamese feel to the city. For anyone who prefers a more traditional South East Asian city, brimming with old-school charm, then Hanoi is for you. There are more green spaces, numerous lakes, museums, and quaint coffee shops. If you are into photography, you will be spoilt for choice! I previously spent 2 years travelling around S E Asia, but I'm afraid HCMC just didn't touch my soul. Hanoi, however, has stolen my heart......

      @Clare D You're right. I was born and grew up in Saigon but I have to say Hanoi is more authentic in terms of Asian feel. Saigon has only 300 years of history compared to Hanoi over 1000 years. People are friendlier to foreigners, but a headache living there as Vietnamese dealing with daily red tapes. Do you know even million of Hanoians move to Saigon to live . Just for fun, when you talk to locals there, ask them why there are not many southerners move to Hanoi.

      Andrew Nguyen why do you have to bring that subject here? The answer to your question is simple , because Ho chi minh city is the economic hub of vietnam , that's where everyone has opportunity to chase their dream job . Hanoi is now also developing and soon will get close to HCM in term of economy . You can see there are lots of HCM people in Hanoi now , not as much as Hanoian in Saigon but still, hanoi has a lot to offer . HCM and HN is not diferent as day and night

      If you want to live in a Vietnam's city that is closer to a Western lifestyle? HCM. Want to experience the unique culture of Vietnam? Ha noi. Its simple as that

      Also GDP per capita in 2015 (vietnamese: thu nhap binh quan dau nguoi nam 2015) HCM City 5500 USD / year & Hanoi 3600 USD / year. HCM authority plans to increase their GDP per capita up to 9800 USD / year in 2020 while Hanoi authority also sets the goal for their GDP capita to reach 6800 USD / year in 2020. So there you go, HCM is developing faster than Hanoi but it could also mean there would be more competition in HCM than in Hanoi. Competition is why Thailand is not paying as much as Vietnam for English teachers even though Thai has the better economy than Vietnam,

    • @andrew4558
      @andrew4558 6 років тому

      zhubox03 I just stated the fact. There are no HCM people, only Saigonese even if there are such people as you claimed that I'm pretty sure they're Northerners moving south in the previous years and they're now back.

    What about pollution in HCMC/Saigon and the increase in cancer, fatigue or breathing problems among the population who live there? There are many other towns who offer a good salary and lots of teaching hours. Danang or Nha Trang are just some of the examples. Nha Trang has lots of small schools, agencies, hotels and private hospitals who hire teachers. It is on the beach, with three amazing hot spring and mud bath resorts, lifestyle is more relaxing, people are more friendly. I would strongly recommend it.

    I've been teaching almost 10 years here (Ho Chi Minh city). If you’re sensitive to pollution live in the suburb (25 min by bus or motorbike) of HCMC. Sometimes it’s 5 times less polluted than the city center (I use Air Matters app). Lots of trees and parks. Lots of language schools, private schools and International schools in District 7.

    Alex, I always love your videos. After 42 years I learned to forgive (never forget though) and accepted. To be honest, the old regime was not all that good either, and yes, there was corruption, harassment (if you have power). I have been crying for many years after my father killed by communist in 1968 (Tet offensive). I live in US for 42 years after the fall of Saigon, now is HCM city. My choice is not to suffer any more because it is very painful, psychological pain. I need to think differently now. I need to take care myself, be happy whatever left of my life. I need to forgive, be happy so my siblings can also be happy, no more bitterness. There was war, and war never pretty. I can see people' life are so much better in VN. I can see everyone wants to learn English, making money, do business, traveling, ect. and that make me very happy. I see changes in both sides, north and south, the same, people wants to live happy, make money ect. If I cannot forgive then I will have to live so suffer the rest of my life? Thanks for upload, Alex. I do like your videos, actually, LOVE all your videos. I am sorry if I'm upsetting anyone (so sorry). But I think I need to share this. Thank you so much for upload:)

      KTT. I would just like to thank you, for sharing your story, and giving me a much more deeper understanding of your experience in Vietnam! Yes, you are so, so correct, in Life we all as humans have to find that place, where we can, forgive, forget, for it is us who will suffer on a mental and emotional level continually in life, if we hold on to painful, negative things done to a race or us as individuals, this is where the strength of our soul comes in, and our wisdom shines, as we have to have peace within ourselves, so we can build, live life happily, love and give to others we love and most importantly ourselves. Thank you for sharing, be blessed All your life x

      North or South, communist or not, the culture of the Vietnamese people is slum and corrupted. It doesn’t matter what political system or government system or how rich the Vietnamese can be, it’s the culture of the Vietnamese people that keeps them from advancing. For example: 50 years ago, the Vietnamese people squat to cook, sell and to eat. 50 years later, they still live the same way: they squat to do everything. That’s the reason you see unsanitary food. Not only that the Vietnamese people throw garbage everywhere, they cannot seem to obey the rule of law or be organized. The Vietnamese society is dirty and chaotic. Not only in Vietnam, the Vietnamese people who live abroad live the same slum way. So stop blaming the system. But change the slum attitude if the Vietnamese wants to improve their society.
